To swap the primary mouse button in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and choose Left or Right from the Primary mouse button dropdown. Microsoft’s Windows mouse settings instructions place this control on the main Mouse page in Settings, not inside the older Mouse Properties window, so the setting is found there even if you were looking for it in Mouse Properties.
Change the primary button in Settings
- Select Start, then select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then select Mouse.
- Find Primary mouse button.
- Use the drop-down menu next to Primary mouse button and select Left or Right, whichever should act as the primary button.
Microsoft’s support page for changing mouse settings uses this exact wording for the dropdown, and it offers only the two values, Left and Right. The change is a built-in Windows setting, so no additional software is required. The source does not state a version-specific or hardware-specific limitation for this control.

If you are already in Mouse Properties
Mouse Properties is still reachable from the Mouse page. Select Additional mouse settings under the related settings section of Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. That opens the Mouse Properties window, which Microsoft’s instructions use for other options such as double-click speed and pointer behavior. Microsoft’s instructions route the primary-button choice through the Settings page rather than through Mouse Properties, so use the four steps above if you want the documented path.
If you prefer the older dialog, the Buttons tab in Mouse Properties on Windows 11 includes a “Switch primary and secondary buttons” checkbox. Ticking it has the same effect as choosing the opposite value in Settings; if the two disagree, the Settings page reflects the current state.

Settings that are easy to confuse with the primary button
Several nearby controls change how the mouse feels without changing which button is primary. Keep them separate when you troubleshoot:
- Double-click speed controls how quickly two clicks register as a double-click. It is set through Additional mouse settings, not the primary button dropdown.
- Pointer speed and pointer behavior affect how far the cursor moves. Microsoft directs these to Mouse Properties.
- Wheel scrolling and pointer appearance are separate options and do not change which button clicks.
- ClickLock is a Mouse Properties option for dragging without holding the button down; it is not the same as swapping buttons.
If the change does not seem to work
- Confirm the dropdown shows the value you selected. Reopen Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse to check.
- Check that you are changing the mouse you actually use. If several pointing devices are connected, make sure the correct device is in use.
- Test the change in a plain window, such as File Explorer, rather than in an app that handles clicks itself, because some applications capture mouse input.
Microsoft’s instructions cover the Windows 11 and Windows 10 mouse settings pages. Exact menu labels can change with Windows updates, so if a label differs on your system, look for the same control under the Mouse page.
