Match a service to your route, the networks you use, the devices you carry and whether you need obfuscation on restrictive networks. Proton VPN and ExpressVPN publish travel-specific features that address those needs; TechRadar names NordVPN its overall pick in its 2026 travel roundup. That ranking is TechRadar’s editorial judgment, not a universal test result.
What matters in a VPN when you travel?
For a nomad, a large server list is only useful if it includes locations that fit your itinerary and your need to reach services back home. Also consider what happens when your laptop or phone moves between café Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi and mobile data. Security features, device support and performance on the local connection all matter.

- Route-relevant locations: Check the countries you need, rather than comparing server totals alone. A server count does not show whether a provider has a convenient location for your route.
- Network switching: Look for a client that reconnects reliably when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data. ExpressVPN says its Lightway protocol is optimized for mobile use and network switching; this is the provider’s claim, not an independent comparative result.
- Connection-failure protection: A kill switch can block a device’s network traffic if the VPN connection drops. Proton describes this feature on its travel and features pages.
- Device and platform fit: Confirm support for the operating systems you carry and the number of simultaneous devices allowed by the plan you intend to buy.
- Privacy evidence: Review what an audit covered and when it took place. Open-source apps let others inspect the application code, but neither an audit nor open source by itself guarantees privacy.
- Restricted networks: If you expect VPN traffic to be blocked, check for obfuscation or alternative routing. These features can help in some circumstances, but no provider can promise a connection on every network or in every country.
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider’s server, and websites see the server’s IP address instead of your device’s IP. It shifts some trust from the local network or internet provider to the VPN provider; it is one layer of protection, not anonymity software or a guarantee against every Wi-Fi threat. Keep devices updated, use multifactor authentication and secure account practices, and check local rules. The cited travel pages do not establish VPN legality for specific destinations.

Proton VPN: consider it for feature breadth and routing options
Proton’s travel page describes a kill switch, Secure Core and VPN Accelerator, while its features page lists Stealth and alternative routing. Proton says its apps are open source and that it commissions regular independent audits. Those are provider claims; check the underlying audit documentation for its date, scope and subject before drawing a conclusion about what was examined.
Proton warns that a slow or unreliable local internet connection can still noticeably slow a VPN connection. Its travel page says streaming requires a Plus account and a Plus server, so do not assume that this use is included in the free plan.
Rank #2

ExpressVPN: consider it for mobile network changes
ExpressVPN says Lightway is designed for mobile use and switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Its travel page also describes obfuscation and split tunneling. The page refers to independent audits by KPMG and PwC; consult the provider’s audit documentation for scope and date rather than treating the reference as proof that every component or claim was audited.
NordVPN: a third-party roundup’s overall pick
TechRadar’s 2026 travel roundup selects NordVPN as its overall pick and lists obfuscated servers, streaming tests and security features. These are TechRadar’s editorial findings, not results established here. Plan terms, support availability and any refund conditions can change, so verify current details before subscribing.

Choose by itinerary and use case
If you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data
Prioritize the provider’s mobile app behavior and how quickly it reconnects after a network change. ExpressVPN explicitly describes Lightway as optimized for this situation. A provider description is a useful feature signal, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service on your device or network.
If you work on public Wi-Fi
Look for a kill switch and understand what it blocks when the tunnel fails. Proton describes its kill switch as blocking device traffic if the VPN connection drops. A VPN does not replace secure account practices, operating-system updates or caution about links and attachments.
Rank #4
- 【DUAL BAND AX TRAVEL ROUTER】Products with US, UK, EU Plug; Dual band network with wireless speed 574Mbps (2.4G)+2402Mbps (5G); 2.5G Multi-gigabit WAN port and a 1G gigabit LAN port; USB 3.0 port; Wi-Fi 6 offers more than double the total Wi-Fi speed with the MT3000 VPN Router.
- 【VPN CLIENT & SERVER】OpenVPN and WireGuard are pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers (active subscription required). Simply log in to your existing VPN account with our portable wifi device, and Beryl AX automatically encrypts all network traffic within the connected network. Max. VPN speed of 150 Mbps (OpenVPN); 300 Mbps (WireGuard). *Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【OpenWrt 21.02 FIRMWARE】The Beryl AX is a portable wifi box and mini router that runs on OpenWrt 21.02 firmware. It supports more than 5,000 ready-made plug-ins for customization. Simply browse, install, and manage packages with our no-code interface within Beryl AX's Admin Panel.
- 【PROTECT YOUR NETWORK SECURITY】Our pocket wifi, unlike other vulnerable portable wifi hotspot for travel purposes supports WPA3 protocol–Preventive measures against password brute-force attacks; DNS over HTTPS & DNS over TLS–Protecting domain name system traffic and preventing data eavesdropping from malicious parties; IPv6–Built-in authentication for privacy protection, eliminating the need for network address translation.
- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
If you need to reach services from home
Check that the provider has locations suitable for the countries and services you actually need. A VPN changes the IP address websites see, but banks, work systems and other services may block VPN connections or apply their own access checks. Do not assume that choosing a home-country server guarantees access.
If you expect network restrictions
Compare obfuscation and alternative routing options. Proton describes Stealth and alternative routing; ExpressVPN describes obfuscation. Availability and effectiveness depend on the network and destination, so do not rely on a VPN as a guaranteed way around restrictions. Check local law before use.

Check privacy, plans and practical limits before paying
- Map your needs: List the countries you will visit, locations you may need to connect through, devices you carry and networks you expect to use.
- Verify the plan: Confirm device limits and whether the features you want—especially streaming access or advanced routing—are included in the specific plan. Proton’s travel page, for example, says streaming requires Plus and a Plus server.
- Read privacy evidence closely: Look for the audit date, scope and exact subject. Proton says its apps are open source and that it commissions audits; ExpressVPN refers to audits by KPMG and PwC. These provider statements should not be stretched into a claim that every product component has been independently verified.
- Check current terms: Confirm price, renewal rate, refund policy and support options directly before subscribing. Offers and plan details change, and the cited comparisons do not establish a lasting price.
- Test your real setup: Install the app on the devices you travel with and try the networks you can access before depending on it for work. Check whether the kill switch behaves as expected and whether reconnection suits your workflow.
Travel VPN guidance from Security.org’s 2026 travel comparison likewise treats stability, public Wi-Fi protection, censorship circumvention and multi-device use as relevant evaluation dimensions. They are practical selection criteria, not guarantees about a particular destination’s networks.
