To change a Palworld dedicated server’s name or description, stop the server, open PalWorldSettings.ini, edit the ServerName and ServerDescription values inside the single OptionSettings=(...) line, save the file, and restart the server. If you use a hosting panel or a Docker image that generates settings at startup, make the change in that panel or through its environment variables instead; otherwise, your file edit may be replaced.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Palworld servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What controls the name and description?
Palworld stores dedicated-server gameplay and identity settings in PalWorldSettings.ini. The public name is controlled by the ServerName key, while the text shown as the server description is controlled by ServerDescription. Both keys belong to the comma-separated OptionSettings=(...) group in that file.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis is a server-side setting. Changing a local game’s display name, a saved world name, or a shortcut on the machine running the game does not change the dedicated server listing. The edit must be made in the configuration used by the running server instance.
Before editing: stop the server and identify who owns the settings
Stop the process first
Shut down the dedicated server cleanly before opening the file. An edit made while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down, so a successful save in a text editor is not proof that the new value will survive. Stop the service from your service manager, hosting panel, Docker stack, or server console, depending on how you run it.

Decide whether the file or a control panel is authoritative
On a self-hosted installation, PalWorldSettings.ini is normally the place to edit. Some game-server panels, however, write values such as ServerName, maximum player count, and passwords from a Startup tab or startup command every time the server launches. If that describes your setup, the panel is the authoritative source. Change the name and description there, or disable the setting that regenerates the file, rather than repeatedly editing a file that the panel replaces.
Docker deployments can have a third source of truth. The johnnyknighten Palworld image accepts environment variables beginning with PALWORLD_ and writes them into the game-settings section of PalWorldSettings.ini. In that image, PALWORLD_ServerName maps to the in-game ServerName key. Set the variable in your compose file or container configuration, recreate the container, and then inspect the generated file if you need to verify the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere to find PalWorldSettings.ini
The configuration is under the server’s Pal/Saved/Config/ directory. The final subfolder depends on the operating system:
| Server platform | Configuration directory | File to edit |
|---|---|---|
| Linux dedicated server | Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/ |
PalWorldSettings.ini |
| Windows dedicated server | Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ |
PalWorldSettings.ini |
Those paths are relative to the dedicated-server installation directory. For example, if your server files are in /opt/palworld, look under /opt/palworld/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. On Windows, open the corresponding PalSavedConfigWindowsServer folder inside the server installation. Do not confuse this directory with a player’s local save configuration.
If the file or folder does not exist
The configuration folders may not be created until the server has run at least once. Start the server once, allow it to initialize, stop it, and check the path again.

If PalWorldSettings.ini is still absent, find DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini in the server installation. Copy that file into the appropriate LinuxServer or WindowsServer configuration folder and rename the copy to exactly PalWorldSettings.ini. Keep the Default file unchanged; it is the template. The dedicated server reads the file named PalWorldSettings.ini.

Change the server name and description in the INI file
Preserve the OptionSettings structure
Open the file in a plain-text editor. The settings are normally represented by one OptionSettings=(...) line containing comma-separated key/value pairs. Keep that group on one line. Do not turn it into conventional INI sections such as [Server], and do not add a second independent OptionSettings line.
Text values use straight double quotation marks. Boolean values elsewhere in the same group use True or False; do not change unrelated values while making this edit. Preserve every existing option unless you intentionally want to change it.
Edit the two keys
Find the existing ServerName and ServerDescription entries. Replace only the text between their quotation marks. A minimal example looks like this:
OptionSettings=(ServerName="Co-op Builders",ServerDescription="A relaxed survival server for friends",...)
The ellipsis above represents the other options already present in your file; it is explanatory and must not be typed literally. In a real file, retain the complete original option list and make the two replacements in place. If the keys are not present in a copied template, add them inside the existing parentheses, separated from neighboring entries by commas:

