Change the picture in the encoder that is already sending your livestream—without stopping its output. In OBS, prepare a replacement image or scene, then switch the visual while keeping the music source active. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Studio; stopping the encoder’s feed ends the transmission.
Change the image while the stream is live
The image is part of the program picture being sent by your encoder. Make the change in the production software, not in YouTube’s stream settings. The following is general OBS workflow guidance; exact controls can vary by software version.

- Prepare the replacement. In OBS, add the new image as an image source or place it in a scene prepared for the change. Check its crop, size, and position in the preview before switching.
- Protect the audio. Confirm that the music source remains active. The goal is to change the picture, not the audio feed.
- Change the visual. While OBS is still streaming, switch to the prepared scene or update the image source in the current scene. If that scene contains overlays or other elements, avoid hiding or removing them unintentionally.
- Verify the result. Check the OBS output and YouTube Live Control Room preview. Make sure the new image appears and the music continues before leaving the controls.
- Recover promptly if needed. If the picture goes blank or the music stops, restore the previous scene or source immediately while keeping the encoder transmitting.
Choose the safer way to replace the picture
Update the image in the current scene
This is a direct way to replace only the background while retaining other scene elements. Take care not to hide, remove, or reposition overlays and sources that should remain visible.
Switch to a prepared scene
A second scene gives you a chance to check the replacement in advance and makes it easier to switch back. Before using it, confirm that it includes the intended overlays and that the music audio source is present and active.

Do not edit stream settings to change the picture
YouTube Studio’s live settings cover items such as stream details, metadata, stream keys, and optional auto-start or auto-stop behavior. They are not the place to replace the image being produced by the encoder. Resetting a stream key is a security step for a compromised key, not a background-image change.
Keep the encoder-to-YouTube connection intact
YouTube uses the stream URL and stream key to identify where the encoder sends its feed and to accept that feed. Its encoder guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. Therefore, leave the encoder output running while you change the picture. The change is to the visual source in the program being transmitted; it is not a special YouTube feature for switching a 24/7 background.

Do not press Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Studio when continuity is the goal. YouTube’s documentation does not provide an OBS-specific sequence for changing an image, and it does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for every 24/7 setup. Check the live preview rather than assuming the change succeeded.
