What controls the ACC server name?
ACC reads the server’s public name from the serverName key in the server’s settings.json file. The setting belongs to the server configuration folder used by your dedicated-server installation. The exact folder varies with how you installed or host ACC, so locate the settings.json that belongs to the instance you actually run rather than creating a second file elsewhere.

Editing a name-like value there will not rename the server. If several ACC instances exist on the same machine, confirm that you are changing the file attached to the instance whose name appears in the server list.
Choose the right way to rename the server

A hosted panel may hide the underlying JSON. In that case, use its Server Name field rather than downloading, editing and re-uploading an unknown file. The labels and restart controls differ by provider, and no single panel sequence can be assumed for every host.

Rename a self-run ACC server by editing settings.json
1. Stop or pause changes before editing
Make sure you know which ACC instance you intend to rename. If the server is actively writing its configuration, stop it first when your setup allows that, or schedule the edit during a maintenance window. Stopping first is a safety measure to prevent a running process from overwriting your change; it is not documented as a universal requirement for the name setting.
2. Back up the existing file
Copy settings.json to a separate backup location before opening it. Keep the original filename and encoding in the backup. If the server later fails to load the file, restoring the backup is faster than reconstructing every setting.
3. Open the correct settings.json
Open the settings.json located in the ACC server configuration folder. Do not edit a similarly named example, template or file belonging to another instance. If you start ACC with a launcher, service definition or script, use that setup to identify the configuration directory it passes to the server.
4. Change only serverName
Find the existing serverName entry and replace only its text value. Keep the key spelling, quotation marks, comma placement and surrounding JSON structure intact. For example:

}The value in this example is illustrative. Use the name you want players to see. Avoid changing unrelated settings in the same edit, because a typo elsewhere can prevent the configuration from loading even when the new name is correct.
5. Preserve valid JSON syntax
JSON requires double quotation marks around the key and string value. A comma is required between properties but not after the final property in a JSON object. Do not add comments, trailing commas or smart quotation marks. If the original file contains many properties, leave their order and values unchanged unless you have another reason to edit them.

The ACC Server Admin Handbook specifies JSON configuration in UTF-16LE format. Use an editor whose encoding menu explicitly offers UTF-16LE (sometimes displayed as “UTF-16 Little Endian”). Saving the file as ordinary UTF-8 can cause ACC to ignore the edit according to a hosting guide, so check the encoding deliberately rather than relying on the editor’s default.
After saving, reopen the file or inspect the editor’s status bar to verify that it is still UTF-16LE. Do not use a word processor that may add formatting or alter the JSON structure. Preserve the .json extension; a file silently renamed to settings.json.txt will not be read as the intended configuration.

7. Apply the file and restart as a precaution
Close the editor, then start the ACC dedicated server again if you stopped it. A restart is a practical way to ensure the process reads the saved file, but the available documentation does not establish that a restart is mandatory in every ACC build. If your service manager or host has a separate restart or apply button, use that control after saving.
Rename an ACC server through a hosting control panel
When a provider does not expose the filesystem, the panel may present a field labelled Server Name, Name, Hostname or a similar term. The following workflow is intentionally generic because panel labels and application behavior vary.
- Sign in to the control panel for the specific ACC instance.
- Open the server’s configuration, settings or startup page.
- Locate the field that represents the public server name. Do not change a network address, port, query port or other connection field.
- Enter the new name and use the panel’s Save, Apply or Update action.
- If the panel reports that a restart is needed, restart through the panel. If it does not, restart anyway when practical so the dedicated server rereads its configuration.
- Check the server listing from a fresh client session to confirm the new name.
If the panel has both a name field and a file manager, prefer the documented name field. A panel can regenerate configuration files, so a manual edit may be replaced the next time the service is started or synchronized. If no name field exists, ask the host which setting maps to serverName and whether customers are allowed to edit the file directly.
Why editing configuration.json does not work
ACC separates general server settings from network settings. The server name is in settings.json; configuration.json handles network configuration. Changing a value in the latter therefore leaves the displayed name unchanged. This is the most common wrong-file error when both files are visible in the same directory.

Troubleshoot a name that will not change
The old name still appears immediately
- Confirm that the edited file is the active instance’s
settings.json, not a backup, template or second installation. - Check that the key is exactly
serverNameand that the new value is inside its quotation marks. - Verify the file was saved as UTF-16LE, not the editor’s default UTF-8.
- Restart the dedicated server or use the host’s Apply/Restart control, then reconnect from a fresh client session.
The server fails to start after the edit
- Restore the backup copy first so the service can return to its last known-good configuration.
- Compare the edited file for missing quotation marks, an accidental trailing comma, smart quotes or comments.
- Check that the filename remains
settings.jsonand that the file was not saved with an extra extension. - Reapply only the name change with a UTF-16LE-capable editor, leaving unrelated properties untouched.
The panel keeps reverting the name
This usually indicates that the panel is the authoritative configuration layer or that a managed service regenerates JSON. Use the panel’s own Server Name field, save through its normal workflow and follow any required restart instruction. If the field is absent, the host must confirm whether direct file edits are supported for your plan.

The new name appears in one place but not another
First verify the dedicated server process itself has loaded the new file. Then refresh the client’s server list or reconnect. A stale listing does not prove that the JSON edit failed, but the available documentation does not define a universal refresh interval or caching rule, so treat a fresh connection as the reliable check.
Validation checklist
- The edited file is the active instance’s
settings.json. - The public name is assigned to
serverName. configuration.jsonwas not used for the rename.- The new value uses normal JSON double quotes and contains no comments or trailing comma.
- The file remains named
settings.json. - The file was saved in UTF-16LE.
- A backup of the previous file is available.
- The service was applied or restarted after saving.
- A fresh client connection shows the intended name.
Version and documentation limits
The ACC Server Admin Handbook editions referenced for this procedure are 1.6.0 and 1.9.3. Hosting guidance also identifies UTF-16LE as important, but one such warning is based on a single low-confidence source. No retrieved source dated 2026 confirms whether newer ACC builds changed the key name, file format or reload behavior. Before making a production change, check the current ACC Server Admin Handbook from the game’s developer and compare it with your installed server build.
The documentation also does not establish that a restart is strictly required, nor does it provide a universal sequence for every hosted control panel. Those details are why the safest procedure is to preserve a backup, make the smallest possible edit, save in the documented encoding and use the hosting system’s own apply or restart controls when available.
Does changing the name affect network settings?
No network value needs to be changed for this rename. Leave ports, addresses, query settings and other connection fields in configuration.json alone unless you are performing a separate network change. Keeping the two tasks separate makes it easier to identify the cause if a later connection problem occurs.

The configuration value is a JSON string, so spaces can be included inside the quoted serverName value. Keep the value enclosed in ordinary double quotation marks and avoid altering the surrounding syntax. If your hosting panel imposes its own length or character rules, follow the panel’s validation message because those rules are provider-specific.
Is a purchase required?
No hardware, accessory or software purchase is needed for the rename itself. You need access to the server configuration or to a hosting panel that exposes the name setting, plus an editor capable of saving UTF-16LE when you edit the raw file.
