What the WordPress tagline is
The tagline is the short description associated with your site title. Everyday questions such as “Where is the site description?” and “How do I edit the text under my site title?” are asking about this same WordPress setting. It is separate from the site title: changing the title does not automatically rewrite the tagline, and changing the tagline does not rename the site.

WordPress describes the field as a place to explain “in a few words” what the site is about. The official documentation states that WordPress’s default tagline value is an empty string. If a new installation displays a phrase such as “Just another WordPress site,” that text may have been supplied by a theme, starter content, demo import, or an earlier site configuration rather than being the current default value in the General Settings field.
Two decisions are involved:
- Text: what the tagline should say, or whether the field should be blank.
- Presentation: whether the active theme or template displays it, and how it is styled.
You can save a new tagline correctly and still not see it on the front end if the theme hides the tagline or does not include a Site Tagline block. Conversely, changing typography or color does not change the words stored in the setting.

Choose the right editing route
Your active theme determines which visual interface is available. Use the table below before opening a menu.
| Route | Best fit | Live preview | Commit action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settings > General | Any installation where the dashboard exposes the General Settings screen | No front-end preview in the settings form | Save Changes | It stores the text; the theme still decides whether to show it |
| Appearance > Customize > Site Identity | Classic and hybrid themes | Yes, in the Customizer preview | Publish | Theme capabilities vary; the Customizer may be hidden for an active block theme |
| Appearance > Editor > Identity | Block themes | Yes, on the Site Editor canvas | Save | The Identity section is available only when a block theme is active |
| Site Tagline block in a template | Block-theme users editing a specific header or template | Yes, on the template canvas | Save | The saved template value applies wherever that block is used |
If you are unsure which theme type is active, try the menus in this order: open Settings > General first, then check whether Appearance > Customize or Appearance > Editor is present. Do not keep looking for Customize after confirming that the site uses a block theme; use the Site Editor instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Method 1: change it in Settings > General
This is the baseline text-editing method and the safest choice when you only need to replace or remove the words.
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Open Settings > General.
- Locate the Tagline field beneath Site Title.
- Select the existing text and type the new description. To remove the tagline, delete all characters so the field is empty.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
The save action stores the edited value in the site’s basic configuration. Reload the public site and inspect the area where the title and tagline normally appear. If nothing is visible, continue to the visibility and troubleshooting sections below; an invisible tagline is usually a theme or template issue, not evidence that the text failed to save.
Writing a useful tagline
Keep the sentence short enough to work beneath a logo or title. State the subject, audience, location, or promise that distinguishes the site. For example, “Independent bookshop notes from Bristol” tells a visitor more than a generic phrase such as “Welcome to our website.” Avoid treating the tagline as a second headline packed with unrelated keywords. The field is a site description, not a place to paste a paragraph of navigation or a campaign disclaimer.

Removing the tagline with this method
There is no separate delete button. An empty Tagline field is the removal action: clear the text and click Save Changes. Whether the blank value produces no visible line depends on the theme. A theme can hide an empty tagline automatically, reserve the space, or display its own static text; inspect the front end after saving.
Method 2: use Appearance > Customize > Site Identity
The Customizer is the visual route for classic and hybrid themes. WordPress.org describes it as a way to preview changes before publishing them to the whole site.
- From the dashboard, open Appearance > Customize.
- Select Site Identity.
- Edit the Tagline text box. Clear it completely if you want no tagline.
- Watch the live preview to see how the title and description are positioned in the active theme.
- Click Publish to make the previewed change public.
Typing in the Customizer is not the final commit. Until Publish is clicked, visitors continue to see the previously published value. The Site Identity panel can also provide controls to display or hide the site title and tagline. If the text is saved but absent from the preview, check those visibility controls before changing the wording again.
Why Customize may be missing
A block theme can hide the Customizer unless a plugin requires it. That is an interface difference, not a missing WordPress feature. Switch to Appearance > Editor > Identity when a block theme is active. Theme capabilities also vary, so a classic theme may expose fewer or different Site Identity controls than another classic theme.
Method 3: edit a block theme in Appearance > Editor > Identity
Block themes manage global site identity through the Site Editor. The Identity section is available only with an active block theme.

- Open Appearance > Editor in the dashboard.
- Choose Identity in the Site Editor sidebar.
- Edit Site Tagline and review the result on the canvas.
- Click Save and confirm the selected changes when WordPress presents the save panel.
WordPress explains that the Identity section lets you add or edit the Site Title, Site Tagline, Site Logo, and Site Icon at a high level without editing individual blocks. The saved value is reflected on the canvas and on the site. If the canvas has no visible tagline, the template may not contain a Site Tagline block or its display setting may be disabled.
Identity versus a template edit
Identity is the global site-level place to set the words. A template edit changes the layout and the location in which those words appear. Use Identity when the wording is the problem; open the relevant template when the tagline is stored correctly but is missing, misplaced, or presented in an unwanted header area.
Change the tagline inside a block-theme template
Block themes can place a Site Tagline block directly in a header, footer, or another template part. Editing that block is useful when you are already working on the design.
- Open Appearance > Editor and navigate to the template or template part that contains the site header.
- Click the existing Site Tagline block. If it is absent, use the inserter to add a Site Tagline block where the description should appear.
- Edit the block’s text or select the block and adjust its available content settings.
- Save the template.
WordPress notes that saving a template applies the Site Tagline value wherever that block is used. Its documentation also describes the value as affecting places such as the browser title bar, search results, and the Tagline field in Settings > General. Because a template can be reused, one saved edit may change the tagline presentation across every page that uses that template.
When the block is missing
A header without a Site Tagline block cannot display the stored tagline in that location. Insert the block, save the template, and check the front end. If the site uses multiple templates or template parts, verify the one assigned to the page you are viewing; editing an unused template will not alter the visible header.

