Apple describes changing the password on a trusted device as its easiest and most secure method. Apple’s password instructions apply to the current account name.
Change your current password on your iPhone
Use this procedure when you know your current password and can unlock an iPhone already signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Apple calls a device in that state a trusted device; it can verify important account changes. The exact labels can vary with iOS updates, so follow the wording shown on your iPhone.

If your iPhone asks whether to keep other devices signed in, choose what you prefer. Removing other devices means you will need to sign in again on them.

Apple’s guide to changing an Apple Account password describes this trusted-device route. A trusted device can also be an iPad, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, or Mac already signed in with two-factor authentication; it is not simply any device you own. Apple explains trusted devices and numbers.
Reset a forgotten password
If you cannot remember the password, use the same iPhone menu to reset it: Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password. Enter the iPhone passcode if prompted, then follow the reset instructions. This is different from changing a known password because you cannot supply the old one.

If you cannot use your trusted iPhone
Apple documents several alternatives: use another trusted Apple device, use a borrowed Apple device with the Apple Support app, or start the reset on the web. The web route may take longer; Apple recommends using a trusted device if one will be available soon. See Apple’s password-reset options for the applicable route.

What to do if a security delay appears
Your iPhone may require a one-hour wait before allowing a password or another critical account change. Apple identifies Stolen Device Protection as an additional safeguard, including when the phone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. Follow the instructions and timing displayed on the iPhone; do not assume the delay can be skipped. See Apple’s Stolen Device Protection guidance and its password-change instructions.

If you think someone else has access to your account
Change the password to a strong, unique one, then review the account information and devices associated with it. Remove devices you do not recognize and check that you still control the email addresses and phone numbers on the account. Apple’s account-security guidance covers these steps. Do not share your password, verification codes, or recovery key with anyone.

Account recovery
When Apple cannot verify your identity through the ordinary options, you may need account recovery. Apple says this can take several days or longer, depending on the information available to confirm that the account is yours. Contacting Apple Support cannot shorten the waiting period. Follow the status and instructions Apple provides during recovery. Apple’s account-recovery guidance explains the process.

Recovery contact
If you previously set up a recovery contact, that person can provide a code to help you reset the password. A recovery contact does not get access to your account. Apple explains the role in its recovery-contact instructions.
Recovery key
A recovery key is an optional, advanced recovery method—not a requirement for an ordinary password change. Apple describes it as a 28-character code. Turning it on disables Apple’s standard account-recovery process, so you must keep the key somewhere safe; losing it may leave you permanently unable to access the account. Review Apple’s recovery-key guidance before enabling it.
