How to Change Where On-Screen Indicators Appear in Windows 11

To move Windows 11’s hardware-control pop-ups, go to Settings > System > Notifications, find Position of the onscreen pop-up, and choose a position from the dropdown. The setting moves indicators for brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktops; Microsoft described its availability as a gradual rollout.

Move the on-screen indicator

1. Open Settings.

2. Select System > Notifications.

3. Find Position of the onscreen pop-up and select the placement you want from its dropdown.

Which pop-ups does the setting move?

It changes the placement of hardware indicators for brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktops. It does not reposition every notification Windows displays.

If the position option is missing

Microsoft described the feature as a gradual rollout, so it may not appear on every PC at the same time. Confirm Windows is updated, then check Settings > System > Notifications again as the rollout reaches your device. Microsoft’s update note does not establish that a particular update or device action will make the control appear immediately.

Related settings that do something different

• App notification banners: Windows treats app banners and Notification Center as notification controls, separate from the hardware-indicator position setting. See Microsoft’s guide to Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.

• Brightness level: To make the screen brighter or dimmer, use Quick Settings or Settings > System > Display. Moving the indicator does not alter brightness; an external display may have its own brightness controls. See Change display brightness and color in Windows.
