To change where Windows 11 saves new apps and personal content, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. Choose a destination drive separately for each available category. This changes defaults for supported new content; it does not move apps or files already on your PC.
Change the default destination for new apps and files

Open Start > Settings.

Select System > Storage.

Open Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.

Use the drop-down menu beside each content type to select the drive you want. Windows lets you choose separately for new apps, documents, music, pictures, and videos.

Microsoft describes this as setting default storage locations, and notes that different drives can be selected for different content types. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows guide.

What the setting changes—and what it does not
New content covered by Windows’ options
The available choices cover new apps and common personal content: documents, music, pictures, and videos. Set only the categories you want to redirect; the selections do not have to use the same drive.
Existing apps and files stay where they are
Changing the preference does not relocate anything already installed or saved. To move existing files, select them in File Explorer and use Move to to transfer them to a connected storage device. Microsoft provides steps in its guide to freeing up drive space. Moving installed apps is a separate task, and this setting alone should not be treated as an app-migration tool.

Choose a drive that fits how you use the content

Available space: Choose a drive with room for the new content you expect to save. Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not specify a minimum capacity or speed requirement for this preference.

Internal or removable: A second internal drive can serve as a continuing destination. An external USB drive or SD card may also be useful, particularly for infrequently used files, but it must be connected to appear in the list and to access content stored on it. Microsoft discusses external storage in its free-up-space guidance.

Windows default or app-specific choice: This preference is not a promise that every third-party desktop installer, updater, or app will use the selected drive. When installing through another program, check its own installation options. Microsoft’s documentation describes the Windows default but does not establish behavior for every installer.
If the drive you want is missing
Confirm that the drive is connected to the PC. Microsoft specifically advises checking the connection when the intended drive does not appear in the available list. If it is removable, keep in mind that files placed there may be unavailable whenever the drive is disconnected. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting advice for a missing destination drive.

How this differs from OneDrive and app save dialogs
Windows’ drive preference, OneDrive synchronization, and an app’s own Save or Save As choice are related but distinct. OneDrive synchronizes files between the PC and OneDrive, and Microsoft says users can choose OneDrive or This PC when saving a file. That per-file choice does not change the Windows default destination for new content. See Microsoft’s OneDrive save-location guidance.
