Before buying a phone, check the exact model’s official support terms—not just a brand’s headline promise. Confirm how long it receives operating-system upgrades and security updates, when that period starts, how often patches are scheduled, and whether the terms cover your region or carrier. Then compare the support still remaining at purchase with how long you expect to keep the phone.
How do I check how long a phone gets updates?
Use the manufacturer’s official, model-specific support page or a dated policy announcement. A store listing or a general claim such as “long-term support” may not specify which models qualify or what kind of updates are included.

- Identify the exact phone. Record its full model name and variant, including regional or carrier-specific SKU where available. A promise covering selected models does not automatically cover every phone from the same brand.
- Find the official policy for that model. Prefer a stated duration or end date to vague wording. Check that the page names the model or clearly defines the eligible product group.
- Separate OS upgrades from security updates. These are different commitments. Look for a duration or end date for each rather than treating “years of updates” as one undifferentiated promise.
- Check when the clock starts. Policies may count from first sale, announcement, or availability in a particular market. If a phone has been on sale for a while, some of its promised support may already have elapsed.
- Check patch cadence and rollout qualifications. Monthly, quarterly, and less frequent security schedules differ. Confirm whether timing varies by market, carrier, or model.
- Calculate the remaining support. Compare the expected end date with your purchase date and how long you plan to own the phone. For a discounted older model, the remaining term matters more than the original number of years.
- Recheck before purchase. Eligible-model lists and support details can change, so verify the current official page close to the time you buy.
How many years of updates does this phone get?
There is no single Android-wide duration. The answer depends on the exact model and on whether the manufacturer is counting operating-system upgrades, security updates, or both. These official examples illustrate why model-specific terms matter; they are not a ranking of all phone brands.

Read dated policy announcements carefully
Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement promised up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select devices. Its footnote says availability and timing of upgrades and features may vary by model and by the timing of Android upgrades. Treat that as a dated policy for the select devices it covers, not as a blanket promise for every Galaxy phone or a substitute for current model-specific information.
Will this phone still get security updates?
Check the manufacturer’s current eligible-device list and the phone’s support end date or applicable term. A device can stop receiving security updates even while it remains usable, and a general brand promise does not establish that a specific model is still covered.

- Look for the exact model on the current security schedule or support page.
- Check whether the schedule is monthly, quarterly, or biannual, and whether the manufacturer says timing varies by market, network provider, or model.
- Calculate the remaining period from the policy’s stated start point, not from the day you buy a discounted phone.

A settings screen can show whether an update is currently available, but it cannot by itself prove how many future years of support remain. For Pixel, Google’s instructions are Settings > System > Software update; the screen shows update status and next steps. Other manufacturers may use different menu paths, so follow that maker’s instructions for the specific phone.

Put both phones’ official terms side by side before deciding. Compare the same categories rather than comparing one phone’s OS-upgrade figure with another phone’s security-support figure.
