Which RedM settings control the name and description?
RedM servers commonly expose three related ConVars in the configuration. They are easy to confuse because guides use different wording for “server name,” and the public listing may not consistently reflect the same field in every setup.

A practical configuration therefore looks like this:

sv_hostname "Frontier County RP"Use ordinary text first. If your server list still shows an old value after a restart, treat the three settings as separate values rather than assuming one automatically replaces the others.

Choose where to make the change
The correct editing location depends on how the server is hosted. The setting names are the same, but the interface that writes them may differ.

Do not edit a local copy and assume the hosted instance will read it. Confirm that you are changing the configuration used by the process that actually starts your RedM server.
Change the name and description in txAdmin
txAdmin’s CFG Editor is the most direct route when your server is managed there. The labels and layout can vary slightly by txAdmin version or hosting integration, but the configuration entries are plain text.
- Open txAdmin and select the RedM server you want to modify.
- Open CFG Editor. If your installation exposes a recipe-generated configuration, open the active configuration rather than an unused template.
- Search for
sv_projectName. Replace only the text between the quotation marks. Keep the ConVar name and the quotation marks intact. - Search for
sv_projectDesc. Replace the existing text with a concise description of the server’s theme, features or rules. - Search for
sv_hostnameand set it to the same name you used forsv_projectName. This removes ambiguity between the project name and the hostname used by the listing. - Save the configuration in CFG Editor.
- Restart the RedM server from txAdmin. A browser listing normally will not be a useful test until the process has restarted and loaded the edited file.
- Open the server browser and look for the new name and description. Check the exact listing, not just the text currently visible in the editor.
If one value changes in txAdmin but another does not, reopen the file after saving and inspect all three entries. A recipe or panel may be writing one of them separately.

Edit server.cfg directly
Direct editing is equivalent to CFG Editor as long as you modify the active server.cfg. Make a backup before changing it so you can restore the previous working version if the server fails to start.
- Stop or otherwise place the server in the maintenance state recommended by your host before editing its files.
- Open the active
server.cfgin the host file manager, SFTP editor or local text editor. - Locate existing lines for
sv_projectName,sv_projectDescandsv_hostname. Edit the existing lines instead of creating competing duplicates. - Keep each value on one quoted line. For example:
sv_projectName "Frontier County RP"
sv_projectDesc "Serious role-play, player-owned businesses and weekly events"
sv_hostname "Frontier County RP"- If one of the entries is absent, add it with the same syntax and place it with the other server identity settings.
- Save the file without changing its filename or extension.
- Start or restart the server.
- After startup, inspect the browser listing and, if necessary, reopen the file to confirm the values were not rewritten by a startup recipe.
Do not put a comment marker in front of a line you expect the server to use. A line beginning with # is treated as a comment and will not set the value.

Use a hosting panel’s Startup or settings field
Some managed hosts do not expect customers to edit server.cfg manually. Their control panel may provide a Startup, Variables or server-settings page with fields for the name and description. Nodecraft and XGamingServer describe this style of workflow, while other hosts expose the underlying file.
- Open the panel for the correct RedM instance.
- Find the Startup, Variables or configuration section used to generate the server launch settings.
- Enter the new name in the field that writes the server hostname or project name.
- Enter the description in the field that writes the project description.
- Save the panel settings and restart the server from that panel.
- Check the resulting
server.cfg, if the panel allows it, and verify thatsv_projectName,sv_projectDescandsv_hostnamecontain the intended values.
Panel labels are not standardized. If the panel offers only one “Server name” field, ask the provider which ConVar it changes. The host controls the template and therefore is the authority on how that particular panel maps its fields.

