To change a FiveM server’s name and description, edit the active server.cfg file in the server root. Set sv_hostname for the server-specific hostname, then set sv_projectName and sv_projectDesc with the sets prefix. Save the file and perform a full server restart; restarting an individual resource is not enough.
What each FiveM setting controls
FiveM uses three related convars for how a server identifies itself. The official Cfx.re server commands documentation lists sv_hostname, sv_projectName and sv_projectDesc as string server variables. The project settings use the sets prefix in configuration examples.

In practice, configure all three. The Cfx.re server-issues guidance indicates that omitting either project value can produce a startup warning and can prevent the server from appearing correctly in the list. A forum report also describes a fallback to sv_hostname when sv_projectName is absent, with the fallback potentially truncated; that is community evidence rather than a documented guarantee.

Find the configuration file the server actually loads
Most self-managed installations have a server.cfg in the server-data or server root directory, but a host can place it elsewhere or start the process with a different configuration path. Check the startup command, service definition or launch script and identify the file passed to the server with its exec setting. Editing an unused copy will not change the live listing.

Make a rollback copy
Copy the current file before changing it. Keep the backup outside any automatic deployment step and note the date. If a syntax error stops startup, restoring the previous copy gives you a known working configuration while you diagnose the change.
Stop or schedule the restart
Changing these convars takes effect after a full server restart. Plan the edit for a maintenance window, warn connected players and stop the server cleanly if your host provides a stop command. Reloading a resource, restarting a resource, or reconnecting your own client does not reload the server convars.
Use plain text and straight quotation marks
Save the file as ordinary text. Type the normal keyboard quote character (") around each value. Curly or “smart” quotation marks are reported by forum users to break parsing, so do not paste typographic quotes from a word processor. Keep each declaration on one line while troubleshooting.
Step-by-step: change the name and description
- Open the active file. Use an editor that shows plain text and preserves the file’s existing encoding. Do not edit a similarly named example file or a backup.
- Search for existing declarations. Look for
sv_hostname,sv_projectNameandsv_projectDesc. Replace the existing line rather than adding a second competing value. If a setting appears more than once, leave one authoritative declaration and remove or comment out the duplicate. - Enter all three values. A practical pattern is shown below. Replace the example text with your own values.

sets sv_projectDesc "A serious roleplay community with custom jobs and vehicles."- Check the syntax. The first line has no
setsprefix. The two project lines do. Every value is enclosed in matching straight quotes, and there is no accidental line break inside a value. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor did not append a second extension such as
.txtand that you saved the file used by the running instance. - Restart the entire FiveM server. Stop and start the server process, or use the host’s full restart action. A resource restart alone cannot apply these server-level variables.
- Verify from the public listing. Search for the server after it has finished starting. Allow the listing to refresh, then compare the visible name and project information with the values in the file.
How to write values that work well in the listing
Keep the hostname recognizable
Put the distinctive community name first, followed by information that helps a player choose the server: language, region, roleplay type or a broad status such as “whitelisted.” Avoid filling the line with slogans, repeated punctuation and long recruitment text. A name that is easy to scan is more useful than one that attempts to explain every feature.
For example, North County RP | Serious Roleplay | EN tells a prospective player more efficiently than a long sentence containing every job, vehicle pack and rule. Put the fuller explanation in sv_projectDesc or your external community documentation.

Make the project name stable
sv_projectName should be the durable identity of the community, not a temporary event message. If you change the event, season or queue status every day, players may have difficulty recognizing the server. Use the hostname for a short qualifier when necessary, while keeping the project name consistent.
Write the description as one short sentence
The Cfx.re documentation describes sv_projectDesc as a short description written as a sentence. Explain the server’s core experience and its most important differentiator. For example: “A serious roleplay community with custom jobs, player-owned businesses and moderated events.” Do not treat the field as a paragraph, rules page or changelog.

No authoritative current character limit was confirmed. Third-party guides differ between approximately one line and one or two sentences, so keep the value brief rather than relying on an unverified numeric limit. If a sentence is cut off in the client, shorten it instead of adding more formatting.
Using colour codes in sv_hostname
A third-party listing guide from xGamingServer documents colour codes such as ^1 through ^9 in sv_hostname. The example uses ^4 for a coloured prefix and ^7 to return to the default colour:
sv_hostname "^4[EN] ^7My City RP"Use colour sparingly. A plain hostname is easier to search, and client surfaces may not render every colour identically. Test the result in the current server list after a restart. Do not place colour sequences in sv_projectName or sv_projectDesc unless the current client and documentation explicitly support them there.