Make the tagline visible or hide it
Changing the text and controlling visibility are separate tasks. A theme may provide a Site Identity switch to display or hide the title and tagline. In a block theme, the template may omit the Site Tagline block altogether, or the block’s settings may hide it.
To show a stored tagline
- Confirm that the Tagline field contains text in Settings > General or in Site Editor Identity.
- In a classic or hybrid theme, open Appearance > Customize > Site Identity and enable the relevant display control.
- In a block theme, open the header or template part and add or select the Site Tagline block.
- Save using the interface you are working in: Save Changes, Publish, or Save.
To hide it without deleting the wording
Use the theme’s Site Identity display control when available, or remove the Site Tagline block from the block-theme template. This preserves the site description for settings and other uses while preventing that theme location from showing it. If you instead want the site to have no tagline at all, clear the Tagline field and save it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Style the tagline without changing its words
Typography, color, size, and spacing belong to presentation controls, not the Tagline text field. In a block theme, open Styles and select the Site Tagline settings. WordPress’s Styles documentation says global Styles can set or unset the Site Tagline and update its font and color. Depending on the theme, block-level settings may provide additional controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Appearance > Editor > Styles for a block theme.
- Choose the Site Tagline element or its typography and color controls.
- Adjust the font, size, color, or related typography settings.
- Save the style changes.
Do not use styling to solve a text problem. If the wrong phrase appears, edit the Tagline value. If the right phrase is present but too faint, large, or visually crowded, use Styles or the theme’s Site Identity controls.
Troubleshoot a tagline that did not change
| Symptom | Likely reason | Action |
|---|---|---|
| There is no Customize menu. | The active theme may be a block theme; the Customizer can also be hidden when a block theme is active unless a plugin requires it. | Use Appearance > Editor > Identity, then save from the Site Editor. |
| The preview changed, but visitors still see the old text. | The Customizer preview was not published. | Return to Appearance > Customize > Site Identity and click Publish. |
| The General Settings value changed, but the public page did not. | The theme or template does not display the tagline. | Check Site Identity display controls, then inspect the header template for a Site Tagline block. |
| The block-editor change is visible on the canvas but not on the site. | The template or style change was not saved. | Open the affected template or Identity panel again and click Save. |
| The tagline is saved but invisible. | The theme hides the title/tagline, the block is absent, or the layout places it outside the expected area. | Enable the display control or add/select the Site Tagline block in the active template. |
| Old text still appears after saving. | A page cache, browser cache, host cache, or plugin cache may be serving an older page. | Clear or purge the caches provided by your hosting environment and plugins, then reload. The exact sequence is environment-specific. |
Use one route at a time
When diagnosing the problem, make one change and commit it before moving to another interface. For example, edit the value in Settings, save, and check the front end. If the value is correct but absent, investigate visibility in the theme or template. Switching between Settings, Customize, and Site Editor without saving each change makes it difficult to tell whether the problem is wording, publication, layout, or caching.
Best Value
Verify the result in the places that matter
After the commit action, check the actual visitor-facing result rather than relying only on an editor preview.
- Open the home page and the header area where the site title appears.
- Check a page that uses the same header or template part; block themes can use different templates for different content types.
- Confirm that the wording, capitalization, punctuation, and spacing are exactly what you intended.
- If you removed the tagline, verify that no unwanted placeholder line remains.
- If you changed a template, confirm that the saved template is the one assigned to the page you are viewing.
- When an old value remains, test again after the relevant host, plugin, or browser cache has been purged.
Template-level changes can have a wider scope than a single page because the same Site Tagline block may be reused. Conversely, a page built with a different template may not show a change made to another template part.
Common scenarios and the shortest fix
“I only want to replace the words.”
Open Settings > General, edit Tagline, and click Save Changes. This avoids changing the design.
“I want to see the result while I edit.”
For a classic or hybrid theme, use Appearance > Customize > Site Identity and finish with Publish. For a block theme, use Appearance > Editor > Identity and finish with Save.
“I deleted it, but a line still appears.”
Inspect the theme’s Site Identity display settings and the active template. A static text block or a theme-generated label may be separate from the stored Tagline field.
“The tagline is correct, but it looks wrong.”
Leave the text unchanged and adjust the Site Tagline typography, color, or related Styles settings. This keeps content and presentation separate.

Key points to remember
- Settings > General is the dependable text-editing route.
- Customizer > Site Identity is the visual route for classic and hybrid themes and requires Publish.
- Site Editor > Identity is the block-theme route and requires Save.
- Leaving the Tagline field empty removes the stored tagline.
- Whether visitors see a tagline depends on the theme, template, display controls, and the presence of a Site Tagline block.
- Use Styles or block settings for typography and color; those controls do not replace the tagline text.
