How to Change the Default Search URL Slug in WordPress

WordPress’s pretty search URLs use the /search/ base by default. Change it through a plugin setting or custom rewrite behavior, then test the updated paths.

WordPress uses search as the default base for pretty search URLs, such as example.com/search/term. You can change it with a plugin that adds a search-base field under Settings → Permalinks, or customize WordPress rewrite rules in code. The query-string form ?s=term is separate and does not use that pretty URL base.

What the search URL slug controls

WordPress core sets the search base to search. For a pretty search URL, WordPress combines the site root, that base, and the search term; the core reference describes the base as “Base of the search permalink structure (example.com/$search_base/query).” See the WP_Rewrite class reference.

Changing the search base changes the readable path used for search archives—for example, from /search/coffee to /find/coffee. It does not change the search query itself. A URL such as /?s=coffee passes the term as a query-string parameter rather than using the pretty permalink structure.

Choose a method

Method Best fit Main consideration
Plugin setting Site owners who want a dashboard field Check that the plugin is maintained and compatible with your installed WordPress version.
WordPress rewrite code Developers who need control over generated rules Requires familiarity with WP_Rewrite, rewrite filters, and refreshing rewrite rules.
Server-level .htaccess rules Sites whose Apache configuration is managed by someone comfortable with server rules Rules vary by server setup and must preserve normal WordPress request handling; test on staging first.

Change the search base with a plugin

  1. Check the plugin listing for current maintenance and compatibility with your WordPress version. The Pretty Search Permalinks listing describes a custom search-base field on the Permalinks settings page. At the time of the listing information referenced here, it identified version 1.3 and compatibility through WordPress 7.1; verify the current listing before installing.
  2. Install and activate the plugin through the WordPress dashboard or the plugin’s documented installation method.
  3. Go to Settings → Permalinks and enter your preferred short base in the plugin’s search-base field.
  4. Save the settings, then use the site’s search form to confirm the resulting URL and results page work.

Use a simple path segment, such as find or lookup, rather than a full URL or a phrase containing slashes. The plugin’s field and behavior are described on its WordPress.org page.

Change rewrite behavior with code

For a custom implementation, WordPress exposes the search_rewrite_rules filter for generated search archive rules. The hook reference documents the filter and identifies search-related paths such as pagination and feeds. A code change should account for the search paths your site actually uses; modifying only one URL pattern can leave related archive URLs inconsistent.

After changing rewrite behavior, regenerate rewrite rules so WordPress applies the new patterns. The rewrite flush reference describes refreshing rules, including a one-time flush. Visiting and saving the Permalinks settings page can refresh them. Do not flush rewrite rules on every front-end request; that creates unnecessary work.

WPCode and server-level .htaccess rules are also described as possible approaches in a WPBeginner guide. Treat example snippets as starting points, not universal instructions: verify their behavior for your WordPress and server configuration, and test in staging before applying them to a live site.

Test the new search paths

After saving the change, test the site’s search form rather than checking only a manually typed URL. Confirm that the expected search results appear and that the address bar uses the new base.

  • Search for a plain word, then a phrase with spaces or punctuation.
  • Check pagination when results span multiple pages.
  • Test search feeds if your site uses them.
  • Review caching behavior and any external links that still point to the old pretty search path.

If a test fails, first confirm the configured base and that rewrite rules were refreshed. Then disable conflicting rewrite customizations one at a time, checking the site on staging where possible. Server rules should be reviewed by the person responsible for the site’s Apache configuration.

Will changing the search slug improve SEO?

A more suitable path can be a URL customization choice, but changing the label alone is not evidence that rankings will improve. Neither a ranking boost nor a traffic gain follows simply from replacing search with another word. Choose a base for clarity or consistency, and make the change only if its effect on existing links and site behavior is acceptable.
