Stop the server cleanly, set the Difficulty selector in Commands.dat to Easy, Normal, or Hard, then edit the configuration file that belongs to that difficulty. Save the files and restart the server. On current installations that normally means Config.txt; installations created before version 3.25.8.0 may still use a legacy Config.json layout.

What changing difficulty actually does
Unturned exposes three documented server presets: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Normal is the default. The preset determines which gameplay-configuration values the server reads when it starts; it is not merely a label shown to players. A server can therefore appear to accept a change while continuing to use the previous rules if the selector and the edited configuration section do not match.

Most server options cannot be configured while the process is open, and Unturned has no built-in autosave. Treat the operation as a controlled restart: save the world, shut down the process, make the file changes, and launch it again. Editing a file while the server is running can leave the live process unchanged and can also put recent progress at risk.
- Easy: the easy preset and its associated gameplay settings.
- Normal: the default preset and its associated gameplay settings.
- Hard: the hard preset and its associated gameplay settings.
The names above are the documented presets. The exact effects of individual gameplay options depend on the values in the active configuration file and any level-specific overrides, so do not assume that changing the label alone changes every rule you want.

Find the correct server folder and file layout
For a simple dedicated-server installation, begin in U3DS/Servers/Default/. If you created another server ID, replace Default with that ID. The relevant files are normally below:
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Smartly Dressed Games’ current documentation places most server options in a text file such as Servers/Default/Config.txt. Older installations have a different arrangement, and that distinction explains many “the setting did nothing” reports.

On a current installation, look for Config.txt in the server directory. Depending on the build and how the server was created, you may also see a generated difficulty-specific text file, such as Config_NormalDifficulty.txt. Use the file that the startup process identifies as active for the selected preset rather than editing an unrelated copy.
If several configuration files are present, note their timestamps and paths before editing. The name alone is not proof that a file is active: a generated file may be the one read at launch, while an older template remains in the same directory. Startup output is the final authority when the layout is unclear.
Legacy JSON configuration
Servers created before version 3.25.8.0 may contain Config.json. That legacy file keeps separate Easy, Normal, and Hard sections in one JSON document. During startup, the server can convert this legacy layout into per-difficulty text files; an example generated name is Config_NormalDifficulty.txt.
With the JSON layout, changing a value under an inactive section has no effect on the current run. For example, editing the Hard object while the server is still set to Normal will not make a Normal server behave as Hard. Either edit the section that matches the selected preset or let the server perform its conversion and then edit the generated active text file.

Change the difficulty manually
Use this procedure when you have access to the server files and console. Make a backup before changing anything, especially if you are changing a long-running world.
1. Save and stop the server safely
- Open the dedicated-server console or the console supplied by your host.
- Run
Saveso the current world state is written. - Run
Shutdownand wait for the process to close. The documented shutdown command saves and closes the server safely.
Do not kill the process, close the terminal, or reboot the machine while the server is still writing data. Because there is no built-in autosave, a forced stop can discard recent progress.

2. Back up the configuration
Copy Commands.dat and the active configuration file to a separate backup location. If the server uses legacy JSON, copy Config.json before allowing a conversion. A backup gives you a quick rollback if the new preset loads unexpected values or if a syntax error prevents startup.
Include the server ID and date in the backup name. If you operate several instances, this avoids restoring the configuration from one server into another. Keep the backup until players have connected and the new settings have been verified.

3. Set the selector in Commands.dat
Open Commands.dat in the server’s folder and locate the difficulty setting. The documented selector is Difficulty, with Easy, Normal, and Hard as the supported preset names. Builds that use the standard key-value command format will look like this:
Difficulty EasyReplace Easy with Normal or Hard as needed. Older tutorials and server builds do not all describe the parser in the same way, so use the syntax documented for the exact build you run. Do not add several competing difficulty lines; leave one unambiguous selector and verify the chosen value in the startup output.
If there is no difficulty line, add the selector in the same plain-text format used by the other commands in that file. Preserve the file’s existing line endings and do not wrap the command in JSON punctuation; Commands.dat is not the legacy JSON configuration file.
4. Edit the matching gameplay configuration
Now open the configuration that corresponds to the selector.

