The dependable fix is to use a mailbox on your own domain, send through authenticated SMTP, and publish aligned SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. What Yahoo’s “bad From” rejection means
The address a recipient sees in From: is only one part of an email’s identity. A message also has an envelope sender (sometimes shown as Mailfrom or the return-path) and the server that actually transmitted it. Yahoo compares these identities with authentication results. If a WordPress site claims to send as one domain while an unrelated server or domain appears in the envelope, Yahoo can treat the message as forged, rewritten, or unauthenticated.

A rejection is especially likely when the sender’s domain publishes a DMARC policy of p=reject. Yahoo’s Sender Hub explains: “If a domain is protected by DMARC with ‘p=reject’, any message without a proper DKIM signature or SPF alignment will be rejected by Yahoo’s mail servers.” In other words, passing one isolated check is not enough; the authenticated result must align with the domain in the visible From: header.
The SMTP status may be 554 5.7.9, but that number is a policy result, not a complete diagnosis. The bounce text and raw headers identify which identity failed and whether forwarding or a rewrite changed the message.

1. Preserve the complete Yahoo bounce
Do not troubleshoot from the bounce subject alone. Yahoo’s failed-delivery notice normally includes the reason for rejection and the original message or diagnostic headers. Save the entire notice before deleting it or forwarding it as ordinary mail.
- SMTP response code: for example,
554 5.7.9. - Enhanced status code: retain the full value if Yahoo supplies one.
- Recipient address: record the Yahoo mailbox that rejected the message.
- Diagnostic text: keep every line describing DMARC, SPF, DKIM, authentication, or a suspected forged sender.
- Original message: preserve the headers and body Yahoo returned, because a plugin or host may have rewritten the sender.
Keeping the original evidence matters when more than one system sends mail for the site. A contact-form plugin, WordPress core notification, ecommerce extension, and hosting panel can each use different sender settings. The bounce tells you which message failed, rather than merely proving that one test failed.

2. Inspect Yahoo’s raw headers
Open the bounce or returned message in Yahoo Mail and choose its option for viewing the raw message or full headers. Yahoo’s header guidance recommends comparing the bottom From: address with the Received and Mailfrom information. The topmost Received or Mailfrom value identifies the actual sending address shown by the delivery chain.
- Locate the visible
From:header. Write down the full address, including its domain. - Locate
Mailfrom,Return-Path, or the envelope-sender line if Yahoo displays it. - Read the
Receivedlines from the bottom upward to identify the first server that accepted the message from WordPress or its mail host. - Compare the domains, not just the mailbox names. A message that displays
site.examplebut entered Yahoo from an unrelated domain needs correction. - Find the authentication results and note the SPF result, DKIM result and signing domain, and DMARC result or alignment statement.
A mismatch is a strong clue that the visible address was forged, rewritten, or never authenticated. For example, a contact form may put a visitor’s Gmail address in From: while the host sends through its own server. The message then appears to claim the visitor’s domain without authorization. The safe design is to keep the site’s domain in From: and put the visitor’s address in Reply-To:, if the form supports it.
3. Change WordPress to a domain-owned From address
Use a mailbox on the same domain that the site controls, such as [email protected] or [email protected]. WordPress support guidance recommends a sender address on the site’s own domain instead of a Gmail or Yahoo address when the site sends mail.

Set the site-wide address
- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
- Open Settings > General.
- Review the administration email address and the site identity fields. Choose a domain-owned mailbox for automated notifications where your setup exposes a sender field.
- Save the change and clear any cache that stores mail settings.
The exact sender field may instead be controlled by an SMTP, contact-form, membership, or ecommerce plugin. Check each extension that sends mail; a plugin-level setting can override the site-wide value. Search its mail or notification settings for From, sender, return-path, and reply-to fields.
Keep replies separate from the sender identity
The From: address should remain a mailbox your domain authorizes. If a form needs replies to go to the person who submitted it, place that person’s address in Reply-To rather than replacing From:. Make sure the domain-owned mailbox exists if staff or customers are expected to reply. A nonexistent sender mailbox can create a second operational problem even after Yahoo accepts the message.
4. Route WordPress mail through authenticated SMTP
Many hosts do not provide a reliable, correctly identified mail-transfer agent for PHP or WordPress. WordPress documentation notes that a site without a properly configured SMTP server may need to use a remote SMTP server. SMTP authentication gives the receiving system a consistent sending service and prevents the host from silently substituting a different sender.
- Choose an SMTP service or a hosting mail server that permits your domain-owned sender address.
- Obtain the service’s SMTP hostname, port, encryption requirement, username, password, and permitted sender identity.
- Install or enable your WordPress SMTP mailer, then open its connection settings.
- Enter the provider’s authenticated credentials and select the encryption method and port specified by that provider.
- Set the default
From:address to the same domain-owned mailbox used in WordPress and enable any “force sender” option only when it matches your approved identity. - Save the settings and send a test message to a Yahoo mailbox.
Do not use a provider account to impersonate an address that provider has not authorized. Some services rewrite the envelope sender or add a provider subdomain; that is acceptable only when their SPF and DKIM instructions are followed and the resulting authentication aligns with the domain in the visible From: header.
When SMTP credentials work but mail still bounces
- Sender mismatch: the plugin may authenticate as one domain while forcing a different
From:address. - Multiple mailers: another plugin or the host’s PHP mail path may still send some notifications outside the SMTP route.
- Unapproved mailbox: the SMTP service may accept credentials but reject or rewrite a sender that has not been verified.
- Missing DNS records: authenticated transport alone does not create SPF, DKIM, or DMARC alignment.
5. Publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for the From domain
WordPress Developer Documentation calls setting up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC “a critical step to ensure deliverability.” These controls complement one another:

