To change a BeamMP server’s public name, stop the server, open ServerConfig.toml, edit the Name value in the [General] section, save the file, and start the server again. The new name appears in the public server list after the server reconnects.

How to change BeamMP server name
BeamMP reads the server’s display name from ServerConfig.toml. The relevant setting is the Name key inside the [General] section. A minimal entry looks like this:

In every case, stop the server before changing the configuration. Editing a live file can leave the running process using the old value, and some hosts may rewrite the file when the service stops or starts.

Before editing ServerConfig.toml
Stop the BeamMP server cleanly
Use the Stop control in your hosting panel or stop the server process through the method you normally use. Wait until the process is fully offline before opening the configuration. A panel may show a stopping state for a short time; do not edit until it reports that the service has stopped.
Confirm that you have the active configuration
BeamMP installations can contain more than one configuration file, especially after a migration, test installation, or backup restore. Confirm that the file you are opening belongs to the instance whose public name you want to change. If your host displays an instance or server identifier, check it before making the edit.

Make a quick backup
Copy ServerConfig.toml to a backup location before changing it. A backup gives you a fast way to restore the previous name if the file is accidentally altered or a formatting mistake prevents the server from loading its configuration.
Use a plain-text editor
ServerConfig.toml is a text file. Use your panel’s built-in editor or a plain-text editor rather than a word processor. Preserve the file’s TOML structure, including section headers, quotation marks, and equals signs.
Change the name directly in ServerConfig.toml
- Stop the server. Do this before opening the file for editing.
- Open
ServerConfig.toml. Locate the configuration file for the active BeamMP instance. - Find the
[General]section. Look for the line beginning withName. - Replace only the value. For example, change
Name = "Test Server"toName = "Friday Night Cruising". Keep the key spelled exactly asName. - Save the file. Make sure the editor confirms that the file was written to the same location you opened.
- Start the server. Launch the BeamMP server using your normal panel or service command.
- Check the public list. Once the server is back online, look for the new name in BeamMP’s server browser.
The name change does not require a client-side reinstall. It is a server configuration change, so players see it when the server advertises itself again after startup.

BeamMP ServerConfig.toml name syntax
Keep the documented key and section
The setting belongs under [General] and uses a capital N in Name. TOML keys are not interchangeable simply because they sound similar. A line such as serverName = "Friday Night Cruising" is not the documented BeamMP setting and should not be used for this change.

Keep the value in quotes
Use the same quoted-string style shown in the official example. Ordinary spaces and punctuation inside the quotation marks are part of the displayed name. Do not remove the equals sign or the quotation marks while editing.
Do not alter unrelated settings
Change only the Name value unless you have another planned configuration change. Leaving unrelated lines untouched makes it easier to identify the cause if the server fails to start or the name remains unchanged.
Change the name on a panel-hosted server
Many game-server panels provide a form instead of requiring you to edit TOML manually. The labels vary slightly by host, but the documented route is usually:
- Stop the BeamMP server from the panel’s main control page.
- Open Configuration Files.
- Find
ServerConfig.toml. - Click the panel’s Config Editor icon.
- Edit the Server Name field.
- Click Save.
- Start the server and wait for it to come online.
The panel should write the value to the same Name setting used by the file. If the panel offers both a Config Editor and a Startup tab, inspect both before restarting. Some panels expose a separate Server Name startup variable, and a value there may be applied when the server launches.

When the panel field and file disagree
If the Config Editor shows your new name but the server starts with the old one, check the Startup tab for a Server Name variable. Update that variable to the intended name or clear it if the panel documentation says the file should be authoritative. Then save the panel configuration, restart the server, and check the listing again.
How the new name reaches the public server list
BeamMP reads the configuration during server startup. The public listing updates only after the process is running and has announced itself online again. A saved file alone does not change the name of an already-running process.
Allow the server to finish its normal startup before judging the result. Checking the list immediately after clicking Start can show the previous listing while the service is still coming online. The relevant test is the name displayed after the server has reconnected.

Check for an environment-variable override
A search summary reports that BeamMP Server v3.2.0 and later can accept a BEAMMP_NAME environment variable that takes priority over the file’s Name value. That behavior was not confirmed against an official BeamMP page in the available documentation, so treat it as a deployment-specific check rather than a universal rule.

Confirm that the edit was saved to the right path
It is easy to edit a downloaded copy, a backup, or a different server directory. Close and reopen the file through the same panel or directory used to start the server. If the new value disappears before startup, you did not save the active file or another process replaced it.
Check for more than one running process
If an old BeamMP process is still running while you start a second one, the public list may continue to show the first process. Stop the instance completely before starting it again, and use your host’s process or console view to confirm that the previous process has exited.
Restore the backup after a failed start
If the server stops starting immediately after the edit, restore the backup of ServerConfig.toml. Once the original file loads successfully, repeat the change carefully and alter only the text assigned to Name. This separates a naming problem from a broader configuration problem.
Formatting, colors, and name limits
The official server-maintenance documentation includes a Name customization area covering colors and similar formatting. The exact formatting syntax is not established here, so do not assume that markup from another game, panel, or generic TOML guide will work in BeamMP. Use the syntax shown in the current BeamMP maintenance documentation for any color or styling feature.
A third-party guide claims a maximum of 250 characters, but that limit is not confirmed in the official documentation available for this procedure. Do not design your server workflow around that number. If a long name is rejected or truncated, shorten it and consult the documentation or your host’s validation message.
Change BeamNG multiplayer server name safely
For a one-time rename
Use the direct file method: stop, edit the single Name line, save, start, and verify the public listing. This is the shortest path when you control the server files directly.
For a panel-managed installation
Use the Config Editor so the panel knows about the change. Check the Startup tab as part of the same maintenance window, because a panel-level variable can reapply a different name during launch.

Treat the file as one possible input rather than assuming it is the final authority. Check the service definition, panel startup variables, and environment for a name override. The value that is applied at launch is the one that will be advertised.
Recommended rename checklist
- Identify the exact BeamMP instance you intend to rename.
- Stop the server and wait until it is fully offline.
- Back up
ServerConfig.toml. - Open the active file and locate
[General]. - Edit the quoted value on the
Nameline only. - Save the file and confirm the saved contents.
- Check the panel Startup tab for a conflicting Server Name variable.
- Check for a host-defined
BEAMMP_NAMEoverride when the deployment supports environment variables. - Start the server and wait for it to report online.
- Verify the new name in the public server list.
What not to do
- Do not edit the file while the server is still running and expect the current process to reload it automatically.
- Do not use
serverNamein place of BeamMP’s documentedNamekey. - Do not overwrite the entire configuration with a generic template from another host.
- Do not treat an unconfirmed character limit as an official BeamMP restriction.
- Do not add color or formatting syntax unless it matches the current BeamMP maintenance documentation.
When the rename is complete
The change is complete when the server has restarted successfully and the public BeamMP listing shows the intended name. If the listing still shows an earlier value, work through the active-file, panel-variable, environment-variable, and duplicate-process checks before making additional edits.
