7 Drawbacks of Buying an iPhone (and Who They Actually Affect)

An iPhone is a good phone for many people, but it comes with real trade-offs: a high entry price, carrier lock-in on financing, expensive accidental-damage repairs, an optional protection plan that may not pay off, a battery that wears out, repair-parts rules that affect resale, and extra homework if you buy cheaper or refurbished. These are potential drawbacks, not defects every owner will meet. Prices, models, carrier terms and repair options vary by model, country and date, so use this as a checklist to test against the exact phone and offer in front of you. The seven are not ranked by how often they occur; no independent figure for that was available.

The seven drawbacks at a glance

# Drawback Most affects
1 High purchase price Budget-focused buyers
2 Financing can tie you to a carrier Anyone who may switch carriers
3 Accidental damage repairs are costly Drop-prone users, caseless users
4 Protection plans add cost and may not pay off Low-risk users; people who already use a case
5 Battery wear and replacement planning Keepers who plan to hold the phone for years
6 Parts and repair history complicate repair and resale Buyers of used phones; people using third-party repair
7 Cheaper or refurbished models need extra checking Bargain hunters

1. The purchase price can be high

Consumer Reports’ 2026 smartphone buying guide says top-rated premium smartphones can cost $1,000 or more, while capable phones are available for under $600. That is market-wide context, not a quote for any particular iPhone. Apple’s price depends on the model and storage tier, and storage upgrades raise it further, so compare like-for-like: the same storage, and the same generation of feature you actually want.

The practical question is whether you will use what the premium buys, such as better cameras, larger screens or higher-end chips. If you mostly message, browse and stream, a cheaper phone may meet your needs.

2. Financing can tie you to a carrier

Carrier installment plans lower the upfront cost, but Consumer Reports notes that buyers who get a high-end phone through a carrier generally must stay until it is paid off, or pay the remaining balance before closing the account. Promotional credits often follow similar logic, though terms differ by offer and carrier.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Before signing, compare the total cost, not the monthly payment: the phone price, any bill credits and what you forfeit if you leave early. Buying unlocked costs more at the start but keeps your options open.

3. Accidental damage can mean large repair bills

Apple’s one-year limited warranty covers hardware faults, not damage you cause. Consumer Reports’ September 10, 2026 article gives model-specific examples of out-of-warranty charges for screen, back-glass and camera repairs. They vary widely by model, and they are examples, not prices for every iPhone or location. Look up the repair price for your model in your country before you buy.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.

Apple has reported improvements in durability: a 38% decrease in out-of-warranty repair rates from 2015 to 2022, and a 75% decrease in liquid-damage repairs after liquid-ingress protection arrived with iPhone 7 (Apple’s 2024 report). These are Apple’s own figures, not independent comparisons, and they do not predict your personal risk. They also mean fewer problems, not cheaper ones when something does break.

If you are prone to drops, a model-compatible case is a low-cost way to reduce exposure. It is optional and does not guarantee protection.

4. Protection plans add cost and may not pay off

AppleCare+ has its own price, deductibles and restrictions, which vary by model and region. Consumer Reports says whether it is worth buying depends on the phone’s cost and your tolerance for risk. The calculation changes if you use a case and rarely drop phones, or if you could comfortably absorb a repair bill.

To decide, compare three numbers for your exact model: the plan’s total cost, the deductible per claim, and the out-of-pocket repair price without coverage. Note that accidental-damage coverage is a different thing from the limited warranty.

5. The battery wears out, and replacement takes planning

Apple’s support documentation (published July 20, 2026) states: “All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited lifespan – eventually their capacity and performance decline and they need to be replaced.” This applies to every smartphone, but it matters most if you intend to keep an expensive phone for many years.

Apple describes replacement through service providers and, for eligible products, self-service repair. Self-service depends on country or region and model and is intended for experienced repairers. Expect to be without the phone for some time or to schedule an appointment, and check the battery-replacement price for your model.

6. Parts and repair history can complicate repair and resale

Apple says used and third-party parts may perform differently and are outside Apple’s product warranty and AppleCare coverage. iPhones also record repair information in Parts and Service History, and certain components require Repair Assistant or other steps after replacement.

Apple describes parts pairing as a way “to make access to repair easier and more transparent to customers while also ensuring that every device — and the data stored on it — remains secure and performs optimally” (Apple, June 2024). That is Apple’s explanation, not an independent assessment. Apple’s support page indicates it does not actively disable every third-party part, with exceptions tied to customer security and privacy. In practice, independent repair is possible but less predictable than with a standard repair route, and a visible repair history can influence what a secondhand buyer thinks the phone is worth.

If you buy used, open the phone’s Parts and Service History and check for replaced components.

7. Cheaper or refurbished models need extra checking

Choosing a lower-cost or older iPhone, or a refurbished one, cuts the upfront cost but adds trade-offs: missing features, a shorter remaining software-support window, limited stock, and part or battery history.

  • Software support: Consumer Reports says iOS 26 supports iPhones back to the iPhone 11. That is the current situation, not a promise about how long a new purchase will be supported.
  • Refurbished checks: Consumer Reports advises checking the seller’s inspection process, whether the battery was replaced, which accessories are included, and what parts were used, plus the warranty.
  • Availability: Apple-refurbished stock is not available for every model or region at all times.

How to weigh these before buying

  1. Pick the exact model and storage, and compare its price with a capable sub-$600 alternative.
  2. Compare unlocked and carrier-financed totals, including the cost of leaving early.
  3. Look up your model’s screen, back-glass, camera and battery repair prices locally.
  4. Decide on a protection plan by comparing its cost plus deductible with the repair exposure you would otherwise carry, and whether you will use a case.
  5. If buying used or refurbished, check the battery, Parts and Service History, accessories and warranty.

The drawbacks hit hardest if you are cost-sensitive, drop phones often, or plan to switch carriers. If you can pay upfront, protect the phone and keep it on a standard repair route, most of them shrink considerably.