- SPF authorizes the servers allowed to send mail for your domain. Include every legitimate service that sends WordPress mail.
- DKIM adds a cryptographic signature to the message. Your SMTP provider supplies the selector and DNS record needed for that signature.
- DMARC tells receiving systems what to do when SPF or DKIM fail and requires alignment with the domain shown in
From:for a pass.
Publish the records at the correct DNS host
- List every service that sends as your domain: WordPress SMTP, hosting notifications, forms, marketing systems, support tools, and any other approved sender.
- Ask each service for its current SPF inclusion instructions and DKIM record. Copy the values exactly into the DNS manager authoritative for your domain.
- Create or update the domain’s DMARC TXT record for the same organizational domain used in
From:. Choose a policy appropriate for your rollout; a strictp=rejectpolicy can cause Yahoo to reject messages that lack proper DKIM or SPF alignment. - Wait for DNS changes to propagate according to your DNS provider’s normal timing, then retest.
Do not publish an SPF record that omits a legitimate sending service, and do not create conflicting records for the same domain. If several systems send mail, consolidate their authorized services according to the providers’ instructions. DKIM must be enabled by the service that transmits the message; adding a DNS record without enabling signing does not create a signature.
6. Understand the Yahoo 554 5.7.9 result
Yahoo documents 554 5.7.9 as a policy rejection that can be related to missing DMARC, particularly after forwarding. The status does not mean every message with that number has the same cause, so use the accompanying diagnostic text and headers.
When DMARC is set to reject
If your domain publishes p=reject, Yahoo expects a message claiming that domain to have either a valid DKIM signature aligned with the visible From: domain or an SPF pass aligned with it. A message can pass SPF for an infrastructure domain and still fail DMARC if the domains do not align. Likewise, a DKIM signature from an unrelated provider domain may not satisfy alignment.
When forwarding is involved
Forwarding commonly breaks SPF alignment because the forwarding server, rather than your original SMTP service, connects to Yahoo. Test direct delivery from WordPress to Yahoo separately from forwarded delivery. If direct mail passes but forwarded mail fails, the forwarding path is the variable to investigate; do not “fix” that result by putting a third-party or recipient address in From:.
7. Retest and verify the delivered headers
A successful SMTP submission is not proof that Yahoo accepted and authenticated the message. Verify the final message in a Yahoo mailbox.

- Send a new WordPress test message after DNS and SMTP changes have taken effect.
- Open the message in Yahoo and view the raw headers.
- Confirm that the visible
From:domain is your site’s domain and that the envelope sender is consistent with it. - Record the SPF result and the domain it evaluated.
- Record the DKIM result and signing domain.
- Confirm that DMARC passes alignment for the visible
From:domain. - Repeat with the actual contact form, notification, or ecommerce event that originally failed; those plugins may use separate sender settings.
If the direct test succeeds, compare its raw headers with the original bounce line by line. Differences in the first sending server, envelope sender, DKIM signing domain, or From: address usually identify the component that still bypasses your intended configuration.
8. Troubleshooting branches when the bounce continues
The visible From address is still a personal mailbox
Inspect the plugin that generated the message, not only WordPress General Settings. Replace the personal address with the domain-owned sender and put the personal address in Reply-To when needed.
The envelope sender belongs to the host
Your SMTP plugin may not be forcing the provider’s approved sender, or another mail path may be active. Check the plugin’s “force From” or sender-identity setting, then confirm the first Received and Mailfrom lines in a fresh test.
SPF passes but DMARC fails
Compare the SPF-authenticated domain with the domain in From:. A pass for a different domain is not aligned. Correct the provider’s return-path or sender-domain configuration, or use DKIM signing aligned to the visible From domain.
DKIM is listed in DNS but the result is “none” or “fail”
Check that the provider’s selector and public key were copied exactly and that the SMTP service is signing the message. A DNS key alone does not sign mail. Use the selector shown in the raw DKIM result when comparing the message with your DNS record.
Only forwarded messages fail
Send directly to Yahoo and record the authentication results, then send through the forwarding path. If only the forwarded copy fails, forwarding is changing the path or breaking SPF alignment. Keep the original domain-owned From identity and investigate the forwarding service’s handling of DKIM and DMARC.
Some WordPress mail works and some does not
Map each notification to the plugin or service that sends it. A site can have one correctly configured SMTP path for administrator alerts while a form or store extension still uses the host’s PHP mailer. Configure every sender or disable duplicate mail routes, then retest each message type.
9. Choosing the right SMTP approach
The fix is a configuration and authentication problem, not a physical hardware purchase. Whether you use a host-provided mailbox, a remote transactional SMTP service, or another hosted mailer, evaluate it against the same operational requirements.

Choose the simplest service that gives you control of the From identity, authenticated SMTP, complete DNS guidance, and useful logs. Before changing providers, inventory every system that sends from the domain so you do not remove an SPF authorization or DKIM configuration still needed by another workflow.
10. A final preflight checklist
- The original Yahoo bounce, SMTP code, enhanced status, recipient, and diagnostic text are saved.
- The raw headers show a domain-owned visible
From:address. - The envelope sender or
Mailfromis consistent with the sending domain. - WordPress sends through an authenticated SMTP server rather than an unreliable default mail path.
- The SMTP provider permits the selected sender identity.
- SPF authorizes every legitimate service that sends for the domain.
- DKIM is enabled by the transmitting service and its DNS record is published correctly.
- DMARC is published for the From domain, with a policy you understand.
- A direct WordPress-to-Yahoo test has been delivered and its raw headers reviewed.
- The exact plugin or workflow that originally failed has been tested, including any forwarding route.
Once those checks agree, a Yahoo rejection for a bad From header normally has a clear resolution: the message claims the same domain that the SMTP route and authentication records can prove it is authorized to use.
