How to Change the Display Type on a Roku Streaming Player

Use Settings > Display type on a Roku streaming player to choose an available resolution and frame rate. Learn what to do if the picture does not return.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Roku streaming player, press Home, then go to Settings > Display type. Choose an available resolution and frame-rate option, press OK, and confirm only after the picture returns. This menu path is for separate Roku streaming players; Roku TV menus can differ, so check the guide for your TV model.

Change the display type

  1. Press Home on your Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings, then select Display type.
  3. Choose one of the available display types and press OK.
  4. If the picture returns, select Yes, I can see it and press OK. A checkmark appears next to the active setting.

The screen may go black for a few seconds as the player changes settings. Roku documents these steps for streaming players; if you have a Roku TV, use the television’s model-specific guide instead. See Roku’s instructions for changing the display type.

What “display type” means

Display type combines the picture resolution and frame rate. During setup, the player analyzes its HDMI connection to identify what the connected TV supports. Roku says the automatic setting is appropriate for most situations. If the player has not detected the TV’s capabilities correctly, choose an available option manually.

If the screen stays black

If the selected resolution or frame rate is unsupported, Roku says the player returns to its previous setting after 20 seconds. Wait for the picture to return before trying another option. If the TV should support the setting you want, check the HDMI connections and, for 4K or HDR, the requirements across the full connection chain.

  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Check the 4K or HDR connection

  • Make sure the Roku and HDMI cables are firmly connected, and use a TV input that supports HDCP 2.2. Roku identifies HDCP 2.2 support across the connection chain as important for 4K/HDR playback.
  • Roku recommends Premium High Speed HDMI cables for each link in the chain. A different cable may help if the existing connection does not support the desired signal, but changing a cable is not required just to open the Display type menu and does not guarantee a fix.
  • If an audio-video receiver (AVR) is between the Roku and TV, connect the player directly to a suitable TV input as a diagnostic test. If that restores the picture or 4K/HDR, the receiver or another link in the chain may be limiting the connection.
  • Some TVs require HDR to be enabled for the specific HDMI input in use. Check the TV’s settings or manual for that input option.

For more detail, see Roku’s guidance on HDCP 2.2 and 4K/HDR and its streaming-player setup instructions.
