There is no single best file-upload library for every JavaScript project. For new applications, shortlist Uppy, FilePond, and Dropzone based on the interface you need, your upload destination, and whether transfers must resume after interruption. If you maintain a jQuery app, FilePond documents a jQuery integration. Avoid choosing blueimp jQuery File Upload for new work: its repository was archived on April 8, 2026 and is read-only.
How to choose a JavaScript file uploader
Start with the application’s constraints rather than a feature-count ranking. The right choice depends on how much interface the library supplies, what framework or legacy code it must fit, where files are sent, and who operates the server or storage.

- Interface: Decide whether you need a ready-to-use upload experience, a drag-and-drop form zone, or a lower-level client that leaves most UI decisions to your application.
- Framework fit: Check for an integration matching your framework, or compatibility with an existing jQuery application. For a framework-free project, confirm the library’s plain JavaScript setup.
- Destination: Identify whether uploads go to an existing HTTP endpoint, a tus server, S3-compatible storage, or a managed upload service. Destination affects which client integration is appropriate.
- Interrupted transfers: If users need to resume uploads, verify support on both the client and the server or storage configuration. A client feature alone does not establish end-to-end resumability.
- Media workflow: Separate browser-side previews or transformations from processing that happens on your server or a hosted service.
- Operational ownership: Choose between operating your own upload endpoint and storage, or relying on a hosted service for some combination of upload, delivery, and processing.
Which libraries are worth comparing?
| Option | Best fit | What the project documents | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uppy | Modular browser uploads with a destination-specific client choice | Uploader integrations for tus, S3 or compatible storage, and ordinary XHR endpoints, plus framework integrations. Uppy documentation | Optional Transloadit processing is a separate service integration; the browser uploader and hosted processing have different operational and commercial implications. Uppy project |
| FilePond | Modern upload UI, including projects that need jQuery integration | Asynchronous AJAX and chunk uploads, accessibility features, image optimization and transformations, and framework adapters. FilePond repository | Check the current package version and production setup guidance before implementation. FilePond documentation |
| Dropzone | Drag-and-drop uploads integrated with web forms | Progress bars, previews, large-file support, chunk uploads, browser-side image resizing, customization, and fallback support. Dropzone documentation | Confirm that its upload behavior and resumability approach match your own backend. |
| blueimp jQuery File Upload | Understanding or maintaining an existing installation | Historically included multiple-file uploads, drag and drop, progress, validation, previews, chunking, resumability, and client-side image resizing. GitHub repository | The repository says it was archived by its owner on April 8, 2026 and is now read-only. It is not a default choice for new applications. |
This is a feature-and-fit comparison, not a measured ranking: no independently measured performance or bundle-size results are established here.
Uppy: choose an integration for the upload destination
Uppy describes itself as a modular JavaScript uploader and provides framework integration guidance. Its documentation distinguishes among clients for tus, S3 or compatible storage, and regular XHR endpoints. That makes the destination and backend design part of the library decision, not an afterthought. Review the Uppy documentation for the integration that matches your endpoint and framework.

- Brand: Wiley
- Set of 2 Volumes
- A handy two-book set that uniquely combines related technologies Highly visual format and accessible language makes these books highly effective learning tools Perfect for beginning web designers and front-end developers
Uppy also offers optional Transloadit processing. The browser-side open-source uploader and a managed processing service should be evaluated separately: adopting the former does not by itself mean your files use the latter. See the Uppy project information.
FilePond: a bridge for jQuery and modern interfaces
FilePond supports a modern web-component approach and documents a jQuery adapter, so it is a candidate when an existing jQuery application needs an upload interface without committing to a jQuery-only uploader. Its project also lists asynchronous uploads, chunk uploads, accessibility features, image optimization and transformations, and framework adapters. Consult the FilePond repository and FilePond setup documentation for current integration and production guidance.

- Uses clear descriptions, inspiring examples, and easy-to-follow diagrams
Dropzone: a form-oriented drag-and-drop uploader
Dropzone focuses on drag-and-drop uploads in web forms. Its official documentation describes previews, progress indicators, large-file support, chunk uploads, browser-side image resizing, customization, and fallback support. It is worth considering when that form-oriented interface is the main requirement; confirm the backend contract and the exact behavior needed for interrupted transfers in the official documentation.

Chunking and resumability are not interchangeable promises. Splitting a file into chunks describes how data may be sent; reliably continuing after a disconnection requires compatible behavior across the client, protocol, and server or storage setup.
The tus project describes a resumable-upload protocol and lists tus-js-client as a JavaScript browser client; it also lists Uppy support. Check the tus implementations list and verify that the server or storage configuration you intend to deploy supports the protocol and fits your deployment. Do not infer end-to-end resume support from a library’s feature list alone.

A library and a managed service solve different operational problems. A library gives your application client-side components or upload logic; a managed service may also take responsibility for hosted upload infrastructure, delivery, or media processing. Choose based on what your team wants to operate, not just the browser interface.
Uploadcare’s July 10, 2026 comparison positions Uploadcare as a managed option alongside Uppy, FilePond, and Dropzone, and compares criteria such as modularity, resumability, image optimization, backend integration, and server-side processing. It is vendor-authored, so use it to identify questions to evaluate rather than as an independent benchmark: Uploadcare’s comparison.

Practical shortlist by project type
- New application with a specific upload destination: Start with Uppy if its documented client integration matches your endpoint or storage and you want a modular approach.
- Existing jQuery application: Evaluate FilePond’s documented jQuery integration. Treat blueimp as a legacy dependency to maintain or migrate, not a newly maintained default.
- Form whose central need is drag-and-drop: Evaluate Dropzone and confirm its server-side requirements against your form endpoint.
- Uploads must survive interruptions: Select a protocol and server/storage implementation together; verify compatibility before choosing the UI library.
- You do not want to operate upload infrastructure or processing: Compare managed services with self-hosted libraries, and account for the hosted service’s operational and commercial terms.
