To change when Windows saves power automatically, set the battery percentage in Settings. In Windows 11, the control is under Energy saver; in Windows 10, it is under Battery. Choose the percentage that suits you—Microsoft does not specify one universal best threshold.
Change the threshold in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Energy saver.
- Next to Turn energy saver on when battery level is at, select the battery percentage you want.
Windows 11 calls the feature Energy saver. Its threshold setting is in the expandable Energy saver section, not on a separate Battery page. Microsoft also documents an Always use energy saver option if you want the feature enabled regardless of the threshold. To switch it on immediately, use the Energy saver control in taskbar Quick Settings. Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance covers these controls.

Change the threshold in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Battery.
- Under Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below, choose the percentage at which it should activate.
Windows 10 uses the name Battery saver, and its settings path differs from Windows 11. To turn Battery saver on until the next charge instead of relying on the automatic threshold, Microsoft documents the Battery saver status until next charge control. See Microsoft’s instructions for Battery saver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose automatic activation or turn it on yourself
| What you want | Windows 11 | Windows 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Activate automatically at a chosen battery level | Choose a level beside Turn energy saver on when battery level is at. | Choose a level under Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below. |
| Keep the feature on regardless of the threshold | Use Always use energy saver. | Use Battery saver status until next charge to keep it on until the next charge. |
| Switch it on immediately | Use the Energy saver control in taskbar Quick Settings. | Microsoft documents the until-next-charge control; the cited guidance does not specify a separate Quick Settings path. |
The available threshold is a user-selected percentage. Microsoft’s guidance does not recommend a single percentage for every device or user. A lower setting means Windows waits longer before activating automatically; a higher setting means it activates sooner.

What happens when Battery saver or Energy saver is on?
Windows temporarily turns off some power-consuming activity. Microsoft gives automatic email and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and apps you are not actively using as examples. This can reduce background activity while running on battery, so consider whether you need those functions to continue before choosing when the feature should turn on. Microsoft explains the behavior here.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Its guidance says that after this date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The Battery saver threshold remains a Settings option for people using Windows 10, but changing it does not change the operating system’s support status. For details, see Microsoft’s power mode and support information.