OptionSettings=(...,ServerName="Co-op Builders",ServerDescription="A relaxed survival server for friends",...)
Use ordinary characters that your server and clients can display. Avoid an unescaped double quote inside either value because it ends the string early and can make the entire settings line invalid. Keep the comma between the two entries and the commas that separate them from all other settings.
Save without changing the filename
Save as plain text with the exact filename PalWorldSettings.ini. A text editor that silently appends .txt can produce PalWorldSettings.ini.txt, which the server will ignore. Check the visible filename and extension after saving. On Linux, also check that the account running the server can read the file.
Restart and confirm that the new values loaded
- Close the editor and confirm the file is saved in the active platform folder, not in the template directory.
- Start the dedicated server using the same service, script, panel, or container that normally launches it.
- Watch the startup log for the configuration-loading stage. The log is the quickest place to detect a malformed
OptionSettingsline or a startup process that rewrote the file. - After the server is fully online, connect with a client and inspect the server browser or connection details to see the displayed name and description.
If the values in the file are correct but the running server still shows the old text, stop it again and inspect the file after shutdown. If your changes disappeared, a panel, container entrypoint, deployment script, or another server copy is generating the active configuration.
Hosted panels: change the value where the panel starts the server
Many managed-server dashboards expose a Startup, Launch, or Configuration page. A panel may construct command-line arguments or rewrite PalWorldSettings.ini on every boot. In that situation, editing the file through a file manager can appear to work until the next restart.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Recommended panel workflow
- Stop the server from the dashboard.
- Open the panel’s Startup or launch-configuration tab.
- Look for a server-name, description, environment-variable, or generated-settings field.
- Enter the new values there, following the panel’s quoting rules. Do not add a second set of quotation marks if the field already supplies them.
- Save the startup configuration, start the server, and check the log and server browser.
If the panel has no field for the description, use its file editor to change ServerDescription after stopping the server, then determine whether a startup template or command overwrites it. A panel that rewrites the file will require a template or startup-setting change rather than a one-off file edit.

Docker deployments and PALWORLD_ variables
Containerized servers often treat the container definition as the persistent configuration. With the johnnyknighten Palworld image, variables prefixed with PALWORLD_ are written to the game settings. The naming convention removes the prefix and uses the remainder as the Palworld key, so PALWORLD_ServerName becomes ServerName.
Set the variable in the location from which your container is created, such as a Compose environment block or an orchestrator’s environment settings. Then recreate or restart the container according to that deployment’s process. Editing a generated file inside a running container may be lost when the container is replaced. After startup, inspect the persisted configuration volume and the logs to confirm that the value was written.
environment:
PALWORLD_ServerName: "Co-op Builders"
PALWORLD_ServerDescription: "A relaxed survival server for friends"
The exact Compose syntax can vary, but the important part is the two variable names and the fact that they belong in the container’s environment, not as literal text pasted into PalWorldSettings.ini. If your image is not johnnyknighten’s image, check its documented variable mapping before assuming that the same convention applies.
Troubleshooting: “Palworld server name not changing”
The server was running while you edited
Stop it, edit the file, save, and start it again. Check the file after the next shutdown. A running process can hold the old settings in memory or write its in-memory copy back to disk when it exits.
You changed the wrong copy
Search the installation for every file named PalWorldSettings.ini and confirm which server executable or service is running. The active file must be under the matching LinuxServer or WindowsServer folder inside that installation’s Pal/Saved/Config/ path. Editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini alone does not change an already initialized server.
Best Value
The line is malformed
Check for a missing comma, a curly quotation mark copied from a rich-text editor, an unmatched double quote, or a line break inserted inside OptionSettings=(...). Restore the original template or a backup, then reapply only the two text changes. Keep booleans and unrelated numeric settings in their original form.
A panel or script rewrote the file
Compare the file immediately before startup and after startup. If the old name returns, update the panel’s Startup setting, generated template, deployment script, or environment variable. A direct file edit cannot win against an automated process that regenerates the file on every launch.

Docker discarded the edit
Check whether PalWorldSettings.ini is on a persistent volume. If it exists only inside the container’s writable layer, replacing the container can remove it. Set PALWORLD_ServerName and PALWORLD_ServerDescription in the container configuration and recreate the container so the values are generated consistently.
The file is correct but the browser still shows old text
Verify the server completed a full restart and that you are viewing the intended server endpoint. A server browser can retain an old listing temporarily. One user report claims that a unique name and a restart may be needed before a server appears in Community Servers search, but that behavior is not established as a guaranteed Palworld rule. Treat it as a troubleshooting possibility, not a requirement.
The description contains unusual characters
Temporarily replace the description with simple letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation. If that works, add special characters back in small groups to identify the problematic character. An unescaped double quote is especially likely to terminate the value early.
Version and path caveats
Pocketpair’s official documentation page available for this configuration was labeled version 0.6.8 and directed readers to version 1.0.4 as the latest version. The 1.0.4 page was not available for verification here, so the key names and folder layout above should be checked against the documentation or template shipped with your exact server build if an update has changed its configuration system.

Quick Recap
A quick, reliable checklist
- Stop the dedicated server before editing.
- Identify whether a self-hosted file, hosting panel, or Docker environment controls startup values.
- Open
Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.iniorPal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini, as appropriate. - If missing, run the server once, then copy
DefaultPalWorldSettings.inito the correct folder and rename the copy. - Edit
ServerName="..."andServerDescription="..."inside the existing one-lineOptionSettings=(...)group. - Preserve commas, straight double quotes, and every unrelated setting.
- Save the exact
.inifilename, restart, and read the startup log. - If the old value returns, correct the panel, startup command, container environment, or persistent-volume setup that is regenerating the file.
