None of these alone proves when a site first launched or who controls its editorial decisions.
What “website age” and “ownership” can actually tell you
A website is not a single dated object. Its domain, overall publication, individual pages, and underlying claims may each have different histories. Keep those questions separate:

- Domain registration date: when the domain’s current registration record began, if that date is publicly available.
- Archived content: evidence that a particular version of a page was captured by a certain date.
- Publisher or operator: the person or organization identified as responsible for the site or page.
- Original source: the author, institution, or record from which a specific claim, quotation, image, or document originated.
A domain may be registered before a site publishes anything, and one page can be newer than the site or domain. Likewise, the name on a registration record is not necessarily the publisher or the person making editorial decisions.

Start with ICANN Lookup, the official tool for publicly available domain registration information. ICANN says the lookup returns information related to a domain or other internet number resource. Since 28 January 2025, RDAP has been the definitive source for generic top-level domain registration information; the lookup may fall back to registry WHOIS when RDAP data is unavailable.
#1 Best Overall
- Enter the domain, such as example.com. Record the exact domain you checked.
- Note the registration or creation date if the result provides one, along with the registrar, status, and any public organization or contact fields.
- Record whether fields are absent or redacted. ICANN does not require all registration data to be returned publicly.
- Keep the date you checked the record, because this is a current lookup and registration details can change.
Use the registration date to describe the domain record, not the launch of the website or the creation of any particular page. A public registrant field is evidence about the registration record; a missing field does not identify who operates the site.
Use the Wayback Machine to check historical pages
Search the Internet Archive Wayback Machine for both the domain and the exact page URL. The earliest relevant capture you find shows that the archived version existed by that capture date. It does not establish the site’s exact launch date: archiving may be incomplete, and snapshots can miss pages, embedded files, or dynamic content.
- Enter the full URL, including any subdomain and page path.
- Open the timeline or calendar and locate the earliest capture relevant to your question.
- Open the capture and check whether it contains the same page, claim, or media you are investigating.
- Record the snapshot date and describe it as “captured by [date],” not “created on [date].”
A domain-wide result does not automatically describe every subdomain or page. A page may have appeared later, changed substantially, or not been captured even if other parts of the site were archived. NARA’s guidance on managing web records explains why reconstructing a site depends on capturing relevant files and structure; its retired Products and Services site, for example, has Wayback snapshots from 2011 to 2022.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIdentify the publisher, then trace the original source
Check the site’s About and Contact pages, editorial policy, author biography, and the page’s own citations. These tell you what the publisher claims about responsibility and sourcing; they are not independent proof that every statement is accurate. Compare a named organization with any public registration details only as corroboration, not proof of editorial control.
Rank #3
For a specific claim, quotation, image, or document, follow the page’s citations and credits to the originating source. Check the cited item itself and compare its title, author or issuing institution, date, and context. A newer repost or aggregator may reproduce older material without being its originator. NARA notes that some images appearing on its site were obtained from other organizations, illustrating why the host page and original source can differ.
Keep a citation trail containing the page author, page title, larger work or site title, creation date when available, URL, and date accessed. NARA defines authenticity as whether a website is proven to be what it claims to be and to have been created by the agency with which it is identified; that is a useful standard for evaluating a claimed publisher, but it does not establish the provenance of every item on the site.
How to combine the evidence without overstating it
| Evidence | Useful for | Does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| ICANN Lookup and RDAP | Current registration details, registrar, dates, and any public contact fields | First publication date, page authorship, or day-to-day editorial control |
| Wayback capture | A dated view of content the archive captured | Exact launch date, complete historical coverage, or unchanged content between captures |
| About, editorial, and citation pages | The publisher, authors, and sources the site declares | Independent confirmation that those statements are accurate |
| Original cited record or publisher page | Provenance of a particular claim, quotation, image, or document | Authenticity of every other page hosted on the same site |
Write a bounded conclusion that separates what the evidence establishes from what it suggests. For example: “ICANN currently shows the domain registration record beginning in [year]. The Wayback Machine has a relevant capture from [date]. These sources do not establish the site’s exact launch date or the identity of its editors.” Replace the bracketed parts with the results you actually verified.

Capture and preserve a page for your notes
If you need a visual record of a page while checking its claims, a screenshot can preserve what was rendered at the time you captured it. It does not replace an archive snapshot or prove who created the content. For a manual record, save the page URL and access date alongside the screenshot; keep the original cited documents and citation details separately.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a quick capture, replace the example target URL and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the available parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a registration date the launch date: state only when the domain record began, as shown in the lookup.
- Treating the first capture as the birth certificate: report the earliest relevant capture you found as evidence the content existed by then.
- Assuming a registrant is the publisher: registration and editorial responsibility are different questions, and public fields may be limited.
- Assuming the host originated its media: check image credits and cited records at the originating publisher or institution.
- Generalizing from one URL to an entire site: check the exact subdomain and page path relevant to your claim.
