In Word, a black page is almost always one of two things: Dark Mode’s display, or a page color saved in the document. If it’s Dark Mode, go to View > Switch Modes in desktop Word, or View > Switch Backgrounds in Word for the web. If the document has a saved fill, go to Design > Page Color and choose white or No Color. Work out which one you have first, because the fixes are different.
Which “background” are you looking at?
Word has four settings that can all produce a dark-looking page. Each lives in a different place.

Per Microsoft’s Dark Mode in Word page, desktop Dark Mode requires the Office Black theme. The theme and the page color are related but separate settings.
Fix it in Word for Windows or Mac
If Dark Mode is making the page black
- Open the document and select View.
- Select Switch Modes. The page changes to light while the rest of the app stays dark. Word remembers the switch state for future Dark Mode sessions.
If you don’t see Switch Modes, check that Dark Mode is actually active. The button appears only then.

Keep Dark Mode but always show a white page
- Windows: File > Options > General > Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, then select Never change the document page color.
- Mac: Word > Preferences > General > Personalize, then select Dark Mode has a white page color.
This keeps the Black theme while stopping Word from recoloring the page, as described in Microsoft’s guide to changing the look and feel of Microsoft 365.
Turn Dark Mode off entirely
Set the Office theme to something other than Black at File > Account > Office Theme. Choosing Use system setting makes Word follow your Windows theme, so it will go dark again whenever Windows does.

If the document has a saved page color
- Select Design > Page Color. In some interface variants it is under Layout.
- Choose a light color, or select No Color to remove the fill.

Fix it in Word for the web
- Word for the web may turn on Dark Mode automatically if your operating system or browser uses it. You can also toggle it at View > Dark Mode.
- Select View > Switch Backgrounds to show the light page.
The choice is remembered per browser, provided cookies are enabled. Microsoft notes that Dark Mode settings do not carry between web, Windows and Mac, so set the preference on each platform you use.

If only a line or paragraph is dark
A dark band behind some text is shading, not Page Color. Select the text and open Home > Paragraph > Shading, then pick a light color or no fill. Microsoft’s shading page says shading is different from highlighting and can update with theme changes.

Microsoft states: “The dark page background does not convey how your document will print, or the default view your collaborators will see when they open it.” Your Dark Mode choice does not change what others see or what comes out of the printer. To preview the printed look, switch the page to light.

- Windows: File > Options > Display > Printing Options
- Mac: Word > Preferences > Output and Sharing > Print > Print Options
Known Dark Mode quirks
- Some side panes and dialog boxes, charts, text boxes, equations and ink may not map fully to Dark Mode, so they can look wrong against a dark or light page.
- Text copied from another app while in Dark Mode can arrive as black text on a white background. Microsoft suggests pasting as text only.
