OBS can play both MP4 and MOV files as a Media Source on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Neither extension is inherently better for an OBS YouTube live stream: what matters is whether the codecs inside your particular file work in OBS and whether its picture and audio play correctly. The local file’s container is separate from the settings used to encode the live stream you send to YouTube.
MP4 vs. MOV: which should you choose?
For an existing clip, use whichever format your editing or export software provides, then test that exact file in OBS. OBS describes MP4 as a de facto standard for internet video and MOV as its sister format; compatibility can differ by codec, and MOV has a historical preference on Mac platforms. Those are useful context, not a rule that one extension will always work better. OBS’s formats guide explains that container and codec compatibility are distinct.

| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Will the file play in OBS? | OBS lists both MP4 and MOV as supported Media Source video file types. The extension alone does not guarantee that every video codec or audio track will behave correctly. Test the actual file. OBS Media Sources. |
| Which format should I export? | Choose one supported by the software and playback path you plan to use. If a file fails, check its video and audio encoding rather than assuming the extension is the cause. |
| Which format does YouTube receive? | That depends on OBS’s outgoing encoder settings—not whether the local clip is MP4 or MOV. Configure the live encoder separately. |
Add a pre-recorded clip to an OBS scene
Use Media Source for one local video
- In OBS, select the scene where the clip should appear. In the Sources dock, click the + button and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one. In the source properties, enable Local File and browse to the MP4 or MOV file.
- Enable Loop only if the clip should repeat. If it should start over whenever you return to the scene, enable Restart playback when source becomes active.
- Preview the scene. Confirm the image appears, the audio is audible, and playback starts and ends as intended. OBS’s Media Source also includes hardware-decoding and hide-after-playback controls where applicable; use them only if they suit the playback behavior you want. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
Use VLC Video for a playlist
If you need playlist behavior or the built-in Media Source does not play the file correctly, OBS offers a VLC Video source. VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, use the matching 64-bit VLC version. Add VLC Video from the Sources dock, then configure the playlist and preview it before your broadcast. OBS’s Media Sources guide covers the available source options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet the YouTube live encoder separately
A playable MP4 or MOV does not automatically meet YouTube’s live encoder requirements. Check the outgoing OBS settings against YouTube’s live encoder guidance, which lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select settings appropriate to your encoder and stream rather than changing the clip’s container to try to fix an outgoing-stream setting.

Test the complete broadcast path
- Play the clip in the intended OBS scene and check both video and audio.
- Test scene timing, including whether the clip should loop or restart when the source becomes active.
- Run a test stream with movement and audio representative of the event. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and check that the broadcast output remains correct. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. YouTube Help.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS shows a black screen or the clip will not play: Confirm the local file path is valid, then test the same file in OBS. Check the video codec and audio encoding inside the file; MP4 or MOV in the filename does not establish that every codec or track is compatible.
- The video plays but there is no sound: Check that the file contains an audio track and that the Media Source is not muted in OBS’s audio mixer. Preview the scene and confirm the audio reaches the intended output.
- The clip should play once but repeats: Turn off Loop in Media Source properties.
- The clip resumes partway through after switching scenes: Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if it should start from the beginning each time the scene becomes active.
- A playlist is required: Use VLC Video rather than a single Media Source, and verify VLC is installed with the matching architecture for OBS.
- The local clip looks fine, but YouTube reports stream problems: Review the outgoing encoder’s video and audio codecs, CBR bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live guidance. The source file’s container is a separate issue.
Do not confuse playback with OBS recording format
OBS’s caution about MP4 and MOV finalization applies to recording directly to those containers: an interruption while writing can leave a conventional recording unfinalized and potentially unrecoverable. It does not mean OBS cannot play existing MP4 or MOV files. For local recording, OBS defaults to MKV and recommends it for many cases; you can remux a recording when a more compatible output container is needed. OBS also documents fragmented and hybrid MP4/MOV options designed to improve recording resilience while retaining compatibility. Read OBS’s formats guide.
