Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo tell whether a prebuilt PC uses proprietary parts, identify its exact model and revision, then check the motherboard mounting, power connectors and pinout, PSU dimensions and cables, front-panel wiring, and cooler hardware against the manufacturer’s service manual or parts list. Judge each component separately: a system may use standard RAM and storage but a customized motherboard or power supply. A connector that fits physically is not proof that its wiring is compatible.
Start with the exact PC model
Brand names and broad product-family names are not enough. A manufacturer may use different boards, power supplies, or case layouts across models and revisions in the same family.

- Record the manufacturer, complete model name, machine type or product number, and revision if available. If you are considering a used listing, ask for clear interior photos and the identifying information needed to find the right documentation.
- Find the service or maintenance manual and illustrated parts catalog for that specific system. Check the system-board diagram, connector labels, supported processors and memory, drive slots, removal instructions, and replacement part numbers.
- Compare the documented configuration with the actual PC. A family name may cover several configurations, so do not assume a manual or parts list applies until the model identifiers match.
Manufacturer parts tools can help establish what came in a particular system and which replacements the manufacturer supports. Lenovo’s Parts Lookup distinguishes a unit’s as-built parts from parts compatible with a model or machine type. HP directs users to PartSurfer for current supported-part information. These resources inform repair planning; they do not, by themselves, prove that a part will fit or work in another brand’s PC.

Motherboard shape and mounting
Compare the board’s outline, screw locations, and standoffs with the case. An irregular board shape, nonstandard mounting positions, or front I/O integrated into the motherboard may constrain a replacement. The number of expansion slots affects upgrade capacity, but does not by itself show that the board is proprietary.

Main and CPU power connectors
Inspect the motherboard’s main power connection and separate CPU power connector, and verify the pinout using reliable documentation for the exact board and power supply. A small or unusual-looking plug is a reason to investigate, not proof of incompatibility. A standard modern desktop setup is commonly described as a 24-pin motherboard connection plus separate 4- or 8-pin CPU power, but appearance alone cannot confirm wiring. Never connect a replacement based only on whether the plug fits.
Power supply fit and cabling
Record the PSU model and measure its width, height, and depth. Check its mounting pattern, cable lengths, and the graphics-card power connectors available. A PSU can have adequate wattage and still be unsuitable because it will not fit, lacks the right leads, or uses an incompatible harness. Modular PSU cables are model-specific unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise; do not reuse cables simply because they plug in.

Inspect front-panel wiring and cooling hardware
Case buttons, lights, and ports
Check whether the power switch, LEDs, USB, and audio connect through separate motherboard headers or a combined block. A combined plug may not match the headers on a replacement board. Verify the pin layout rather than relying on wire colors or connector shape.

CPU cooler and fan connections
Before planning a cooler or motherboard swap, confirm socket support, backplate and mounting-hole compatibility, cooler height clearance, and the fan connector. A custom backplate or case clearance limit can make an otherwise suitable cooler impractical.

Assess upgrades one part at a time
“Proprietary” is not an all-or-nothing description of a PC. RAM and storage may be replaceable even when the motherboard, PSU, case, or cooler is customized. Check the available memory slots, M.2 and SATA connections, PCIe slots, and officially supported replacement parts individually.
A proprietary component may still be replaceable with the same compatible OEM part. The key question is whether your intended replacement or upgrade works with the rest of the system, and what extra parts or changes it requires.

Compare prebuilt PCs by the upgrade you actually want
For two candidate systems, compare the exact models on the points below. Model-specific documents and interior photos are stronger evidence than brand-level claims.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Motherboard | Board outline, mounting locations, and whether a replacement fits the case |
| Power supply | Standard or custom dimensions and mount, verified pinout, cable compatibility, and GPU power leads |
| Case wiring and fans | Separate headers or combined plugs, pin layout, and fan connections |
| Cooling and clearance | Socket and mounting support, cooler height, and available space |
| Expansion | Open RAM, M.2, SATA, and PCIe capacity for the specific configuration |
| Replacement support | Official parts availability and the manufacturer’s service information for the exact system |
| Total upgrade cost | Replacement parts, adapters or brackets, and any required case or PSU change |
Price the whole upgrade path before deciding. A low purchase price can be offset if a planned graphics-card or motherboard upgrade also requires a new PSU, case, or mounting hardware. Custom parts can support a compact, integrated design; the practical trade-off is future compatibility, replacement availability, and the cost of larger changes.
