To view an earlier version of a Word document without changing the current one, open Version History, select the version you want to inspect, and leave Restore untouched. This Microsoft 365 workflow applies to documents stored in OneDrive or SharePoint; a local-only file does not automatically have this cloud version history.
View an earlier version in Word
-
Open the document in Word.
-
Select the document title in the title bar, then choose Version History or See all versions. In applicable desktop versions, you can also go to File > Info > Version History. The labels and route can vary by platform, app version, and account. Microsoft Support documents these Word routes.

In the Version History pane, select the older version to view it. Microsoft’s instruction is: “In the Version History pane on the right, select a version to view it.” Do not select Restore if you only want to inspect the older copy.

Review the version, then close it or return to the current document. If Word displays a restore control or banner, do not use it unless you intend to make that version current.
Use the file menu in SharePoint or OneDrive
SharePoint
In the SharePoint library, find the file, open its menu (including the more-options menu if needed), and choose Version history. Where available, select View beside the version you want to inspect—not Restore. Microsoft’s SharePoint instructions describe viewing a version and closing it after inspection.

OneDrive
You can open version history from OneDrive, or from File Explorer if the OneDrive sync app is installed. Microsoft’s OneDrive instructions focus on restoring a selected version, so for inspection, use Word’s Version History pane or SharePoint’s View option when available. Avoid Restore. Microsoft’s OneDrive guidance explains the effect of restoring.
What happens if you choose Restore?
Restore changes which version is current. In OneDrive, the selected older version becomes current. In SharePoint, restoring creates a copy and makes it the latest version; the earlier historical version remains in the history. For a read-only check, select or open the version for viewing and leave Restore alone.

Why Version History may be missing
-
The document is stored locally. Microsoft 365’s documented Word version-history workflow applies to files saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, not arbitrary local-only files. Microsoft explains the supported cloud-file context.
-
Versioning is disabled or restricted. A SharePoint library owner or administrator can change versioning settings, and an organization administrator can turn off document versioning for work or school OneDrive accounts. Ask the library owner or administrator if the command is unavailable.

Your permissions limit what you can see. SharePoint permissions can affect which versions appear for a user.
-
Older versions have expired from the available history. SharePoint libraries can be configured to retain a maximum number of versions and delete older ones as new versions are created. History is not guaranteed to extend indefinitely.

The command is in a different place. Try the document title’s Version History or See all versions option, File > Info > Version History, or the file menu in its OneDrive or SharePoint library.
How many versions can you view?
It depends on the account and storage configuration. Microsoft Support’s Word for the web guidance says a personal Microsoft account can retrieve the last 25 versions; for a work or school account, the number depends on library configuration. That figure is specific to the personal-account guidance, not a universal limit across Word, accounts, or SharePoint libraries. See Microsoft’s Word for the web guidance.
