How to Check a PowerShell Module Version

Check a PowerShell module’s loaded version, every locally available copy, or versions listed in a registered online repository.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To see every locally available version of a PowerShell module, run Get-Module -ListAvailable -Name ModuleName | Select-Object Name, Version, Path, replacing ModuleName with the module’s name. To see only the version already imported into your current session, omit -ListAvailable.

Check versions available on your computer

Run this in PowerShell, replacing ModuleName with the module you want to inspect:

Get-Module -ListAvailable -Name ModuleName |
    Select-Object Name, Version, Path

-ListAvailable searches the locations in $env:PSModulePath. The output includes modules available to import even if they are not loaded in the current session. Version shows the version PowerShell found; Path shows where that copy is located. Microsoft’s Get-Module reference

Check the version loaded in the current session

If you need the version of a module already imported into the session, run:

Get-Module -Name ModuleName |
    Select-Object Name, Version, Path

Without -ListAvailable, Get-Module lists modules imported into the current session. Listing a module does not import it.

Choose the command that matches your question

What you want to check Command What it reports
Version currently imported Get-Module -Name ModuleName | Select-Object Name, Version, Path Modules loaded in this session
Versions available locally Get-Module -ListAvailable -Name ModuleName | Select-Object Name, Version, Path Copies discoverable through $env:PSModulePath
Versions recorded as installed through PowerShellGet Get-InstalledModule -Name ModuleName Modules installed using PowerShellGet
Versions in a registered online repository Find-Module -Name ModuleName -AllVersions Repository results, not local installation state

Get-InstalledModule is not a complete inventory of modules on the computer: it returns modules installed using PowerShellGet. Microsoft recommends Get-Module -ListAvailable to see all modules installed on the system. Microsoft’s Get-InstalledModule reference

Identify duplicate copies or versions

The available-module command can return multiple results for the same module. Compare the Version and Path columns to distinguish versions and their locations. Microsoft’s examples show multiple PowerShellGet versions returned by Get-Module -ListAvailable. Get-Module examples

To list all versions recorded by PowerShellGet, use:

Get-InstalledModule -Name ModuleName -AllVersions

The -AllVersions parameter cannot be combined with -MinimumVersion, -MaximumVersion, or -RequiredVersion. Get-InstalledModule parameters

Check an online repository or import a specific version

Search a registered repository

Get-Module reports loaded or locally available modules; it does not query an online gallery. To search a registered repository for versions, run:

Find-Module -Name ModuleName -AllVersions

By default, Find-Module returns the newest matching version. -AllVersions requests the repository’s matching versions, while -RequiredVersion selects an exact version. Results depend on the registered repository. Standard version numbers use numeric components such as x.y.z; prerelease labels follow a hyphen. Microsoft’s Find-Module reference

Import an exact local version

If multiple local versions are available and you want to use a particular one in the current session, specify it when importing:

Import-Module -Name ModuleName -RequiredVersion 1.2.3
Get-Module -Name ModuleName | Select-Object Name, Version, Path

Replace 1.2.3 with the version you intend to import. If any version at or above a threshold is acceptable, Import-Module also supports -MinimumVersion. Microsoft documents using a fully qualified module name to select a particular version when multiple versions are available. Microsoft’s Import-Module reference

Checking a version does not update the module

The commands above inspect module information or choose a version to import; they do not update a module. Update-Module -Name ModuleName installs the newest version from an online gallery only for modules installed locally with Install-Module. The update command also supports -RequiredVersion when you want a particular version. Microsoft’s Update-Module reference
