What you need before changing a password
- An account that can sign in to the vBulletin AdminCP and has permission to manage administrator accounts.
- The correct AdminCP address. The vBulletin Manual shows the usual pattern as
https://www.example.com/forums/admincp/. The path is different if the installation renamed the AdminCP directory. - The exact administrator account you intend to change. The Administrators filter can return more than one account.
If the site owner changed $admincpdir in config.php, replace admincp in the URL with that configured directory name. Do not assume the default path is still valid.

Change another administrator’s password in AdminCP
This is the documented route for managing an administrator account other than the one you are currently using. SiteGround’s procedure, updated August 7, 2025, uses the following menu path.
- Sign in to the vBulletin AdminCP.
- Open Users > Search for Users.
- Open the Primary Usergroup drop-down menu and select Administrators.
- Click Find to run the search.
- Review the results, then click the username of the specific administrator whose password should change.
- Enter the replacement value in the Password field and save the account.
- Log out, then log in again with the new password for that administrative account. This confirms that the change was saved and that you used the intended account.
Check the result list before editing
The search is filtered to the Administrators primary usergroup, but it may still show several accounts. Change only the account that has been approved for the reset. Do not enter a new password on every result unless you deliberately intend to rotate every administrator credential. Record which account was changed so another administrator is not locked out unexpectedly.

Use a password that can be entered reliably
Store the new credential in the site’s approved password manager and avoid sending it through ordinary chat or email. When testing, type or paste it carefully and confirm that no extra spaces were added.
Change your own vBulletin password from the public site
The vBulletin Manual documents a separate self-service workflow. It changes the password of the account that is already signed in; it is not the AdminCP administrator-management procedure.

- Open your public-site profile while signed in.
- Choose Edit Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Enter the current password.
- Enter the new password twice, in the two new-password fields.
- Save the settings, sign out, and sign back in with the new password.
Use this route when you know your current password and are changing only your own account. Use AdminCP when you are authorized to manage another administrator.
Choose the correct workflow

If the AdminCP login page does not open
Verify whether the directory was renamed
Try the AdminCP directory configured by the site rather than repeatedly adding /admincp/ to the forum URL. The Manual specifically notes that changing $admincpdir in config.php changes the login path.

Confirm that your account is authorized
Being a forum moderator or a regular user does not necessarily grant permission to edit administrator accounts. Ask the site owner to confirm the account’s AdminCP permissions.
Do not assume a database edit is universal
The available vBulletin guidance does not establish a version-independent database-edit procedure or a universal lockout-recovery sequence. Database changes can vary by vBulletin version, configuration, password handling, and hosting environment. Before attempting any server-side recovery, identify the exact vBulletin version and follow an authoritative procedure for that version, or have the site owner or hosting administrator handle it.

Verify the change without affecting other administrators
- Sign out of the account you changed.
- Sign back in using the new password.
- Open the AdminCP and confirm that the expected account, not a similarly named administrator, was tested.
- If the login fails, recheck the username, keyboard layout, capitalization, and whether the saved value included accidental spaces. Do not immediately reset additional administrator accounts.
When the login succeeds, notify the account owner through your normal secure channel and update the password record in the approved password manager.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using the public profile page to change someone else’s password
The profile workflow requires the current password and applies to the signed-in user only. Sign in to AdminCP and use the administrator search for another account.
Editing every result from the Administrators search
The filter identifies administrator accounts; it does not mean every result should receive the same password. Open and verify the intended username before saving.
Assuming the default AdminCP URL
A renamed $admincpdir makes the default URL incorrect. Obtain the configured directory name from the site’s administrator or configuration records.
Trying an undocumented recovery recipe
Methods copied from a different vBulletin release may not apply to your installation. The documented steps here assume working AdminCP access; an exact-version procedure is needed for server-side recovery.
