To convert terrain edited before Valheim’s 0.150.3 update, enable the game console with Steam’s -console launch option, travel close to the old heavily terraformed area, and run optterrain. The command converts legacy terrain modifications in the nearby area to the newer terrain-modification system. It is not documented as a whole-world conversion, so visit and process separate legacy areas individually. Back up both the world and character before you begin.

What changed in Valheim 0.150.3
Valheim patch 0.150.3 introduced a new terrain-modification system designed to reduce network instances and improve loading performance. The change applies to terrain work performed with the hoe, pickaxe, or cultivator after the patch. Iron Gate’s patch note states that all such modifications made after 0.150.3 automatically use the new system.

That leaves older, heavily modified areas using the previous terrain system. For those locations, Iron Gate added the built-in optterrain command. Its purpose is conversion, not fresh terraforming: it changes old terrain modifications in the nearby area so they use the newer system.
The distinction matters in an established world. A base built on terrain edited before 0.150.3 may still contain legacy modifications even if you have continued playing for years. Conversely, a hill leveled or path dug after the patch does not normally need conversion because it was saved with the new system from the start.

The patch note does not define a precise distance for “nearby.” Treat the command as local-area work rather than a guaranteed map-wide operation.
Prepare safely before changing the save
Back up the world and character
Make a separate backup of the world save and the character before running the command. Keep that backup untouched until you have visited the converted sites and confirmed that buildings, paths, walls, farms, and other structures still sit correctly on the ground.
Backing up both files matters. A world backup protects the terrain and construction; a character backup protects the player, inventory, skills, and progress used to access the world. Use your normal Valheim save-management method and verify that the copies are stored somewhere separate from the active save.
List the legacy locations you actually need
Conversion is most useful for places where you performed substantial work before 0.150.3: a flattened settlement, a deep excavation, a long road, a harbor approach, or another area with extensive hoe and pickaxe changes. You do not need to process every untouched biome or every minor post-update adjustment.

If you cannot remember when a location was edited, use the update boundary as the practical test. Work that definitely happened after 0.150.3 already uses the new system. For uncertain locations, include them in your visit list and inspect the result after conversion rather than assuming the entire world shares one terrain format.
Plan for several visits
Because optterrain operates on the nearby area, gather the coordinates or landmarks for separate legacy builds before starting. A single run near one base should not be treated as proof that a distant mining camp or road has also been converted.
Enable Valheim’s console in Steam
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Valheim and choose Properties.
- On the General page, find the Launch Options field.
- Enter the launch argument
-consoleexactly as shown, including the leading hyphen. - Close the Properties window and start Valheim from Steam.
The argument enables the in-game console for that launch. If you normally start the game through another shortcut or launcher, make sure the same argument is present on the launch path you use; otherwise the console may remain unavailable.
After loading the world, open Valheim’s in-game console using the console key available in your installation. The launch argument only enables the console; it does not run the conversion automatically.

Run optterrain on an old terrain area
- Load the world containing the legacy terrain.
- Travel close to the old, heavily terraformed area. Stand near the build or landscape you want to convert rather than in a distant, untouched region.
- Open the in-game console.
- Type
optterrainin lowercase, with no extra argument. - Submit the command.
- Move through the area and inspect the terrain and nearby structures.
- Travel to the next separate legacy area and repeat the command there if needed.
The command is intended to convert old terrain modifications in the nearby area to the new modification system. It does not ask you to select a building, draw a boundary, or provide a world seed. Your position when you run it determines which nearby legacy terrain is considered.
Use the command once per area, not once per individual tile
You do not need to issue a separate command for every hoe stroke, pickaxe mark, or cultivator patch. The documented behavior is area-based: move close to a legacy build and run optterrain so the old modifications in that vicinity are converted together.

A world with several pre-0.150.3 settlements may require several runs. After converting the main base, visit other old structures such as remote farms, portal hubs, roads, quarries, or defensive walls and process each location while you are nearby. The official description does not promise a whole-world pass from one command, so do not assume unloaded or distant areas were changed.
What optterrain does—and does not do
- It does: convert old terrain modifications in the nearby area to the newer terrain-modification system.
- It targets: legacy edits made before the 0.150.3 change, particularly areas with heavy terraforming.
- It does not require: a third-party utility for the conversion described by Iron Gate.
- It is not documented as: a whole-world conversion command with a selectable map-wide scope.
- It is not needed for: hoe, pickaxe, and cultivator edits made after 0.150.3, which already use the new system automatically.
The command should therefore be viewed as a compatibility and performance-maintenance step for old construction zones, not as a general terrain-reset tool. It does not replace ordinary building, leveling, digging, or planting commands.

