In an Xbox Party, type a message in Party Text Chat and turn on text-to-speech so other party members hear it read aloud. To understand spoken replies without listening, enable speech-to-text. These are separate features: one sends your typed words as audio, while the other displays other players’ speech as text.
Choose the option that matches what you need
| Option | What it does | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Party Chat text-to-speech | Reads your typed Party Text Chat messages aloud to other party members. | Xbox Party Chat, with the feature enabled. |
| Speech-to-text transcription | Displays other players’ spoken chat as on-screen text; it does not send your message. | Party Chat or supported in-game chat, depending on settings and the game. |
| Game text chat | Lets you enter messages into a game-provided text channel. Whether messages are also narrated depends on the title. | Only games that implement text chat. |
| Friend messaging | Sends written messages to friends rather than speaking them into a live chat. | Xbox console or mobile app features where currently available; it is a separate channel from a console party or game chat. |
How to have Xbox Party Chat read your messages aloud
Xbox’s Party Chat text-to-speech feature turns messages you type in Party Text Chat into synthesized speech for other members of the party. Xbox described it as an option for people who cannot or choose not to speak, as well as players who need chat in an accessible format.

- Open Settings > Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription.
- Enable the text-to-speech option for Party Chat. If you are already in a party, Xbox’s instructions give the route as Options > Configure Ease of Access settings.
- Open Party Text Chat and enter your message using the on-screen controls or a supported keyboard.
- Send the message. Party members hear it read by a synthetic voice.
These menu labels come from Xbox’s May 12, 2021 announcement; wording or placement may have changed. If the route differs on your console, look in the current accessibility settings for game and chat transcription. Xbox Wire’s announcement explains the feature and its intended use.

Turn on speech transcription when you want spoken Party Chat or supported in-game chat displayed as text on screen. This is useful if you cannot hear the chat clearly or would rather read it. It is not a way to send your own message: for that, use Party Text Chat with text-to-speech or a game’s text-entry feature.

- Wired stereo headset plugs directly into the Xbox One Controller for simple set-up
- 30 millimeter High-Definition Driver delivers crystal clear audio
- Flexible noise-cancelling microphone for exceptional chat communication
- Easily accessible in-line controls for volume adjustment and microphone muting
- Comfortable light-weight design
Check the game and chat transcription settings on the console, then verify the behavior in the specific game. Xbox describes transcription for Party Chat and in-game chat, but the available channels and results can depend on the title. See Xbox’s accessibility overview for its current accessibility information.
Using text chat inside a game
In-game text chat is not available in every Xbox game, and the controls and supported channels vary. Check the game’s communication settings, controls, and help information for team, match, party, or direct text chat. Do not assume a text field exists just because the game supports voice chat.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 119 uses Gears 5 as an example of a game with a text-entry box whose typed messages can be broadcast through synthesized speech. That behavior is part of the game’s implementation; it is distinct from the console’s Party Chat text-to-speech setting.

Typing with a controller or keyboard
Use the Xbox on-screen keyboard when a supported text field opens. A wired USB keyboard can make entry faster, but Xbox’s overview describes keyboard navigation only in select games and apps. Keyboard support does not guarantee that a particular game has text chat or accepts keyboard input in its chat field.

- Before relying on a keyboard, confirm the specific game or app supports it for the task you need.
- If the game has no text-entry interface, connecting a keyboard will not add one.
- You do not need to buy a keyboard to use Party Chat text-to-speech; it is an optional way to enter text.
When friend messaging is enough
For a written message that does not need to be heard in a live party or game, use console messaging or the Xbox mobile app’s friend-chat feature where available. Xbox announced mobile-app chatting with friends in a June 15, 2021 update. That announcement does not establish that app messaging joins every console party or sends text into a game’s chat channel, so treat it as direct messaging rather than a substitute for live Party Chat. See Xbox Wire’s app update announcement and check the app’s current features.

Adaptive input devices can help people whose control needs make standard controller or keyboard entry difficult. They are an individual accessibility choice, not a requirement for Party Chat text-to-speech. Choose input hardware based on the controls you need and confirm compatibility with the console and game.
