Check 5G at the places you actually use your phone—home, work, your commute and regular destinations—then confirm your exact phone model works on the carrier and compare plans by total cost, data and terms. Coverage maps are useful predictions, not guarantees of indoor reception or reliable performance.
Check coverage where you will use the phone
Start with an independent coverage checker if one is available in your country, then compare its results with the carrier’s own map. Search your home address or postcode and check work, your commute and other places you visit often. A broad national coverage claim cannot tell you whether service will reach a particular room, building or stretch of road.

Check indoor and outdoor predictions separately where the map provides both. Walls, building materials, terrain, trees and vehicles can affect reception; network congestion can also make service feel slower or less reliable than a coverage prediction suggests. Ask people who use the network in the same places for firsthand context, while remembering their results may differ by device, location and time.
UK example: Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile
In the UK, Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile lets you search by postcode and view predicted indoor and outdoor coverage. It compares EE, O2, Three and Vodafone, and also offers a performance view at postal-district level. That performance information is not a promise about an individual address: Ofcom notes that conditions such as trees, buildings and walls can create local variation. Ofcom lists the underlying networks used by virtual mobile operators, so if you use a virtual provider, check its host network’s coverage and then verify the virtual provider’s own plan and service terms.

US example: FCC and carrier maps
In the US, the FCC National Broadband Map shows provider-submitted mobile coverage outdoors or in a moving vehicle; the FCC says it does not show indoor coverage. The FCC also provides a process for challenging provider coverage data using mobile speed tests. Use this map as one source of context, not a replacement for checking the carrier’s current map at your destinations.
Carrier maps have their own limits. For example, T-Mobile says its US map approximates anticipated outdoor coverage and does not guarantee service. This is T-Mobile’s qualification, not a universal description of every carrier’s map.

Understand what a coverage map can and cannot tell you
A map’s coverage prediction answers whether service is expected to be available; it does not establish the speed or consistency you will experience. Ofcom combines predicted coverage with district-level performance data based on user experience, but says local variation remains possible. Treat both map shading and performance summaries as guides, and prioritize the places and conditions that matter to you.
Ofcom’s 2025 update reported that UK-wide 4G coverage rose from 91% in 2019 to 96% in 2025, that 5G accounted for a fifth of UK mobile traffic, and that around half of mobile handsets were 5G-capable. These figures give national context only; they do not predict service at a specific address or compatibility with a particular phone.

Confirm the exact phone works with the carrier
Before buying a SIM, check the full model identifier, not just the phone’s product family or a 5G logo on the box. Confirm that the model supports the carrier’s 5G service and is compatible with its network. Also check whether the phone supports the SIM format you intend to use, such as a physical SIM or eSIM, with that provider.
5G access depends on more than the handset: coverage must be available where you use it, the device must be compatible, and the carrier’s service or plan requirements must be met. T-Mobile US, for example, says a 5G-capable device is required for its 5G network and that device and signal compatibility and qualifying service matter. Check the rules for your chosen carrier rather than applying one provider’s requirements to another.

Compare SIM plans against your real use
Once you have a shortlist of networks that look plausible at your regular destinations, compare the plan details. The lowest advertised price or a 5G label alone does not establish which plan is right for you.

| Check | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Monthly allowance and what happens when it runs out | Your typical use determines whether a small allowance is enough or a larger plan is worth paying for. |
| Total cost | Recurring monthly charge and any other charges stated by the provider | Compare the cost over the period you expect to keep the plan, not just an introductory offer. |
| Speed and traffic policies | Any stated speed limits, traffic management or other usage policies | Plan terms may affect the experience even where 5G coverage is available. |
| Hotspot | Whether tethering is permitted and any related limits | Phone-as-hotspot use may be treated differently from ordinary handset data. |
| Calls and texts | Included allowances and any limits relevant to your use | Data is only one part of the service you may need. |
| Roaming | Included destinations, allowances and charges | International use can have separate limits and costs. |
| Commitment and cancellation | Contract length, renewal terms and how to cancel | These terms determine how easily you can switch if the service does not suit you. |
There is no universally best carrier or SIM plan without knowing your location, phone, budget and usage. Compare coverage at your destinations first, then weigh cost, allowances, speed policies, roaming, hotspot and flexibility. Check the provider’s current terms before signing up; availability and conditions can change.
Consider a lower-commitment way to try service
If you want to find out how a network works with your phone and in your routine, Ofcom points to SIM-only monthly or pay-as-you-go service as ways to test without a long commitment. The terms still matter: check price, allowance, renewal, roaming and cancellation details with the provider before starting.
If reception is weak indoors but you have broadband, Wi-Fi calling may help, provided both your phone and carrier support it. Ofcom discusses Wi-Fi calling as a possible option, not a guarantee that every device or plan includes it.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before choosing
- Check an independent map where available and the carrier’s current map.
- Search home, work, commute and frequent destinations; review indoor and outdoor predictions separately where possible.
- Treat mapped coverage as a prediction and performance summaries as context, not a guarantee for your exact location.
- Confirm the exact phone model’s 5G capability, carrier compatibility and SIM or eSIM support.
- Compare plan data, total recurring cost, calls and texts, speed or traffic policies, hotspot, roaming, term and cancellation.
- If you want to test service, review current SIM-only monthly or pay-as-you-go terms before committing.
