In Vintage Story, map size is the generated world’s horizontal extent. Width runs along the X axis and length runs along the Z axis; both values are measured in blocks. Height is the Y dimension. These are world-generation settings, not a setting for the in-game map window, view distance or how much terrain a client keeps loaded around a player.
| Setting | Meaning | Default | Where you set it |
|---|---|---|---|
MapSizeX |
World width on the X axis | 1,024,000 blocks | serverconfig.json before first generation |
MapSizeY |
World height on the Y axis | 256 blocks | serverconfig.json before first generation |
MapSizeZ |
World length on the Z axis | 1,024,000 blocks | serverconfig.json before first generation |
worldWidth |
Creation-stage command for X width | Not a separate default; uses the world default unless changed | /worldconfig during world creation |
worldLength |
Creation-stage command for Z length | Not a separate default; uses the world default unless changed | /worldconfig during world creation |
The 1,024,000-block width and length defaults are listed by the Vintage Story Wiki in its page verification for Vintage Story 1.21.6. The 256-block height is listed in the wiki’s serverconfig.json defaults with page verification for Vintage Story 1.20.0. Check the documentation matching your server version if another release changes a default.

Why an existing world cannot simply be resized
Vintage Story’s documented world-configuration rules make world size a creation-stage property. The official wording groups “world climate, world size and polar-equator distance” among settings that can only be set during world creation. The server-configuration documentation likewise says that values in serverconfig.json work only before a world has been created.
As a result, editing MapSizeX or running /worldconfig after a save already exists should not be expected to expand or shrink that save. The reliable workflow is to preserve the old save, configure the desired dimensions, generate a new save and then decide whether to keep both worlds.

Stop the server cleanly
Stop the server through its normal console command or hosting-panel control. Do not edit a live configuration file while the process is writing to the save. Wait until the panel reports that the process has exited before opening files or changing startup settings.
Back up the original save
Copy the complete existing save directory to storage outside the active server folder. Give the backup a descriptive name that includes the world name and date. A backup is important even when you intend to keep the old world, because changing the startup path or creating a new save can expose an incorrect directory to later maintenance.
- Keep the original save unchanged until the new world has started successfully.
- Record the current save path, server version and any important mods or world-specific settings.
- Verify that the backup contains the save’s files and is readable before proceeding.
Decide whether you are creating a test or permanent world
Use a distinct save name or path for the first launch with new dimensions. This prevents a failed generation attempt from overwriting the established world and makes it possible to switch back by restoring the original path.

Method 1: Set the size in a managed-host panel
Managed hosts commonly expose world-creation fields in a configuration tab, startup form or file manager. Labels vary, so look for fields named map width, map length, world width, world length, X size or Z size. The panel is only a different interface for the same creation-stage values.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Stop the server and create the backup described above.
- Open the host’s world-creation or server-configuration area. If the host provides a file manager, locate the server configuration file, commonly under a
datadirectory. - Map the panel’s width field to
MapSizeXand its length field toMapSizeZ. Do not confuse length with height; height corresponds toMapSizeY. - Enter whole-number block values without commas or unit suffixes. For example, enter
200000, not200,000 blocks. - Choose a new save name or path if the panel supports it. Confirm that the next startup will use that path rather than the established save.
- Save the panel changes, create or initialize the new world and start the server.
- Leave the original save untouched until you have confirmed that the new world has the expected dimensions.
Some panels save values only when a “create world,” “generate” or equivalent action is submitted. Others write the configuration immediately but apply it only on the next new-world initialization. Read the panel’s status messages and check the resulting configuration instead of assuming that changing a text field regenerated the world.
Method 2: Edit serverconfig.json before generation
Direct file access gives you the clearest control when you run the server yourself or the host provides a file manager. The relevant keys are MapSizeX, MapSizeY and MapSizeZ. A minimal example of the values you might set is:
{"MapSizeX": 200000, "MapSizeY": 256, "MapSizeZ": 200000}
This is an example of the three relevant values, not a replacement for the entire configuration. Edit the existing keys in your complete file and leave unrelated settings intact. If your file already contains additional commas, comments supported by your server version or other properties, preserve the syntax that the server expects.
- Stop the server.
- Back up the save and make a copy of the current
serverconfig.json. - Open the configuration file in a plain-text editor. On hosts that document this layout, the file is located at
data/serverconfig.json; self-hosted installations can use a different root, so confirm the path used by your startup command. - Change
MapSizeXfor width andMapSizeZfor length. ChangeMapSizeYonly if you have a specific reason to alter the vertical dimension. - Use integer values in blocks. Keep the key spelling and capitalization exactly as shown.
- Save the file and validate that it remains valid JSON according to your editor or host panel.
- Point the server at a new save location, or use the host’s new-world action, then start the server to generate the world.
Editing the file after the save already exists does not resize that save. If you are unsure whether generation has happened, treat the save as existing and create a separate path rather than testing changes against the original.

