How to Adjust Game Clip Video Quality in Windows 11

Adjust Xbox Game Bar capture preferences in Windows 11, find your MP4 clips, and distinguish recording quality from game rendering resolution.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To adjust Xbox Game Bar recording options in Windows 11, open Settings > Gaming > Captures. The controls available on that page can vary by Windows build and device, so check your own Captures settings for quality or frame-rate choices. A selected frame rate is a preference, not a guarantee that every clip will sustain it.

Change capture options in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Gaming > Captures. This is the Windows settings page for capture preferences and saved recordings. Microsoft’s Gaming settings guidance describes the Captures area.

  2. Inspect the controls on that page. If your Windows build offers video-quality or frame-rate choices, select the option that suits your needs. Labels and available choices can differ by build and device; Microsoft’s current help material does not establish a universal set of quality levels, frame rates, or output-resolution controls.

  3. Start a test recording and review the result. Consider both motion smoothness and visual detail, along with available disk space and your PC’s performance headroom. The setting alone does not guarantee a particular finished-clip frame rate or performance impact.

Record and find a game clip

Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar. Press Win+Alt+R to start or stop a recording. Microsoft’s screen-reader guide to recording with Xbox Game Bar describes these shortcuts and says recordings are MP4 files saved in VideosCaptures.

Capture quality is not the same as game resolution

Game Bar’s capture preferences affect the recording workflow; they are not a way to choose any arbitrary output resolution or bitrate. The game’s rendering resolution and graphics settings are separate. For those settings, Windows provides Settings > System > Display > Graphics; some graphics changes require restarting the game. See Microsoft’s guidance on graphics preferences and windowed-game optimizations.

Display processing can also differ from what a capture tool records. Microsoft notes that Game Bar and other capture tools generally capture a window’s contents, which may not include an upscaled image as it appears on screen. Auto SR is a separate feature with device, Windows, game, and resolution requirements—not a Game Bar recording-quality preset. Check Microsoft’s Auto SR documentation for its requirements.

Can Game Bar record at 60 fps or a different resolution?

Whether a frame-rate choice is available depends on the controls shown on your Windows 11 device. The official material cited here does not confirm a universal 60-fps option or a custom-resolution setting for Game Bar. A Microsoft Community post reports Standard and High quality choices without a custom-resolution control, but that is user-reported information rather than a definitive specification for every build: Microsoft Community discussion.

If the finished video looks less smooth or detailed than expected, review the available capture controls and test a short clip; do not treat a chosen target frame rate as proof that the recording maintained it.