Inspect the world after conversion
Walk around the converted location instead of checking only the spot where you entered the command. Look at slopes, retaining walls, foundations, roads, stair approaches, cultivated plots, and any underground or waterfront construction that depends on the ground shape.
Iron Gate’s later Ashlands support guidance warns that terrain changes associated with update-driven generation can alter the ground beneath existing buildings and cause collapses. That warning concerns terrain generation during updates rather than proving that every optterrain run will damage a structure. It does establish a sensible precaution for this operation: preserve a backup and inspect buildings after terrain-related changes.
If a structure appears affected
- Stop making additional terrain edits in the area so you do not overwrite the state you are trying to assess.
- Check the full footprint of the building, including foundations, supports, ramps, walls, and nearby ground.
- Compare the current world with your pre-conversion backup if anything has shifted, collapsed, or become unusable.
- If the result is unacceptable, close the session and restore the backed-up world and character using your normal save-recovery process.
- Keep the backup until you have completed every legacy area you intend to convert.
Do not delete the backup immediately after seeing the command complete. A problem may only become obvious when you walk around the entire settlement or load it again later.

The console does not appear
- Reopen Valheim’s Steam Properties and confirm that
-consoleis in the Launch Options field. - Check the spelling and hyphen;
consolewithout the hyphen is not the documented launch argument. - Fully exit and relaunch the game after changing the option.
- Make sure you are starting the same Valheim installation whose Steam launch options you edited.
optterrain produces no obvious change
- Move closer to the old terraformed area and run the command again.
- Confirm that the terrain was actually edited before 0.150.3. Post-update edits already use the new system, so there may be nothing to convert.
- Inspect a wider portion of the local build; the conversion is described as nearby-area work, not a change to one selected patch of ground.
- Check a separate legacy location independently. A successful run at one base does not establish that distant areas were processed.
You expected the entire world to convert
The official description says the command converts old modifications “in the nearby area.” It does not describe a world-wide scan or provide a radius. Treat each old settlement or infrastructure cluster as a separate job and repeat the visit-and-run procedure as necessary.
You are considering a third-party terrain tool
A third-party utility may offer unrelated editing or reset features, but it is not needed for the documented conversion. The built-in command is the supported path described for old terrain after 0.150.3. Introducing another tool also creates a separate compatibility and backup concern, so use it only for a different requirement that optterrain cannot address.

A practical conversion checklist
- Identify terrain work that predates 0.150.3.
- Back up the world save and character save.
- Add
-consoleto Valheim’s Steam Launch Options. - Launch the game and load the correct world.
- Travel close to the first legacy terraforming project.
- Open the in-game console and submit
optterrain. - Inspect the surrounding terrain and every nearby structure.
- Repeat at other distant legacy areas.
- Keep the backup until all converted locations are confirmed.
Frequently misunderstood cases
“I have played this world since before 0.150.3. Does everything need conversion?”
No. The relevant question is when each terrain modification was made, not simply when the world was created. Older heavily terraformed locations are candidates for optterrain; edits made after 0.150.3 were automatically saved with the new system.
“Do I need to convert a new road built after the patch?”
No conversion is required for post-0.150.3 hoe, pickaxe, or cultivator work. You can still back up the world as good save-management practice, but optterrain is aimed at legacy modifications.
“Can I run the command from my spawn point?”
Only if the old terrain you want to convert is nearby. The documented scope is the nearby area, so travel to the legacy build first rather than relying on a distant command execution.
“Will running it rebuild or redesign my base?”
The command’s documented role is to convert the terrain-modification representation. It is not described as a building redesign, terrain reset, or replacement for manual construction. Inspect the result because any operation involving terrain can affect structures that depend on the ground.

For old Valheim terraforming, the supported procedure is simple: back up the world and character, enable the console with -console, stand near the pre-0.150.3 terrain, and run optterrain. Process other legacy areas separately, because the command is described as nearby-area conversion rather than a whole-world operation. Leave post-0.150.3 hoe, pickaxe, and cultivator edits alone; they already use the new terrain system.