Restarting correctly
Self-managed server
- Announce the maintenance window and save any scheduled changes.
- Stop the full FXServer process through your service manager, console script or operating-system service.
- Confirm that the old process has exited before starting it again; otherwise you may be looking at the still-running instance.
- Start the server with the same startup command that loads the edited configuration.
- Wait until startup completes and the server registers, then inspect the public listing.
Hosted server
Use the provider’s Stop and Start or Restart server controls rather than a button that only restarts resources. Some managed panels generate or overwrite server.cfg. A Cfx forum reply reports that panel settings can override file values, so check the panel’s variables or startup configuration before assuming the file is authoritative.

Where players may see each value
The project name and description are intended to provide listing metadata, while sv_hostname identifies the server itself. Community reports disagree about the exact current placement: some say the project fields appear in the server list and the hostname is used for direct connect, while third-party guides place the description on an expanded listing or a connecting screen. Because these surfaces can change with the FiveM client, verify the result in the client version your players use instead of promising one fixed location.
The reliable test is comparative: record the three values in your file, restart the server, open the listing, expand the entry if the client offers that control, and check the connection screen as well. Capture a screenshot for your moderators if the community needs a reference, but do not infer a missing value until the server has completed a full restart.
Diagnosing an old name or missing description
The old name remains everywhere
- Restart was incomplete: verify that the actual server process stopped and started. A resource restart does not apply these convars.
- Wrong file was edited: compare the startup command with the path of the file you changed. Multi-server machines commonly have one configuration per instance.
- Duplicate declarations exist: search every included configuration file for the three variable names. Remove conflicting lines so there is one intentional value.
- A panel rewrites the file: inspect the managed host’s server variables, templates and startup settings. Apply the value in the panel if it owns the generated configuration.
The project fields are absent or the server does not list correctly
Add both project declarations exactly once and include the sets prefix. The Cfx.re support page warns that missing sv_projectName or sv_projectDesc can cause a startup error or an incorrect listing entry. Read the startup console for a parsing error, correct the file, and perform another full restart.

The server starts but the value is cut off
Shorten the hostname or description. No confirmed official character limit is available, and third-party estimates conflict. Remove decorative symbols and long invitations first, then test again. A concise project name plus a single-sentence description is the safest format.
A false hostname-rework warning appears
A Cfx.re bug report documents a false “hostname rework” notice on Windows artifacts b31623 and b31689 even when the project variables were set correctly: Cfx.re forum bug report. Treat that report as version-specific evidence, not as proof that your syntax is wrong. Confirm the actual listing values and compare the artifact version used by your server before changing working configuration.
The file contains strange quotation marks
Replace curly quotes with straight ASCII quotes, save as plain text and restart. This parsing problem is reported by community users rather than established in the official documentation, so first reproduce it with the smallest valid three-line example and check the startup console.

Wasabi Hosting’s FiveM server.cfg guide shows the same sets sv_projectName and sets sv_projectDesc form used in a normal configuration file: Wasabi Hosting server.cfg documentation. A host’s interface can add its own workflow, but it does not change the convar names.
Managing several servers or environments
If you run development, staging and production instances, give each instance a distinct project name or hostname while testing. Keep the three declarations together in each environment’s configuration so a deployment cannot update one value and leave another behind. Before promoting a change, verify which startup command and file belong to production.
When configuration is generated from a template, store the name and description as explicit variables in that template. Render the file, inspect the rendered three lines, and restart only the intended instance. This prevents a staging label from appearing on the public server or a production description from being copied into a test listing.
Safe formatting and maintenance practices
- Use ordinary straight quotes and balanced quotation marks.
- Keep each convar on its own line and avoid inline comments until the value works.
- Do not put passwords, API keys or other secrets in a public hostname or description.
- Use normal spaces and punctuation; test unusual Unicode symbols on the actual client before adopting them.
- Keep a dated backup so you can restore a known-good configuration.
- Document who owns the authoritative value when both a panel and a file are present.
These fields are public-facing metadata. A description should tell players what the server offers, not expose internal hostnames, private staff contacts or operational details. Put rules, application instructions and long feature lists on the community’s normal information pages instead.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the full server process.
- Restore the last known-good
server.cfgor remove only the three newly changed declarations. - Check that the restored file has one valid declaration for each setting and uses straight quotes.
- Start the server with the intended configuration path.
- Confirm startup completes, then verify the public listing before making another edit.
If the old values return immediately after rollback, a generated panel file, deployment script or alternate configuration is probably the source. Identify that source first; repeatedly editing a derived file will not provide a lasting fix.

Those discussions are useful for diagnosing installations, but the live Cfx.re documentation and the client you operate should take precedence when labels or display surfaces change.
