Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If pressing your PC’s power button puts it to sleep when you would rather shut it down, you can change its action in Windows 11’s Power Options. Choose a separate action for battery and plugged-in use on a laptop when those controls are available.
Change the power button action in Windows 11
- Search Windows for Control Panel and open it.
- Select System and Security, then Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- If the action controls are unavailable, select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Under When I press the power button, choose the action you want. On a laptop, set the On battery and Plugged in columns independently if you prefer.
- Select Save changes.
These are Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 steps. Some PCs may show different options; the available actions depend on the computer. Microsoft also documents an alternate route through Settings > System > Power & battery > Additional power settings on applicable layouts. See Microsoft’s instructions for power-button actions.

Choose between Sleep, hibernation, and shutdown
| Action | Power use and return | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Uses very little power and resumes faster, according to Microsoft Support. | A short break when you want to get back to your work quickly. |
| Hibernate | Uses less power than Sleep, but resumes more slowly. | A longer period away, especially when you are away from a charger. It may not be available on every PC. |
| Shut down | Turns the PC off completely. | When you want the computer off rather than in a low-power state. |
Microsoft’s description of Sleep is qualitative; it does not give a universal power-use or resume-time figure. Some PCs, including some systems with InstantGo, do not offer hibernation. Where hibernation is supported, it may need to be enabled in Power Options before it appears. Microsoft explains Sleep and hibernation.
If you only want to turn off the screen or change automatic sleep
The power-button setting controls what happens when you press the physical button. It is separate from the timers for turning off the display or putting the PC to sleep. To adjust those timers, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide covers those controls.
