You usually can’t change a phone number by swapping the SIM card. Your carrier assigns the number to your mobile line; to get a different number, request a change through that carrier’s account, app, store, or support channel. Activating or transferring a SIM or eSIM is a separate process. The examples below are from U.S. carriers, and menus, fees, eligibility, and timing vary by carrier and account.
How to request a new number for your existing line
- Sign in to the account that serves the line. Make sure you select the correct mobile line. The person making the request may need the right account role; Verizon, for example, says an account owner or account manager can change a line’s number.
- Open the carrier’s number-change workflow. AT&T’s published online steps are to sign in, open the line’s device options, choose “Change phone number,” search available numbers, select one, and follow the prompts. Its instructions say Wireless Account Lock must be turned off before submitting a request. AT&T: Change Your Wireless Number
- Review the fee and terms before confirming. AT&T’s article, last updated February 21, 2026, says a change is free within 30 days of activation and lists a $36 fee after that. This is AT&T-specific and may change; check the current support page and your account terms before submitting.
- Follow the carrier’s instructions for when the change takes effect. Verizon’s app workflow lets a customer select a date and submit the request. On that date, Verizon instructs the customer to power the device off and on, then wait about two minutes for it to update. That timing is Verizon’s guidance, not a rule for every carrier. - Prepare for voicemail and account changes. AT&T says voicemail changes with the number and messages cannot be transferred. Save any important messages beforehand. After the change, set up a new greeting and update the number associated with your AT&T ID if needed.
What to do if you can’t find the option or service doesn’t update
Use your carrier’s current support channel rather than trying a SIM swap as a workaround. Account permissions, account locks, pending account activity, or plan-specific rules can affect whether you can submit a request. If you have submitted it but service has not updated, follow the carrier’s timing and troubleshooting instructions for your line.

Changing a number, porting a number, and activating a SIM are different

Carrier-specific steps are not universal: confirm the current workflow, permissions, fees, and effective timing with the provider serving your line.