Restart and verify the public listing
Saving a file changes configuration on disk; it does not retroactively change values already loaded by a running process. Shockbyte’s RedM guidance specifically requires a restart after editing. Use a complete server restart rather than assuming that reconnecting your game client reloads the configuration.
- Save the configuration or panel form.
- Restart the server and wait for it to finish starting.
- Open the RedM server browser and search for the new name.
- Read the listing’s description and compare it with
sv_projectDesc. - If the old name remains, inspect both
sv_projectNameandsv_hostname; guides disagree about which one the browser uses. - If neither value is present after startup, check the active configuration path and the startup log before making further edits.
The browser is the final check because the editor shows what you intended to write, while the listing shows what the running server advertised.

Why the browser may show the wrong name
The two name variables do not match
Some guides call sv_projectName the name edited in CFG Editor. Nodecraft, Vexium and XGamingServer identify sv_hostname as the browser name. This is a source conflict, not a reason to choose one blindly. Set both to the same value, restart, and then test the listing.
You edited an inactive file
A host can maintain more than one configuration or generate one file from a recipe. If the editor shows the new value but startup restores the old one, confirm which file the launch process reads and whether the panel regenerates it.

A template redeployed over your edits
txAdmin recipe templates can construct sv_hostname and sv_projectName from placeholders. Running the deployer again can replace manual edits. Check both values after every redeploy and update the template or its variables when the deployment workflow supports that.
The process was not restarted
A saved configuration is not proof that the running process loaded it. Restart, wait for startup to complete, and check the listing again before changing additional settings.
The description changed but the name did not
This usually means the description variable was loaded while the browser is reading the other name variable. Compare all three entries and make the two name values identical.

The strongest available formatting guidance comes from Cfx.re’s FiveM material and forum reports, not a RedM-specific official manual. Treat these as practical precautions rather than guaranteed RedM rules.
- Set
sv_projectName,sv_projectDescandsv_hostnametogether. Cfx.re forum guidance recommends configuring the three as a set. - Keep the name simple while troubleshooting. Forum users have reported listing problems when project names contain pipe characters such as
|or emoji. These are user reports, not confirmed universal restrictions. - Do not leave a stray active
sv_master1line. Cfx.re issue guidance notes that an uncommented line can make a server appear private in the list. If the line is intended to be inactive, retain its#comment marker. - A missing required variable can produce a startup error and keep a server off the list according to FiveM documentation summaries. RedM-specific behavior has not been confirmed, so use the startup log to distinguish a configuration failure from a browser delay.
Start with plain letters, numbers and spaces. Once the server appears reliably, add decorative characters one at a time if you need them, checking the listing after each restart.
Diagnose startup warnings and missing ConVars
Some Windows artifact builds have been reported to display a false hostname_rework warning even when the relevant variables are set. If the server starts and the warning appears, verify the actual registered commands instead of assuming the warning proves the configuration is missing.
- Let the server finish starting.
- Use the
cmdlistcommand in the server console. - Confirm that the expected hostname-related ConVars are registered.
- Check the active configuration for correctly spelled entries and matching quotation marks.
- Test the browser listing after a restart.
If cmdlist does not show the expected commands, the issue is more likely an artifact, build or startup-registration problem than a simple spelling mistake in the name. Consult the host’s build-specific support information before repeatedly editing the same lines.
What the available documentation does—and does not—establish
No official RedM document confirming the exact browser behavior of these three ConVars was located. The practical procedure is supported by RedM hosting guides and txAdmin recipe templates, while the closest verified official material concerns FiveM. That distinction matters when diagnosing a listing that behaves differently from a guide.

Use this sequence whenever you rename a server, change its role-play theme or update its rules text:
- Record the current working configuration or make a backup.
- Choose the interface that owns the active configuration: txAdmin CFG Editor, direct
server.cfgediting or the host’s panel. - Set
sv_projectNameandsv_hostnameto the same plain-text name. - Set
sv_projectDescto the current description. - Save, then restart the server.
- Check startup output for configuration errors.
- Check the browser listing for both the name and description.
- If a recipe or redeploy process runs later, inspect the three values again because generated configuration may overwrite them.
This workflow separates four different failure points—wrong editor, wrong file, failed startup and browser-variable mismatch—so you can correct the relevant layer instead of changing unrelated server settings.
