To change a document’s theme in Word for Windows desktop, open Design > Themes, preview a theme, then select it. A document theme changes coordinated colors, fonts, and effects—not Word’s own interface appearance. If you mean dark mode for the app, use the separate Microsoft 365 theme setting.
How do I change the theme for a Word document?
These steps apply to Word for Windows desktop. Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 and Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 for its training instructions, and notes that the Mac and web versions may differ. See Microsoft’s Word design and editing guidance.

A theme coordinates document colors, fonts, and effects, so applying one can change more than the page’s color. Microsoft explains document themes and theme controls here.

How do I save, reuse, or make a theme the default?
Save a custom theme in Windows desktop Word
- Apply the theme and customizations you want to keep.
- Select Design > Themes > Save Current Theme.
- Enter a name and save. Word stores the theme as a
.thmxfile, which appears under custom themes for reuse.
Use it in another document on Mac
Microsoft’s help for Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Word 2024 for Mac, and Word 2021 for Mac directs users to Design > Themes to apply a theme and customize options on the Design tab. To save one, choose Themes > Save Current Theme; it can then be selected from the Custom section in another document. See Microsoft’s Word for Mac theme instructions.
Make a theme the default for new documents
In the documented Windows desktop workflow, apply or save the theme, then select Design > Set as Default. This makes it the default for new Word documents in that workflow; do not assume the same control is available in every platform or version. To return to Word’s standard document theme, open Design > Themes and choose Office.

Do you mean Word’s dark mode rather than a document theme?
Word’s application theme changes the appearance of the interface; it is separate from the theme applied to a document. Microsoft 365’s app-theme choices include White, Dark Gray, Black, Colorful, and Use system setting. In Black theme, Word may recolor document pages by default. See Microsoft’s guidance on changing the look and feel of Microsoft 365. App-theme availability and behavior can depend on the version and platform.
How can I change only one heading or paragraph?
A document theme is intended to coordinate the overall design. For a change limited to selected text, use local formatting or apply a Word style instead. Styles format text and structures such as headings; themes offer a faster way to change the document’s overall colors and fonts. Microsoft explains the distinction in its comparison of templates, themes, and Word styles.
