To change the browser Windows 11 uses for web links, open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for your preferred browser, select it, then choose Set default if that button appears. If only some links keep opening elsewhere, check the specific link-type association—or the app’s own link preferences.
Make Chrome, Firefox, or another browser the Windows default
- Install the browser you want to use, if it is not already installed.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the browser by name, then select its entry.
- Select Set default if Windows shows that option. Microsoft documents this flow for Edge; the exact wording or screen may differ with another browser or Windows build. Microsoft’s Edge instructions show its Windows 11 steps.
For example, to make Chrome the default, search for Chrome on the Default apps page, select it, and use the available default-setting control. The setting applies to the browser associations Windows assigns through this interface.

Fix links that still open in another browser
Windows lets you change defaults by file type or link type as well as by app. In Settings > Apps > Default apps, select the relevant browser and inspect the listed associations. If a link type is assigned to a different app, select that association and choose your preferred browser if Windows offers it. Microsoft’s default-apps guidance covers changing these associations.
Test by opening a web link from the app where the problem occurs. If it still goes to another browser, identify whether that app has its own link-opening preference before changing more Windows associations.

Set the browser for Outlook or Teams links
Outlook and Teams can have app-specific link behavior, so their choices may differ from the Windows default. Microsoft notes that changing an app’s link preference does not replace the Windows default setting. In Teams, open Settings > Files and links > Link open preferences and choose the browser you want Teams to use. Microsoft’s Outlook and Teams link guidance explains this distinction.
Important limitation in Windows 11 S mode
Microsoft says Edge remains the default browser in Windows 11 S mode. To make Chrome, Firefox, or another browser the default, you must switch out of S mode. Microsoft says that switch cannot be reversed, so do not treat it as a routine setting to toggle just to change browsers. See Microsoft’s Windows S mode FAQ before deciding.

If your browser does not appear
Make sure the browser is installed, then return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and search again. The documented selection flow starts by choosing an available app, so an uninstalled browser will not be available to assign.
