Use ffprobe to inspect a video file before you stream it: check the video stream’s codec, frame rate, and bitrate, then compare those values with YouTube’s guidance for your workflow. An uploaded prerecorded video and a live encoder feed use different recommendations, so first decide which one you are preparing.
First decide: upload or live stream
YouTube’s upload recommendations describe encoding for prerecorded files. Its live-stream guidance describes what an encoder should send to YouTube. The tables are not interchangeable: a file’s bitrate does not, by itself, tell you what bitrate to set for a live encoder.

- Uploading a prerecorded video: inspect the finished file and compare its properties with YouTube’s upload recommendations.
- Sending a live encoder feed: inspect the encoder’s output or settings, then choose the live recommendation for its codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test the stream and monitor its health.
Inspect the video with ffprobe
FFmpeg’s ffprobe documentation describes the tool as a way to show information about multimedia streams and containers, with human-readable and machine-readable output. Run this command in a terminal, replacing input.mp4 with the file’s name or path:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsffprobe -hide_banner -show_format -show_streams input.mp4
In the output, find the stream whose type is video. Inspect its codec, frame-rate fields, dimensions, and bitrate if reported. Audio streams have their own codec and bitrate; do not mistake those for the video values. The format section describes the container as a whole, and its bitrate is not necessarily the video stream’s bitrate.

Fields may be missing or expressed differently depending on the file and its metadata. If ffprobe does not report a video bitrate, do not substitute the container bitrate and label it as video bitrate. State only what the tool reports. None of these fields is a universal score of picture quality.
Read the frame rate without rounding it away
Preserve the reported rate, including fractional rates such as 29.97 or 59.94; do not silently round them to 30 or 60. YouTube’s upload guidance says to use the frame rate at which the material was recorded. Its troubleshooting guidance also identifies 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 as common less-usual rates.

Compare a prerecorded upload with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings recommend H.264 video, progressive scan, and encoding at the recording frame rate. The following are SDR upload bitrate recommendations from YouTube Help, accessed 2026-10-03; the page does not state a publication year.
| Resolution | 24/25/30 fps | 48/50/60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 720p SDR | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p SDR | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) SDR | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
HDR upload guidance differs: YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 15 Mbps at high frame rates; for 2160p (4K), it lists 44–56 Mbps and 66–85 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube’s upload recommendations, not minimum validity thresholds or guarantees of visual quality. Match the applicable row to the file’s resolution, frame rate, and SDR or HDR format rather than applying one number to every video.

Choose settings for a live encoder feed
YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the row matching the stream you intend to send rather than extrapolating from one example.
| Live codec | 1080p30 recommendation | 1080p60 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03; the page does not state a publication year. They are encoder targets, not a way to infer the exact encoding history of a prerecorded source file. YouTube Help says, “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.” That does not remove the need to select suitable settings and verify the stream.

Check bandwidth and test representative content
Before an event, test your upload speed and leave about 20% bandwidth headroom, as recommended in YouTube’s streaming tips. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, then watch stream health while live. A static test image or silent feed may not reveal problems that appear with the real content.

Troubleshoot mismatched or missing values
- The bitrate seems unexpectedly high: confirm you are reading the video stream’s bitrate, not audio bitrate or the container’s overall bitrate.
- No video bitrate is shown: the field may be absent or unavailable in the file’s metadata. Do not treat a different bitrate field as a substitute; use the encoder’s actual settings when assessing a live feed.
- The frame rate looks close to a whole number: retain the exact fractional value reported by the inspector and compare it with the recorded rate instead of rounding it.
- You are comparing a file’s bitrate with a live target: first identify whether you are uploading the file or sending an encoder feed. Consult the corresponding YouTube guidance; those workflows have different tables.
- A live stream is unstable: test upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and check stream health during a representative test.
Or let it run in the cloud