- Current installation: edit the active

Easy,Normal, orHardsection inConfig.json. Editing a different section will not alter the selected mode.
Change only the settings you intend to change. Keep the existing key names, capitalization, separators, and value types. If the file is JSON, every property except the last one in an object needs a comma; a missing comma can stop the legacy file from loading. If the server has already converted the JSON file, do not continue editing an obsolete section while the server is reading the generated text file.
When comparing two presets, copy only the keys you deliberately want to differ. Replacing an entire section can overwrite unrelated gameplay values. A small, documented change is easier to test and to reverse than a wholesale paste from another server.

5. Save, start, and verify
- Save
Commands.datand the matching configuration file. - Start the server normally.
- Watch the startup output for the selected difficulty and the configuration file that was loaded.
- If you need detailed confirmation of gameplay overrides, launch with the documented
-LogGameplayConfigoption and inspect the printed values.
Only treat the change as complete after the startup log confirms both sides of the change: the selected preset and the configuration source that belongs to it.
Changing difficulty through a hosting control panel
A managed Unturned host usually presents the same operation through a web interface: stop the instance, open a configuration or startup-settings page, choose Easy, Normal, or Hard, save, and restart. The labels and menu paths vary by provider, so the panel’s documentation takes precedence over a generic tutorial.

Before relying on a panel, confirm that it permits a clean shutdown, shows which file it edits, keeps a restorable backup, and exposes startup logs. A panel that changes a hidden template without updating the active server file can produce the same mismatch as a manual edit. If you use a hosting recommendation or tracked link, verify the provider’s current geography, commission, availability, and affiliate terms separately rather than assuming they apply everywhere.
Why the new difficulty did not apply
Work through these causes in order. Each one produces a different corrective action.
The server was still running
Most options are read at startup. Stop the server with Save followed by Shutdown, make the edit, and restart it. A browser refresh or an in-game reconnect does not reload server configuration.
The wrong configuration section was edited
In legacy Config.json, all three presets are stored together. Compare the selector in Commands.dat with the section you changed. If the selector says Normal, values under Easy or Hard are inactive until you select that preset.
A current server is still being edited as if it used JSON
Newer installations generally read Config.txt. A guide written for the pre-3.25.8.0 JSON layout may send you to a file that the server no longer uses. Check the server directory and startup output, then edit the active text file.

A level override is replacing your value
Unturned can apply level-specific configuration overrides. An empty value can be filled by a level, while a value explicitly assigned in Config.txt takes priority. If you need to disable level overrides globally, the documented launch option is:

The legacy JSON will not load
Inspect the file for malformed punctuation, especially a missing comma between properties. Restore the backup if necessary, correct the JSON structure, and start again. Do not mix JSON syntax into a text configuration file or paste a text-file line into a JSON object without adapting its punctuation and value format.
The selector syntax does not match the server build
Different generations of tutorials show different command conventions. If the log does not acknowledge the difficulty setting, consult the documentation for the installed build and use its exact Difficulty syntax. The current documentation should take precedence over an older wiki example.
You changed one server but started another
Multiple instances can live below U3DS/Servers/. Confirm the server ID in the control panel or startup command, then edit the Commands.dat and configuration files in that instance’s folder. A correct change in Servers/Default/ will not affect a separate folder such as Servers/ExampleServer/.

Use a short verification routine after every difficulty change:
- Read the server ID and path from the launch command or panel.
- Confirm that the selected value in
Commands.datis exactly Easy, Normal, or Hard. - Confirm that the edited file belongs to that selected preset.
- Start with
-LogGameplayConfigwhen the effective values are unclear. - Check the startup log for warnings about an unreadable JSON file, an unknown command, or a different configuration path.
- Join only after the process finishes loading; reconnecting to a still-running process cannot prove that a file edit was read.
Keep the pre-change copy until you have verified the server in normal play. If startup fails, stop the process, restore the backed-up files, and launch again before diagnosing individual gameplay keys.
Rollback and repeatable administration
To return to the previous difficulty, stop the server safely, restore the original selector and matching configuration values, and restart. If you saved a complete backup of both files, restoration is safer than manually undoing many edits. For a server with several administrators, record the selected preset, the active file path, and the date of the change in your maintenance notes so another operator does not edit an inactive section.
When testing a new preset, change one group of gameplay values at a time. That makes it possible to tell whether an unexpected result came from the preset, a level override, or a syntax error. Keep the startup log from the successful launch alongside the backup; it provides a reference for which file the server actually loaded.
