The change you can most often make is in Chrome: open Chrome’s Downloads settings and choose a download location, if your phone or tablet offers one. Other apps have their own controls, or none at all.
Change the download location in Chrome
For Chrome on Android, the menu path is Chrome > ⋮ > Settings > Downloads > Download location. Choose the destination the device offers. If the phone or tablet supports removable storage, Chrome may list an SD Card option. The path is reported by a Google Chrome Help Community Product Expert in an answer dated May 20, 2024, and Chromium’s Android interface strings include the same Download location and SD Card labels. Google’s own consumer help pages describe where Chrome saves files, but they do not document this exact menu route, so treat the route as Chrome-specific and possibly different on your device or Chrome version.

Steps
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) and choose Settings.
- Tap Downloads.
- Tap Download location. If this row is missing, see the troubleshooting section below.
- Select the destination offered, such as internal storage or SD Card, and confirm if Chrome asks.
- Download a small test file, then check where it landed in Chrome’s Downloads list or the Files app.
What the setting does not change
This instruction changes where Chrome saves its downloads. It does not change where other browsers, messaging apps, or streaming apps save files. Google’s Android file-management help notes that content downloaded in various apps may need to be found inside the app that downloaded it, and that steps can vary by device.

Where to find the file after you download it
Google’s Chrome Android help says downloads are saved to Chrome’s default download location and points users to the Files app to find them. Start in Chrome’s own Downloads list, then open the Files app if you need the file on the storage itself. Folder names and layouts differ between manufacturers, so the exact path shown on your phone may not match any example you see online.

Using an SD card for downloads
Chrome’s Android interface strings contain an SD Card label and a separate option labelled “Ask where to save files.” Those strings show that these controls exist in Chrome’s Android code. They do not guarantee the same controls on every device or Chrome release, and an SD Card choice appears only where the hardware and software support removable storage.

Formatting an SD card permanently deletes its data. Google’s Android Help states: “If you format your SD card, data will be permanently deleted.” Back up anything you need before you set up or reformat a card.

- Download location is missing. Availability depends on the Chrome version, the device’s storage support, and the device maker’s build. Update Chrome if an update is available, then check the storage options in Android settings. If the option still does not appear, Chrome may not offer a location choice on that device, and you can rely on the default folder instead.
- SD Card is not offered. The phone or tablet may not support removable storage, or no card is inserted and recognised. Check that the card is seated and shows in Android’s storage settings.
- You cannot find a download. Check Chrome’s Downloads list first, then the Files app. If the file came from another app, look inside that app’s own download folder or settings.
- You want every app to save to the same place. Android does not offer one universal setting for this in Google’s consumer help. Change each app’s own download setting where it exists.

Google’s documentation establishes the SD card storage options, but it does not list which phone models support them. If you are buying a microSD card specifically to receive downloads, first confirm in your phone’s storage settings that it accepts removable storage, and check the supported format and capacity in your device’s manual.