Method 3: Use the creation-stage /worldconfig commands
The official command forms are:
/worldconfig worldWidth 200000
/worldconfig worldLength 200000
Replace 200000 with the number of blocks you want. The square brackets often shown in documentation indicate a placeholder; do not type the brackets themselves. The command names are case-sensitive: use worldWidth and worldLength, including the capital W and L.
- Stop or restart into the server’s world-creation stage, depending on how your installation presents initial setup.
- Open the server console or an administrator chat session with permission to run world-configuration commands.
- Run
/worldconfig worldWidth <number>with your chosen width. - Run
/worldconfig worldLength <number>with your chosen length. - Confirm the server accepts both commands before allowing the new save to generate.
- Finish world creation and start the server using the new save path.
These commands are not a documented in-place resizing tool. If the server has already generated the world, create a new save and apply the commands during that save’s creation instead.
Choosing dimensions in blocks
Pick dimensions according to the playable area you actually need. A value applies to one horizontal side, so a square world set to 200000 has 200,000 blocks across and 200,000 blocks along the other horizontal axis. The horizontal area is the product of width and length; doubling both sides multiplies that area by four. That arithmetic describes the size of the generated coordinate space, not a guaranteed memory, disk or CPU requirement.
| Use case | Example width | Example length | What the example means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small test or private experiment | 200,000 | 200,000 | A deliberately smaller square than the default; suitable for testing generation and administration workflows |
| Default configuration | 1,024,000 | 1,024,000 | The documented default horizontal dimensions |
| Large custom world | Above 1,024,000 | Above 1,024,000 | A larger coordinate space; the exact value is an administrative choice and must be evaluated on your host |
| Rectangular world | Your chosen X value | Your chosen Z value | Useful when width and length requirements differ; set each axis independently |
No validated universal formula establishes how much RAM, disk space or processing time a particular map size requires. Those requirements depend on the server version, generated terrain, explored area, installed content and host hardware. Treat the examples as dimensions only, not performance promises.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCreate and launch the new save safely
- Give the new save a unique directory or name. Do not reuse the old directory during the first test.
- Apply the settings through the panel, file or creation-stage commands before the first generation of that save.
- Start the server and watch the console for configuration, generation or JSON errors.
- Wait for the normal ready state before connecting a player.
- Join with an administrator account and move through the world long enough to confirm that terrain generates normally.
- Check the generated world’s configuration or administrative information for the selected dimensions, then test map or world boundaries in a controlled way.
- Only after verification should you make the new save the primary server world.
Testing movement or boundaries confirms that the intended world is running; it does not substitute for a benchmark. Do not infer a specific performance result from the map size alone.

How to verify that the setting was applied
Check the file or panel values
Reopen the configuration used for the new save and confirm that the X and Z values match the numbers you entered. If the panel displays labels rather than key names, verify that its width field maps to X and its length field maps to Z.
Check the active save path
A common source of confusion is starting the server with the old save after editing a new configuration. Compare the startup path, panel world selector or save name with the directory you intended to generate. If the old buildings and terrain appear immediately, stop and verify the path before changing anything else.
Check the server log for errors
A malformed JSON edit can prevent startup or cause the host to ignore the change. Restore the backed-up configuration, correct the punctuation, then reapply only the three map-size keys. Keep a copy of the error message when asking a host administrator for help.
Troubleshooting common failures
The command is rejected or has no effect
Confirm that you are in the world-creation stage, have administrator permission and used the exact camelCase names. worldwidth, world_Length and bracketed placeholders are not substitutes for worldWidth and worldLength. If the save already exists, generate a new save rather than repeating the command on the old one.
The edited values revert after restart
You may have edited a template, a copy of the file or a configuration that belongs to a different instance. Stop the server, identify the file used by the active startup profile and inspect it after saving. Managed panels can also overwrite manual edits when a configuration form is submitted; use the panel’s own fields if that is how the host manages the file.
Best Value
The server still opens the old world
Changing dimensions does not automatically change the save selected at startup. Confirm the world name and save path, stop the server, and select the new directory explicitly. Keep the old directory available until the new one has been checked.
Startup fails after editing JSON
Restore the known-good backup, then make a smaller edit. Check for missing commas, extra commas, accidentally deleted braces or quoted values where the server expects numbers. Do not replace the entire file with the three-key example; merge the values into the existing configuration.
The new world performs poorly
Map dimensions alone cannot identify the cause or predict a remedy. Record the server version, active mods, host hardware, generated area and observed symptoms. Reduce the test dimensions in a separate save, monitor the host’s actual resource use and compare measured results. There is no source-supported universal disk-space or RAM multiplier for a chosen map size.
The host offers no map-size controls
Ask whether the host permits access to the world-creation fields, the server configuration file or the console. Provide the exact keys—MapSizeX and MapSizeZ—and explain that they must be set before the new save is generated. If the host cannot expose those controls, you may need a different deployment with file or console access.
Preserving the original world
There is no need to delete the existing save when creating a different-sized world. Archive it with its configuration and version information, and document which save is active. Keeping both worlds lets you return to the established map if the new dimensions are unsuitable. It also gives you a clean reference when diagnosing whether a problem comes from generation settings or from unrelated server changes.
If players must move to the new world, communicate that it is a separate save. Buildings, explored terrain and inventories do not become part of the new world merely because both saves are on the same server. Plan any migration or recreation separately from the map-size change.
Administrator checklist
- Stop the server completely.
- Back up the current save and configuration.
- Choose width and length as integer block counts.
- Set
MapSizeXandMapSizeZ, or run the case-sensitiveworldWidthandworldLengthcommands during creation. - Apply the settings before the new save exists.
- Use a new save path or world name for the first launch.
- Start the server and inspect generation and configuration output.
- Verify the active path, dimensions and boundaries with an administrator account.
- Measure resource use on the target host instead of relying on a universal estimate.
- Keep the original save until the new world is accepted.
The essential rule is the lifecycle: configure the dimensions first, then generate the save. For an existing world, preserve it and create another save with the desired width and length.
