How to Change the Title Font Size in Matplotlib

Use fontsize in ax.set_title() or plt.title() to resize one Matplotlib title; use axes.titlesize for a broader default and figure.titlesize for suptitles.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a single plot’s Axes title, pass a numeric fontsize to ax.set_title(): ax.set_title("My title", fontsize=18). Use plt.title() for the current Axes, or change axes.titlesize when you want a default for multiple Axes titles.

Change the size of one Axes title

Use fontsize as a keyword argument when setting the title:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot(x, y)
ax.set_title("My title", fontsize=18)

The value is a font size in points; replace 18 with a suitable numeric size for your chart. Matplotlib’s Axes.set_title API accepts text properties as keyword arguments and returns the title’s Text instance.

If you are using pyplot’s current-Axes interface, the equivalent call is:

Set the default size for Axes titles

To apply a default to Axes titles more broadly, set the axes.titlesize rcParam before creating or updating the titles:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

plt.rcParams["axes.titlesize"] = 18

axes.titlesize controls Axes-title text specifically; it is separate from general text size and axis-label size. For a reusable project style, add axes.titlesize : 18 to a Matplotlib style sheet and apply it with matplotlib.style.use, or configure it in a matplotlibrc file. In Matplotlib’s documented configuration precedence, runtime rcParams override style sheets, and style sheets override matplotlibrc settings. See the customization documentation.

Change a figure-level title instead

A figure-level title created with fig.suptitle() is distinct from an individual Axes title. Set its size with the call’s fontsize argument:

fig.suptitle("My figure", fontsize=20)

For a default figure-title size, use figure.titlesize, not axes.titlesize. The figure API documentation describes figure-level title settings.

Adjust title placement separately

Font size and title position are independent. By default, Matplotlib determines an Axes title’s vertical position to avoid top-side Axes decorations. If a larger title crowds nearby content, make more room in the figure layout or adjust placement with y or axes.titley; pad changes the offset in points.

ax.set_title("My title", fontsize=18, pad=12)

The loc argument controls horizontal alignment—"left", "center", or "right"—without changing the font size. Matplotlib’s title-positioning example illustrates alignment and automatic placement.
