Battery drain, overheating, or unexplained data use can be reasons to investigate, but none proves an iPhone has spyware. Start by considering your safety, then check Apple sharing and account access, review device-management profiles, and update iOS. If Apple sends a threat notification or you face a credible risk of a sophisticated targeted attack, treat that differently from ordinary phone trouble and seek specialist help.
Could the signs mean someone is monitoring your iPhone?
They could, but common performance problems have many possible causes. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lists faster-than-usual battery drain, unexpected data use, overheating, and unexplained restarts among signs worth considering. Stalkerware is also designed to evade detection, so not seeing those symptoms does not establish that a phone is safe.

Could checking or changing settings put you at risk?
If a partner, ex-partner, or another person with physical access may be monitoring you, pause before calling for help, searching for advice, or changing settings on the iPhone. A visible change can alert someone and may affect your safety. The FTC advises using a trusted device the other person cannot access to contact a domestic-violence advocate or law enforcement, as appropriate. Consider leaving the phone behind when seeking help.
If it is safe, document relevant evidence before removing anything or resetting the phone. If you are unsure whether an action could alert someone or destroy useful evidence, get advice using a safer device before proceeding.

How to review sharing and access with Apple Safety Check
On a supported iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Apple says Safety Check requires iOS 16 or later, a signed-in Apple Account, and two-factor authentication.

- Choose Manage Sharing & Access to review items individually, including information shared with people and apps, connected Apple Account devices, app privacy permissions, verification phone numbers, and some account or device security settings.
Safety Check is not a complete audit of your digital life. Apple says it cannot review or change some non-Apple accounts and passwords, social-media sharing, or information shared from other devices. Consider whether a person might notice any change before you make it.

How to check whether someone has access to your Apple Account
Possible signs of account access by someone else include an unexpected sign-in or password-change alert, two-factor authentication codes you did not request, an unfamiliar trusted device, messages or purchases you did not make, or a password that no longer works. Review your account using a device and connection you consider safe.
- Change a suspected-compromised Apple Account password to a strong, unique password.
- Check account details and remove devices you do not recognize.
- Confirm that you control the email addresses and phone numbers linked to the account.
- Use two-factor authentication. Apple recommends Security Keys as additional protection against targeted phishing; they protect account sign-in and do not scan for spyware.
What to make of a profile in VPN & Device Management
Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to review installed profiles. A profile or mobile-device-management enrollment is not automatically malicious: employers and schools commonly use them to manage devices, and profiles can control settings or permit access to data or location.

If the phone belongs to a workplace or school, ask its administrator before removing a profile. If a profile is genuinely unknown and you decide it is safe to remove, Apple’s guidance describes deleting it and restarting the iPhone. Removing a profile also deletes associated settings, apps, and data, so do not treat deletion as a harmless diagnostic test.

Apple describes its threat notifications as “high-confidence alerts that a user has been individually targeted by a mercenary spyware attack.” Apple also says its investigations cannot establish absolute certainty. It says alerts may arrive as an iPhone notification, an email to addresses associated with the Apple Account, or a banner after signing in to the Apple Account website.
If you receive one, preserve the alert and follow Apple’s instructions. Do not dismiss it as an ordinary battery or performance issue. If your work or circumstances make targeted surveillance plausible—for example, journalism, activism, or human-rights work—seek qualified assistance rather than relying on a routine scan.

When specialist forensic help is appropriate
Amnesty International Security Lab’s Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) is a specialist forensic toolkit, not a simple end-user scan. Amnesty says it requires technical expertise, including forensic and command-line knowledge, and is intended for technologists and investigators. Public indicators and tools can miss newer threats, so a result from a do-it-yourself check cannot guarantee that a phone is clean.
For a credible targeted-attack concern, look for reputable mobile-device forensic analysis. Amnesty’s public help page has reported that it is temporarily unable to accept public support requests, so do not assume it can provide immediate direct assistance.
How to reduce risk and choose a proportionate response
Install current iOS software
Apple says keeping software updated is the most important step for maintaining the security of Apple products. Install available iOS updates so the phone has the protections included in current software.
Consider Lockdown Mode for a credible targeted risk
Lockdown Mode is an optional, high-restriction setting intended for people who may be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks; it limits some functionality. On supported software, find it at Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode. Apple advises updating first to get the complete set of protections. The setting is not a general-purpose spyware detector.
Consider a reset only after weighing safety and evidence
If stalkerware is plausible, the FTC says a factory reset may remove it, but recommends documenting evidence first when it is safe to do so. Do not restore apps from the old backup afterward, because doing so could reinstall stalkerware. In some situations, a new phone and account inaccessible to the suspected abuser may be safer. Consider personal safety and evidence needs before taking either step.
