Structured data can help Google interpret those visible facts, but it cannot replace them, prove a ranking is correct, or guarantee that search results or AI assistants will feature the page.
How do you make a tier list people can trust?
Start with the list itself and make its context immediately clear. A reader should be able to tell what is ranked, what the tiers mean, how placements were decided, what evidence supports them, and when the page was last reviewed. On a multi-game site, answer those questions separately for each game and ranking view; a shared template is useful, but one game’s rules or criteria should not silently carry over to another.

Define the scope of every ranking
Identify the game and, where relevant, the mode, region, ruleset, and version or date represented. These details determine what the ranking can reasonably claim. A list for one mode or ruleset should not appear universal if its evidence covers only that context. Put scope close to the ranking, rather than expecting readers to infer it from a page title or a site-wide disclaimer.

Define each tier and explain how an item earns its placement. Describe the criteria used, how competing factors are weighed, and whether placements come from measured results, editorial judgment, or a combination. When judgment is part of the process, say so plainly and identify the evidence editors considered. A reader should be able to understand the reasoning without mistaking a subjective conclusion for a measured fact.

Make evidence inspectable
Link to source data where possible and identify what the data represents. Label categories, units, scope, and timestamps; explain missing values and known limitations. Google recommends considering whether content offers original information and completeness, and whether it provides sourcing and trust signals such as author or site background. Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content is a useful reference for that broader editorial standard.
Show who owns the page and when it was reviewed
Give readers a visible author or editor, the page’s purpose, an update date, and an About or contact route where appropriate. A date answers when someone reviewed the page; it does not establish that the ranking is accurate. Trust comes from the combination of a clear method, evidence, and accountable ownership—not a recent timestamp alone.
Rank #2
What should a tier list methodology page include?
A methodology page can explain site-wide practices, but each game page still needs its own scope and any game-specific definitions or criteria. A practical methodology page should cover:
- Ranking scope: which games and ranking views the method applies to, plus relevant modes, regions, rulesets, versions, or dates.
- Tier definitions: what each tier means and how readers should interpret differences between them.
- Placement criteria: the factors considered and how they affect a placement.
- Evidence: whether the ranking uses measured data, editorial judgment, or both; link to source material where available.
- Limitations: missing data, known gaps, and conditions under which a placement may not apply.
- Accountability: the responsible author or editor, review date, and a route for questions or corrections.
- Change history: a useful record of substantive revisions, especially when a game version, data source, or method changes.
Keep essential explanations visible in ordinary page text. Tables and interactive controls can make a list easier to use, but its meaning should not depend solely on an opaque graphic or an interaction that prevents readers from understanding the ranking.
Rank #3
How should a multi-game tier-list site organize its pages?
Use a consistent page pattern so readers know where to find the list, methodology, sources, definitions, and update history. Keep the actual context game-specific: a shared layout does not justify shared assumptions. Lead with a concise explanation and the current ranking, then make supporting details easy to reach without hiding context that changes how the list should be interpreted.
For each ranking view, label the data with its scope and timestamp, and provide definitions and evidence alongside it or through clearly labeled links. If different views use different criteria—for example, because they represent different modes or rulesets—state that distinction where the reader encounters the view. The page should remain understandable when its visible table or list is read apart from surrounding promotional or navigational elements.
How do AI assistants understand data on a webpage?
Assistants and search systems can use page text and other signals to infer what a page is about, but there is no basis here for claiming that every AI assistant interprets a tier list in the same way. Google’s documentation concerns Google Search. For Google’s systems, clear headings, explicit labels, and ordinary visible text help make the page’s meaning and context legible; structured data can provide additional machine-readable clues, not a substitute for those explanations.
Present the ranking in a form people can read and that systems can extract, with clear labels for items, tiers, scope, and update information. Do not make critical definitions available only in an image or encode a meaning in the markup that the visible page does not support. Keep any structured representation synchronized with the list and its metadata as the page changes.

Does schema markup help AI understand your website?
Structured data is a standardized way to provide search engines with explicit clues about page meaning. Google’s guidance says it may enable richer appearances in search, but valid markup does not guarantee display. It also must accurately represent visible page content; misleading, hidden, or unrepresentative markup can fail policy or eligibility checks. See Google’s introduction to structured data and its structured data policies.
There is no tier-list-specific rich-result type established by the cited Google guidance. For an editorial explainer about a ranking, Article markup may describe facts such as headline, author, and publication or modification dates, but that does not turn the ranking itself into a dedicated rich result. Google’s Article structured data guidance describes that supported use. If you add markup, Google’s documentation recommends JSON-LD when practical; validate it and monitor it after release using its Rich Results Test and Search Console.
Case studies are not forecasts. Google reports a 25% higher click-through rate for Rotten Tomatoes results enhanced with structured data. It also reports that Food Network converted 80% of its pages to enable search features and saw a 35% increase in visits. The cited page does not state the examples’ years, and these figures concern those individual publishers; they do not establish a general expected lift or prove that markup alone caused the Food Network increase. Google’s structured data introduction presents the case studies.

When a version, ruleset, source, or editorial method changes, check whether the ranking and its accompanying explanations still describe the same scope. Update visible dates when a review occurs, and revise structured data so it continues to match what readers see. A review date records a review; evidence and an understandable method are still needed to support the placements.
Before publishing or revising a ranking, check that:
Quick Recap
- The game and the relevant mode, region, ruleset, or version are clear.
- Tier meanings and placement criteria are defined for that ranking.
- Measured evidence is distinguishable from editorial judgment, and sources are linked where possible.
- Missing values and known limitations are explained rather than silently obscured.
- Readers can identify the author or editor, page purpose, and review date.
- Important context is available as readable page content, not only as an image or opaque visual.
- Any structured data matches visible facts and is checked after release.
