Afterpay does not offer a general control for moving any installment to a date you choose. According to Afterpay’s U.S. Help Center, there is one self-service pushback, and it applies only to Pay in 4 orders you are returning by mail. U.S. Pay Monthly due dates can’t be changed at all. Outside those cases, your realistic route is contacting Afterpay support, particularly if you are in financial hardship.

Push back a Pay in 4 payment when you’re returning an order (U.S.)
Afterpay’s U.S. Help Center says that if you’re returning an order by mail and need time for the refund to be applied, your next Pay in 4 payment can be moved back by up to two weeks from the original due date. This is a returns workflow, not a way to reschedule an ordinary installment.

- Log in to the Afterpay app.
- Tap My Afterpay at the bottom right.
- Open Orders and select the order you’re returning.
- Scroll down and tap Return order.
- Follow the prompts. If the request succeeds, the final confirmation screen shows your updated payment schedule.
Limits to know
- You can use it only once per order.
- The maximum shift is two weeks from the original due date.
- If the refund still hasn’t been processed by the new payment date and you owe an amount, two payments can fall due on the same day. Afterpay advises contacting the merchant for an update on the refund.
Pay Monthly: the date is fixed
Afterpay’s U.S. help article (updated November 22, 2024) states: “If it is a Pay Monthly order we are unable to change the due date since the due date is fixed for the life of the loan.” The return-pushback steps above don’t apply to Pay Monthly.

If you’re struggling to pay
Afterpay Australia’s hardship guidance tells customers having trouble with bills or repayments to contact Afterpay. The team discusses your circumstances and the available options, which may include moving payment dates, waiving late fees or setting up a payment plan. These are possible outcomes, not entitlements, and the guidance is Australian. Don’t assume it applies identically to U.S., Canadian, New Zealand or UK (Clearpay) accounts; confirm with your local team.

Contacting U.S. support
The U.S. Help Center offers in-app chat and a phone line. Its contact form includes an issue category called “Rescheduling or pausing payments,” which is the closest fit when the return workflow doesn’t match your case. Support can review your request, but a schedule change isn’t promised.

A quick decision path
- Identify your market and product: Pay in 4, Pay Monthly, or another.
- Returning a Pay in 4 order by mail? Use My Afterpay → Orders → your order → Return order and check the new schedule on the confirmation screen.
- On Pay Monthly? Expect the date to stay as is.
- In hardship? Contact support early and ask what arrangements are available for your account.
- Waiting on a refund? Also follow up with the merchant so a delay doesn’t leave you with two payments on one day.
