To change the built-in screen resolution on a MacBook Air, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, then select a resolution. For most people, Default is the best starting point: macOS automatically chooses the display’s recommended setting. Choose a different option if you want larger-looking content or more room for windows and apps.

The options shown can vary with the MacBook Air model, macOS version, and display. Changing the resolution does not change the built-in panel’s physical pixel count; it changes how macOS presents content on it.

Magnify all or part of the screen |
Open System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. |
Use Zoom when you want magnification rather than a different workspace layout. |
Apple recommends starting with the default resolution. A scaled setting may affect performance, so if the Mac feels less responsive after a change, return to Default. See Apple’s options for increasing the size of what appears on a Mac screen for more ways to improve readability.

Connect the monitor, then open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and select the external display rather than the built-in screen. Choose a resolution; Show all resolutions may reveal additional modes. The available choices depend on the Mac, monitor, cable or adapter, refresh rate, and other connected displays. A display’s native resolution can look sharper than a scaled mode.
Resolution settings are separate from connecting a monitor: a cable or adapter is not needed to change the MacBook Air’s built-in display. If an external screen is dark or stuck at a low resolution, consult Apple’s troubleshooting steps for an external display and its instructions for connecting displays to a Mac. The number of external displays supported also varies by MacBook Air model; Apple lists model-specific limits in its MacBook Air display-connection guide.
Recover if the screen goes black
If a resolution choice makes the screen temporarily go black, wait 15 seconds for the Mac to reset the setting. If it does not recover, press Esc to revert. If the screen remains unusable, start the Mac in safe mode, choose Default in Displays, then restart normally. Apple documents these recovery steps in its resolution guide.
