Start by checking which apps and content use the most space: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or Settings > General > iPad Storage. Use the recommendations and app list to choose what to review, then decide whether to offload apps, remove downloads, optimize photos with iCloud, or delete files you no longer need. Apple’s published guidance explains these options but does not provide measured before-and-after results, so there is no verified amount of space to promise.
Check what is using storage first
On your device, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or Settings > General > iPad Storage. The screen shows used and available storage, a breakdown by category, recommendations, and an app list with each app’s storage use. Menu wording and available recommendations can vary by iOS or iPadOS version. Apple’s current instructions are at How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad.

Use the largest categories as a guide rather than assuming every byte is removable. Storage may include apps, photos, messages and attachments, downloaded videos, and files. Cached or temporary data may not appear in totals in the way you expect; Apple notes that the system can manage some temporary or re-downloadable items automatically.

- Delete App removes the app and its related data. Do this only if you are comfortable losing that locally stored information or have confirmed it is backed up elsewhere.
Apple describes offloading as freeing storage used by the app while keeping its documents and data. Offloading therefore may free less space than deleting, because the data remains. Some devices also offer automatic offloading of unused apps; check the storage recommendations and your current settings rather than assuming that feature is enabled.
Remove downloads and local files you no longer need
After apps, look for content stored for offline use. Apple’s iPhone storage guide identifies downloaded videos, files, messages and attachments, and app content among the items worth reviewing. Exact controls depend on the app that saved the content.

If photos and videos take up much of the device, iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage can reduce local storage pressure while keeping the library synced. With the feature enabled, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and space-saving versions may be kept on the device as needed. You need enough available iCloud storage for the library.

On supported current iOS releases, Apple documents the setting under Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos, where you can turn on syncing and choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Menu names and paths can change by release; check Apple’s Manage your photo and video storage instructions for the version you use. This option does not require you to select individual photos for deletion, but it depends on iCloud capacity and network access to retrieve originals when needed.

When iCloud Photos is active, deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos. So deletion is not a way to remove a local copy while keeping the item in the synced library.

Apple says deleted photos and videos ordinarily remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, subject to the conditions described in its Delete photos on your iPhone or iPad guidance. After that recovery period, or if you permanently delete the item sooner, it may no longer be recoverable through Recently Deleted. Check the library and account before deleting anything you want to keep.
Keep a separate copy by importing photos to a computer
If you want to remove media from the device but keep an independent copy, Apple documents importing photos and videos to a computer. Confirm that the import completed and that the files open from the computer before deleting anything from the phone or tablet. This approach means you manage the imported copy separately; it is different from keeping a synced iCloud Photos library.
Follow Apple’s instructions for moving to a lower-capacity device, which also explain checking storage and importing media: Move from your current iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a lower-capacity device. The cited guidance supports importing to a computer; it does not establish compatibility for a particular external drive or direct connection to a specific device.
What results can you expect?
Apple’s published support pages describe storage features and steps, not a controlled storage-cleanup test. They do not establish a typical number of gigabytes freed by offloading an app, removing downloads, optimizing photos, or deleting files. The actual change depends on what is stored on your device and which action you take. Check the storage screen before and after a specific change if you want to see its effect on your own device.
