To check a new laptop, inspect it while powered off, test the screen and everyday functions, then run the manufacturer’s diagnostics. Once it passes those checks, install Windows updates, review security and privacy settings, and back up important files before migrating. A clean test only means that the checks you ran did not detect a problem; it is not a guarantee that every component is fault-free.
This first-day checklist focuses on Windows 11. Menu names and available tests vary by laptop model, Windows edition, and device-management policy. The physical checks below are practical observations, not official pass/fail tolerances.

What to do before turning it on
Keep your purchase records
Save the receipt or order confirmation, the laptop’s serial number or service tag, and any included accessories. Keep the packaging until the laptop has passed your initial checks. Return and warranty rules depend on the seller, product terms, and location, so check the terms that apply to your purchase rather than assuming a universal deadline.

With the laptop powered off, look for shipping damage, cracks, gaps, a bent chassis, damaged feet, or debris beneath the screen. Open and close the lid gently and notice whether the hinges feel loose or catch. Check the charger and cable for visible damage. Do not pry open the case or remove internal parts from a new laptop.

How to check the screen, keyboard, and other functions
Start the laptop and check the functions you expect to use. A known-good accessory can help test a port; for wireless connections, use a network or device you know works.
- Screen: At ordinary brightness, look at simple solid backgrounds for obvious lines, flicker, dead pixels, or pressure marks.
- Keyboard and touchpad: Type on every key and try moving, clicking, and scrolling with the touchpad.
- Audio and camera: Play sound through the speakers, test the webcam, and check that the microphone picks up audio.
- Connections: Connect to Wi-Fi and, where practical, pair a Bluetooth device. Test each port with a compatible accessory if you have one.
A brief check can reveal obvious symptoms, but it cannot establish complete component health. If something behaves unexpectedly, note what you observed and use the laptop maker’s diagnostic tools before deciding whether to contact support.

Run the laptop maker’s diagnostics
Use the manufacturer’s utility where one is available for your exact model. A test may run inside Windows or in a pre-boot environment outside the operating system. The latter can help distinguish a hardware symptom from a Windows or software problem, but no single passing test certifies the whole laptop.

HP: begin with a Fast Test
HP documents diagnostics for Windows and UEFI. Start with the Fast Test; if it passes but a symptom continues, run the relevant extensive test. HP says its particular Fast Test takes about four minutes, but test duration depends on the tool and is not a general estimate for checking laptops. Dell lists SupportAssist health checks, a pre-boot assessment, and an LCD self-test. Find the current instructions for your exact model on Dell’s diagnostics page; entry steps and available tests can differ.
If a diagnostic reports a failure, save the result and any error or failure ID. Contact the seller or manufacturer rather than opening the laptop yourself.

Install Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if Windows requests it.
- After restarting, return to Windows Update and check again; updates may arrive in stages.
Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. If a device-specific driver or firmware update is needed, use Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official support page for your model. Firmware procedures are model-specific; do not apply instructions for a different laptop.
Review Windows security and privacy
Check Device security
Open Windows Security > Device security. Review the status and available settings for Secure Boot, Core isolation, the security processor (TPM), and data encryption. Which items appear and how they are configured depend on the laptop’s hardware and Windows version.

Check whether device encryption is enabled. Before relying on encryption, make sure you can retain and retrieve its recovery key through the appropriate Microsoft or organization-supported method.
Choose diagnostic-data settings deliberately
During setup, Windows lets you choose whether to send optional diagnostic data. Microsoft Support says, “Regardless of whether you choose to send Optional diagnostic data, your device will be just as secure and will operate normally.” Optional diagnostics can include additional information about device activity and, in some crash cases, memory state that could include parts of a file in use. To review the setting later, open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. See Microsoft’s diagnostics, feedback, and privacy guidance.
Back up before moving files or making major changes
Back up important files before migrating from an old computer or making major changes. Microsoft recommends backing up before installing Windows 11 and describes external storage as one option for transferring files. A physical drive, such as an external SSD for laptop backup, is optional; cloud storage or another suitable backup method may work for you. Keep the old device or a separate backup until you have confirmed that the files you need are on the new laptop. See Microsoft’s file-transfer guidance and Windows 11 preparation guidance.

Check which Windows version the laptop is running and whether it is the version you intended to buy. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows support notice.
What to do if you find a problem
- Photograph visible damage and note the symptom, when it occurs, and any steps that reproduce it.
- Save diagnostic results and error or failure IDs. Record the laptop’s serial number or service tag and your purchase date.
- Contact the seller or manufacturer promptly using the process and terms that apply to your purchase and location.
- Keep the laptop and its accessories intact; do not open the case to investigate a new machine.
There is no return or warranty period that applies universally: the relevant rules depend on your location, seller, and product terms.
