On a RimWorld Together server, each player can normally choose a storyteller from Options > Gameplay > Storyteller Settings > Modify. If you run the server and want one storyteller for everybody, use the in-game admin panel’s Difficulty Manager and set enforcement to Yes, or set EnforceStoryteller to true in the server’s storyteller configuration and restart the server.

Which storyteller setting do you need?
There are two different outcomes. Decide which one you want before changing anything:

Storyteller enforcement is generally disabled on RimWorld Together servers, so the first option is the normal starting state. If a player cannot change the storyteller, an administrator has probably enabled enforcement or the server’s initial setup has applied a shared setting.
Change your own storyteller as a player
This changes your storyteller only when the server permits per-player choices. You do not need file access or administrator privileges.
- Join the RimWorld Together server.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Choose Options.
- Open the Gameplay tab.
- Find Storyteller Settings and click Modify.
- Select the storyteller you want, then confirm the change using the controls shown by your current game version.
If the Modify control is unavailable, the server may be enforcing a single storyteller. Ask an administrator to set Difficulty Manager to No. A menu label can move between releases, so look for the storyteller settings inside Gameplay if the wording is slightly different.

A storyteller controls the incident pacing and other narrative rules associated with that storyteller. This menu does not, by itself, apply a new custom difficulty. Difficulty presets and individual difficulty sliders are a separate choice in the same general Gameplay area.
Let players choose their own storyteller from the admin panel
An administrator can explicitly allow per-player storyteller choices without editing a configuration file.

- Join the server with administrator privileges.
- Click the admin icon in the top-right corner of the game interface.
- Open Difficulty Manager.
- Set the enforcement choice to No.
- Have each player follow Options > Gameplay > Storyteller Settings > Modify.
This is the appropriate setting when the group wants different players to use different storytellers. It does not select a single storyteller for the whole server.
Enforce one storyteller for every player
Use enforcement for a server-wide scenario in which the administrator, rather than individual players, controls the storyteller. There are two ways to enable it.
Method 1: Use Difficulty Manager (recommended)
- Join the server as an administrator.
- Open the admin menu with the icon in the top-right corner.
- Choose the storyteller the server should use.
- Open Difficulty Manager.
- Set the storyteller enforcement option to Yes.
- Have players reconnect or reopen the relevant settings if their existing session still displays the previous choice.
The RimWorld Together community guidance recommends making these changes through the in-game admin panel rather than hand-editing files. It reduces the chance of editing the wrong file or using a property name that your release does not recognize.
Method 2: Edit the storyteller configuration file
Use the file method when the admin panel is unavailable or when you manage the server through a hosting control panel. Make a backup of the file before changing it.
- Stop the server. Do not edit a live configuration while the server is writing settings.
- Open your hosting panel’s Files tab.
- Go to the
/Configs/directory. - Open the storyteller configuration file. Guides use both
StorytellerConfig.jsonandStoryTellerConfig.json; use the file that actually exists in your server’s Configs folder. - Find the
EnforceStorytellerproperty. - Set it to
trueto enforce the storyteller defined in the configuration, orfalseto let players select their own. - Save the file.
- Restart the server before testing the result.
A valid setting uses a Boolean value, not a quoted word:

"EnforceStoryteller": trueDo not replace true or false with "true" or "false" unless the file already uses a format explicitly documented by your server version. Keep the rest of the JSON intact; a missing comma or brace can prevent the server from loading the configuration.

If the property or filename does not match
File naming is not consistent across published guides. Check the actual /Configs/ directory rather than creating a second file with a guessed name. One guide also spells the property as EnforeStoryteller; that spelling is not the documented EnforceStoryteller setting. Do not add the misspelled property unless the live server’s own configuration clearly uses it and its version documentation confirms the behavior.
Verify that the change worked
Test from a normal player account after the server has restarted.
- Per-player mode: the player can open Options > Gameplay > Storyteller Settings > Modify and select a storyteller.
- Enforced mode: the selected storyteller remains fixed, and players cannot replace it with a personal choice.
- File changes: the result does not appear until the server has been restarted, and an incorrectly named file may have no effect.
- Admin changes: confirm that Difficulty Manager still shows the intended Yes or No state after reconnecting.
If the old storyteller remains active, stop the server again, confirm that you edited the file in the active server instance, check the spelling and capitalization of the property, and restart. If the admin panel and file disagree, use the admin panel as the authoritative control and check the saved configuration afterward.
Storyteller versus difficulty: do not change the wrong setting
RimWorld Together exposes storyteller and difficulty as related but independent settings. The storyteller determines the narrative storyteller selection; difficulty determines the challenge rules and sliders.

Change difficulty in the game
- Open Options.
- Go to Gameplay.
- Open Storyteller Settings and click Modify.
- Choose a difficulty preset, or choose a custom difficulty to expose individual sliders.
Changing a difficulty preset does not necessarily change the storyteller. Likewise, selecting a different storyteller does not automatically copy a custom difficulty profile.
Difficulty configuration file
Difficulty values are stored separately in DifficultyConfig.json. The file corresponds to the custom difficulty options presented by the vanilla in-game menu. Do not edit DifficultyConfig.json when your goal is only to change the storyteller.
Why difficulty can behave differently between servers
Published setup guidance is not completely consistent about whether difficulty is per-player or shared. The server’s initial configuration, including the first player’s setup, may determine which scope applies. After the first player joins, check whether a difficulty change is visible to everyone before planning a server-wide ruleset. This uncertainty concerns difficulty scope; it does not change the storyteller procedure described above.

The Modify button is missing or does nothing
Check whether an administrator has set Difficulty Manager to Yes. Enforcement intentionally prevents individual storyteller changes. Ask an admin to switch it to No, then reconnect and try the Gameplay path again.

Make sure you changed the setting while logged in as an administrator, selected a storyteller before enabling enforcement, and allowed the server to save. Rejoin and inspect Difficulty Manager again. If the setting resets, stop the server and inspect the active storyteller configuration file.
The configuration edit has no effect
- Confirm the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Verify that the file is inside the active server’s
/Configs/folder. - Check whether the panel uses
StorytellerConfig.jsonorStoryTellerConfig.json. - Use the exact property name
EnforceStorytellerand a Boolean value. - Check JSON punctuation and restore the backup if the server reports a configuration error.
Players still see different storytellers
That indicates enforcement is off, the wrong server instance was edited, or the change was not loaded because the server was not restarted. Verify the admin panel’s Difficulty Manager state first, then verify the configuration file and restart.
The storyteller changed but the game feels different than expected
Review the difficulty separately. A storyteller selection and a custom difficulty profile are independent, so the server may still be using the previous difficulty settings.
Which method should an administrator use?

For a normal server, use the admin panel. Use direct editing only when you can identify the active configuration file and can safely stop and restart the server.

The menu labels cited in hosting guides are not guaranteed to be identical in every RimWorld Together release. The community wiki page used for server configuration was reported as updated roughly 388 days before October 14, 2026, so a newer release may move a control or rename a label. The underlying choices remain recognizable: player storyteller selection in Gameplay, an administrator Difficulty Manager control, and an enforcement Boolean in the storyteller configuration.
Hosting panels can also display files with different capitalization or place the active configuration under a server-specific directory. Always confirm the live path shown by your panel. If a provider’s guide conflicts with the file or controls visible on your server, follow the live server’s labels and preserve a backup before editing.
