Choose the setting that matches your situation: change Home Area only after moving, or update Current Playback Area when traveling or when YouTube TV has your present location wrong. Home Area affects the local programming you can watch and record; Current Playback Area confirms where you are watching now.
Home Area and Current Playback Area: which one should you change?
YouTube TV uses two location settings for different purposes. Its Help page explains, “What you can watch and record on YouTube TV is based on your home area.” YouTube TV Help: location settings

| Setting | When to use it | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Home Area | You have moved and your home location has changed. | The local programming tied to your account, including what you can watch and record. |
| Current Playback Area | You are traveling or YouTube TV has identified your current location incorrectly. | Verification of where you are watching now; while away, YouTube TV offers local programming for your current location. |
Do not change Home Area just to watch while away from home. Update Current Playback Area instead.
How to change your Home Area after a move
You must be physically present in the new home area when you update it. YouTube TV says Home Area changes are blocked if you have already changed it twice in the previous 12 months, or if you are not currently in the new area.

What to expect when watching away from home
Outside your Home Area, YouTube TV says you can watch programming local to your current location, but you cannot watch or record networks local to your Home Area. The service advises frequent travelers to use YouTube TV in their Home Area at least once every three months to help ensure they receive the correct local networks.

If location verification does not work
- Check location permissions: Enable location services for the YouTube TV app, or allow location access for the browser or site used in verification.
- Use the prompted verification device: If YouTube TV cannot identify your location, follow its prompt to verify from a mobile device or browser.
- Clear browser data: If the browser verification flow remains stuck, clear its cache and cookies, then try again.
- Disable VPNs or proxies while troubleshooting: YouTube TV says a VPN or proxy connection can make some streaming, Primetime channels, or YouTube Channels unavailable.
- Consider your internet provider: A YouTube TV Community guide notes that some mobile or satellite home internet providers may change IP-based location more often and trigger confirmation prompts. This is community guidance rather than an official troubleshooting rule; use the official verification flow for the steps.
