Change an Abiotic Factor dedicated-server password by stopping the server, editing its password setting, saving the change, and starting the server again. On a rented server, the setting is in the provider’s control panel. On a self-hosted Windows server, add or replace -ServerPassword=yourpassword in the launch command.
Changing the password does not automatically change administrator access. Keep the join password separate from -AdminPassword, and give players the new password only after the server has restarted successfully.

What changes when you edit the password
The server password controls whether a player can join the protected server. It is separate from the server name, port numbers, and administrator credentials. A password change normally takes effect only after the server process is restarted, so editing a panel field or command line while the process is running is not enough.
Use this order for every installation:
- Tell connected players that the server will restart.
- Stop the dedicated server completely; wait until the panel or console reports that it is offline.
- Edit the password setting in the host panel or launch command.
- Save the setting and check that the new value was retained.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Test a connection with the new password before distributing it.
Do not put a password in a public post, server name, screenshot, or command shared with people who should not have access. Anyone who can read a startup command or hosting-panel account may be able to see the value.

Changing the password on a rented server
Control-panel labels vary by provider, but the operation is the same: stop the instance first, locate the password field, save it, and restart. The following documented panel paths identify where the setting is located for several common providers.

Generic control-panel procedure
- Sign in to the account that owns the server and open the server instance, not the billing or account settings page.
- Choose Stop or Power off. If the panel offers both a graceful stop and a forced kill, use the graceful option first and wait for the process to exit.
- Open the provider’s game-settings, startup, server-settings, or command-line page listed above.
- Find the field named Server Password, or the predefined command line that contains a password value. Do not edit the administrator-password field unless you intend to change administrator credentials too.
- Replace the old value completely. Avoid leading or trailing spaces; a space accidentally copied into the field can make an otherwise correct password fail.
- Click Save, Apply, or the panel’s equivalent. Navigate away and return once to confirm that the value persisted.
- Start the server. A panel may show “starting” for several minutes while the game process, Steam query service, and world finish loading.
- Join from a client that is not already authenticated, or deliberately enter the new password again, to verify the change.
If the panel does not show a password field
Some hosts expose only a startup command or a predefined command-line profile. Use the provider’s command-line editor and look for -ServerPassword=. If neither a field nor that parameter is present, do not guess at a configuration filename. Ask the host which setting controls the game server’s startup arguments; the available panel layout can change without changing the game itself.
Changing the password on a self-hosted server
For a self-hosted installation, the password is supplied as a launch parameter. Add -ServerPassword=yourpassword to the command that starts the dedicated server, then restart the process.

Keep your existing performance, player-limit, port, and server-name arguments unless you have a separate reason to change them. The portion relevant to the join password is:
-ServerPassword=YourServerPasswordStep-by-step command-line edit
- Locate the shortcut, batch file, PowerShell script, service definition, or scheduled task that launches
AbioticFactorServer-Win64-Shipping.exe. Edit the actual launch source; changing a shortcut will have no effect if a different script starts the server. - Stop the running server and wait for the process to exit. Do not edit and relaunch over an existing instance.
- Find an existing
-ServerPassword=...argument. Replace only the value after the equals sign. If no such argument exists, add-ServerPassword=NewPasswordalongside the other server arguments. - Keep the argument as one command-line token. Do not insert spaces around the equals sign.
- If the password contains characters that your shell treats specially, follow that shell’s quoting rules and test the result. A simple alphanumeric password avoids interpretation problems, but it should still be long and unique.
- Save the file or shortcut, then start the server using the same mechanism you normally use.
- Watch the console or log for a normal startup and test the server from a client with the new password.
Understanding the other arguments in the example

Join password and administrator password are different
-ServerPassword is for players joining the server. -AdminPassword is optional and is intended for administrator access. Keeping the two values different limits the damage if the join password is shared with the player group.
One hosting guide recommends keeping the administrator password separate. That same guidance says that, without -AdminPassword, administrators can instead be added by SteamID in Admin.ini. This is single-source guidance rather than an official developer specification, so confirm the method against the version and host setup you operate before removing an administrator password.

- Never send the administrator password in the same message as the ordinary join password.
- Rotate the administrator credential independently if it has been exposed.
- Changing
-ServerPassworddoes not revoke an administrator account configured through SteamID.
What players do after the change
Players can search for the value supplied to -SteamServerName in the server browser, or connect by the server’s IP address and port when that method is supported by their setup. When a password is configured, they enter the new value at the join prompt. A player who was connected before the restart may need to leave and reconnect so the client performs authentication again.

Send players the exact capitalization and punctuation. Password comparisons can fail because of an extra space, a copied line break, or a different uppercase letter. If the server is not visible, test reachability and browser listing separately from password authentication; changing the password does not repair a blocked port or an incorrect server address.
Blank passwords and public servers
Do not assume that an empty field has the same meaning on every host. Kinetic Hosting explicitly documents a blank Server Password field as disabling the password. Another guide describes players needing a password to join, creating a conflict in general instructions. The behavior can depend on the host panel, launch profile, or server version.

If you want a public server, verify the result with a test account after restarting. If you want a private server, enter a deliberate password rather than relying on an empty value. A successful panel save is not proof that the running process received the intended setting.

When a password command is suggested in chat or a blog
A Skynet Hosting blog lists an in-game password newpassword console command. It is not confirmed by official documentation in the available sources. Treat it as unverified: do not rely on it for a production server, and use the hosting-panel setting or -ServerPassword launch parameter instead.

Security practices for a shared server
- Use a password that is not the same as your Steam, hosting, email, or administrator password.
- Share it through a private channel limited to current players.
- Change it when a player group changes, when the value appears in a screenshot, or when it is posted publicly.
- Store the value in a password manager rather than in an unprotected public script repository.
- Restrict access to the hosting panel and the machine or account that can edit the launch command.
- Keep a known-good copy of the previous command line before making an edit, but remove exposed passwords from backups that are not access-controlled.
Platform and documentation caveats
A community GitHub wiki states that the dedicated server is currently Windows-only and appears under Tools in the Steam library. Platform support can change, so verify the current distribution and operating-system requirements before setting up a new instance. The Windows executable and command shown above should not be treated as proof that another platform is supported or unsupported.
The available instructions come from third-party hosting guides and a community wiki rather than official Deep Field Games or Steam documentation. Panel labels, launch syntax, and platform availability are volatile; re-check the provider’s current interface and the game’s current server files before making a change. The documented instructions should be re-verified by approximately January 12, 2027.
Quick verification checklist
