How to Change Waze Route Preferences to Avoid Tolls, Highways, and Ferries

Turn on Waze’s separate toll, ferry, and freeway avoidance preferences in Navigation settings, or adjust route choices while planning a drive.

To keep Waze from routing you onto toll roads, ferries, or freeways, open Menu > Settings > Navigation and enable the options you want. You can also set toll and ferry preferences while planning a particular drive. These are preferences, not guarantees: Waze may still use a road type you selected to avoid if no suitable alternative is available.

Change Waze preferences for future drives

  1. Open Waze and tap the menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings, then Navigation.
  3. Turn on any preferences you want: Avoid toll roads, Avoid ferries, and Avoid freeways.

Each option is separate, so you can avoid one road type without avoiding the others. To change your choice later, return to the same Navigation settings and turn the option off.

Set preferences while planning a specific drive

  1. Search for your destination and select it. If you are choosing a new destination, tap View routes.
  2. On the route-planning screen, tap Avoid and enable toll and/or ferry avoidance.
  3. To avoid freeways in this flow, tap View all navigation settings and turn on Avoid freeways.

Waze says changes made to settings for upcoming drives apply to future drives. The exact labels and layout can differ between interfaces.

How do I avoid tolls in Waze?

Enable Avoid toll roads in Menu > Settings > Navigation, or use Avoid while planning a route. When toll avoidance is on, Waze says the first route option should be toll-free unless a toll road is the only route available. If a selected route includes a toll road, Waze displays an icon with the toll amount.

Displayed toll prices are estimates based on community-added information, the route, and your settings; they are not a substitute for prices from the toll operator. Waze does not calculate prices for congestion-based toll roads where the price varies with traffic or the number of uses per day. See Waze’s explanation of toll prices.

How do I keep Waze off highways?

In the general Navigation settings, turn on Avoid freeways. When planning a drive, Waze’s documented route flow places this option under View all navigation settings, rather than alongside the toll and ferry choices in Avoid.

Use Waze avoidance settings in the car

  • Android Auto: Open Waze settings, tap Navigation, and turn on the preferences you want. Waze also documents changing preferences from the alternate-routes screen.
  • Android Automotive: Waze documents the same Navigation settings path and an alternate-routes settings path.
  • CarPlay: On the route screen, tap Avoid and choose Avoid highways, Avoid tolls, or Avoid ferries. Tap a selected option again to turn it off. If you planned the drive before starting navigation, search for the destination, tap Go now if you are ready to navigate, then tap Avoid and choose your options.

For platform-specific directions, see Waze’s avoid toll roads, ferries, and freeways instructions and its CarPlay instructions.

Why Waze may still use an avoided road

Avoidance settings tell Waze what you prefer; they do not guarantee that every route will exclude that road type. Waze says it may still suggest routes with toll roads, freeways, or ferries depending on which routes are available when you drive. If every available route uses one of them, check the route details before starting and decide whether to accept the available option or choose another way to travel.

When another app changes your preferences

A connected third-party service, such as a rideshare app, may override your toll, ferry, or freeway preferences while you navigate through that service. Waze says the settings return to normal when the ride ends and that the app may display a notice when an override occurs. Waze explains how third-party app integrations can affect settings.
