Stop the Enshrouded server, edit the name value in enshrouded_server.json, save valid JSON, and start the server again. On a hosted server, check the control panel first: its Server Name setting may override the file.

What controls the name players see?
The dedicated server name shown in Enshrouded’s server browser comes from the name property in enshrouded_server.json. The file is in the server’s root directory when you manage the server yourself. Hosted providers usually expose the same file through a file manager or configuration editor, but some panels provide a separate Server Name field that takes priority.

Before you edit
- Make sure you have permission to stop and start the dedicated server and to edit its configuration.
- Identify whether the server is self-hosted or controlled through a provider panel.
- Record the current name, or make a copy of the JSON file, so you can restore it if needed.
- Prepare the exact display name you want. Server names are visible to all players, so use a non-offensive name.
How to change the name in enshrouded_server.json
1. Stop the server completely
Use the server application’s normal stop action or the hosting panel’s Stop control. Do not edit the file while the process is still running. Enshrouded writes its settings when it shuts down, so a change made during operation can be overwritten when the server later stops.
2. Open the configuration file
On a server you manage directly, open the server root folder and locate enshrouded_server.json. On a hosted server, open the provider’s file manager or configuration editor and browse to the server root. If the panel offers a dedicated configuration editor, use it only after confirming that it is editing this server’s actual configuration.

3. Change only the name property
Find the existing name entry and replace only its value. For example, a valid JSON object containing the setting looks like this:

Use ordinary JSON rules:
- Keep the property name in double quotation marks:
"name". - Keep the new value in double quotation marks.
- Escape any quotation mark that must appear inside the name, or choose a name that does not require escaping.
- Leave the comma after the property if another property follows it; remove or add commas only as required by valid JSON structure.
- Do not add comments, trailing commas, or smart quotation marks.
4. Save and check the JSON
Save the file in the same location and with the same filename. If your editor has JSON validation, run it before restarting. A host guide reports that invalid syntax can cause the game to silently overwrite the file with defaults; that behavior comes from a single third-party report rather than a broadly documented guarantee, so treat valid syntax as essential.
5. Start the server again
Use the normal Start or Restart action. The new name should appear in the server browser after the server has come back online. Allow a minute or two for the browser listing to update before diagnosing a failed change.

Hosted panels can override the file
If the JSON value does not take effect on a hosted server, inspect the provider’s panel before editing the file repeatedly. Some hosts expose a Server Name control under Startup Parameters. GhostCap’s hosting documentation states that its panel value overrides anything in enshrouded_server.json.
When such a field exists, set the desired name there, save the panel settings, and perform a full restart. If the panel has both a Server Name field and a file editor, treat the panel field as the authoritative value unless the provider explicitly says otherwise.

Self-hosted versus hosted workflow

Troubleshooting a name that does not change
The old name is still displayed
- Confirm that the edited file is the one belonging to the server you started.
- Confirm that the server was stopped before the edit and fully restarted afterward.
- Check that the new value is under the exact
nameproperty, not a similarly named field. - Wait one or two minutes for the server browser to refresh.
- On a hosted server, inspect the panel’s Server Name setting; it may be overriding the file.
The name reverts after a restart
The most likely explanation is that the file was edited while the server was running. The server can write its current settings during shutdown and replace the unsaved edit. Stop it first, make the change, save, and then start it again. If the value still reverts, look for a panel-level Server Name setting or an automated configuration template managed by the host.
The file is reset or the setting disappears
Reopen the file and check its punctuation, quotation marks, and commas. Invalid JSON is reported by one hosting guide to be silently replaced with defaults, although that specific behavior is not confirmed by an official statement. Restore a known-good copy if you made one, then change only the name value and validate the syntax before starting the server.
The server will not start after editing
Stop any partially started process, restore the last known-good configuration, and compare the edited line with the original. Remove comments, trailing commas, or unescaped quotation marks. Once the server starts normally, repeat the change with a minimal edit to the existing value.
Choosing a safe server name
Because the name is presented in the public server list, choose wording that identifies the world without exposing information you do not want public. Keep the value as a single JSON string and avoid characters that would require complicated escaping unless they are important to the name. The configuration setting changes the listing name; it does not rename the world save, change its password, or alter gameplay settings.

A third-party hosting guide claims that Enshrouded’s April 21, 2026 “Forging the Path” Update 8 did not change the configuration schema, but that claim has not been independently verified here. If a future game update changes the dedicated-server configuration format, check the current official support documentation and your host’s release notes before applying an older procedure.
